Yes, I believe that violent video games effects small children. I read this story in a newspaper that a 10 year old boy had been playing a video game that included shoot people, and other violent things. This young boy took his dad's rifle and shoot his friend and himself out in the woods because he thought that it would just be like in the video game, you get another life. This is a very sad thing that happens to small children, that's why we should keep violent video games away from them until they reach a certain age. E.g 15 or 16.

Well maybe I guess I was sccared to death half the time I played the game helped me not like violence but yeah :/. I believe wrestling is worse than shooting games anyway and wrestling has a lower rating.

I think the parents should make them drop the controller, and go outside. I mean, I didn't play video games I think til I was 10. But I was still mature enough to understand it's just a game. I mean really, a 4 year old talking about killing zombies, just sounds so wrong.
the thing about this, is that they are speculating what the kids thoughts and intentions are, because you can't find out for yourself (since he killed himself). not saying that it isn't the case, but it may not be....because if it is thats a pretty stupid 10 year old TBH.
I do agree that young children should not be playing such games...go play mario party or something...but it is 100% the parents job to control the influence input into their children until a certain age. Thats why if you ask me, public school is a little iffy...you go pretty earily to PUBLIC school because you cannot control the content there, and it influences your children probably more than you (parents) at this point because they are there for more than 50% of their awake time. What if some kid is playing these games on a hand held, and letting your child play it without your knowing in the least?? What are you going to do then?

I started playing "bad" games as Grand Theft Auto II at around 6years old it affected me , but it didn't affect me very deep , nightmares , imagination etc... that's it , I didn't became violent .

Parents: VIDEO GAMES DID IT! IT WAS TOTALLY THERE FAULT! ITS NOT LIKE OUR FAILURE TO TEACH HIM VALUES AND THINGS THAT ARE RIGHT AND WRONG!

I think it depends on the game, as iSimon mentoined before. Rockstar games are generally very violent and innapropiate because, as you probably all know you can beat up people to steal their car or just punch them for fun ( or enable cheats and spam your rocketlauncher on citizens). So overall GTA games shouldn't be played by younger children, but that's why it's rated 18s.
Rockstar also made a game that's called Manhunt. It was on the news in Europe ( not sure if it was on the CNN or any other American news) and it was already banned in a certain amount of countries, such as Great Britian, and they were going to ban it in The Netherlands and Belgium.
This game is about a person that hunts gangmembers and kills them, with either firearms or he sneaks up on them and kill them in a gruesome way.
I don't think that games like Call of Duty would do children a lot of harm. Of course it's better NOT to let them play.
For example, my cousin has a son and he's about 4 years old. My cousin plays a lot of gruesome games such as the new Alien VS Predator, were you can do some deadly moves that decapitate the enemy's head or rip out someones spine. When he plays this with this son ( the son is only allowed to watch) he'll cover his eyes when these actions appear, but the son IS allowed to see the shooting.
My cousin also plays L4D2. However my cousin won't let Markus ( his son) watch it.
My conclusion is that as long as the children don't play games like the ones I've mentoined above that their development will go as is should be, but then again this is only for one child, maybe it's different with someone else.

I also think it's a health risk. When a child is under 12 or so, why is he inside spending hours a day gaming, when he really should be outside having fun with people his age

i started playing mortal kombat 2 when i was 4, i never got violent. Not all kids know that's it a video game they actually think its like real life. Like my little brother, hes playing MW2 and l4d and stuff, and he doesn't get very violent at all. but it's just the way parents raise their kids.
My brother and I have never gotten violent over a game as small children.
Also, i don't think anyone would get affected by this by the age of 10 and over.

The thing is, look at games before. I played some WWE game on nintendo 64 when I was 4, with my cousin. It was fairly violent. But look at how the games were 10 years ago. They were designed for maximum fun. There wasn't a need to question the appropriateness of it.

Wrote a paper similar to this let me go find. IN the mean time, it is on the parents to decide what is appropriate. All children do not have tendency's to run around in a car shooting at people. If they did well the world would be over.

Not gonna lie, GTA 4 was a really good game. It was rather diverse. You could do stunts, mess with cops and people, find cool stuff, or just shoot it up.
Manhunt is just gruesome and unessecarily violent torture

After reading that whole thing Black Hawk. You sir, have my utmost respect. You understand the true facts and come from the gamers point of view and defend us better than anyone could have.
Just remember this, a video game has an ESRP rating. Those ratings are there for a reason, and are placed based on maturity levels with that content, it is the PARENTS RESPONSIBILITY for the child to not play these games. Counter-Strike: Source is a rated M game. This means anyone under the age of 17 should not be playing it. We have a huge amount of members who are way under the age of 17 playing Counter-Strike: Source, why? Because their parents buy it for them. I believe it is okay for someone under 17 to play video games which are passed these ratings, only if the corresponding parents will be strict enough to teach their children tolerance and reality compared to the game.
It is the PARENTS fault if anything like this occurs, if a 15 year old plays CS:S and decides to try out a headshot on his friend believing life is in Death-Match, then the parents are to blame for buying him/her the game and not teaching the child the difference of a video game compared to reality.

I don't believe its the video games fault for some of the children who act violently but i believe it is the over use of the game that makes them violent. If you play like lets say Left for Dead 30 min a day or a hour a day you won't be as violent as someone who plays 3-6 hours a day. I believe its the parents fault for letting those children play violent video games for so long. And a 4 year old shouldn't be play Left for Dead lol. Thats just weird.

. i dont think kids younger than 11 should play rated m games. it would effenct them in school and other things .. when your in middle school and high school its actually a good thing , it relieves stress alot!!!!

And it's up to the parents to make sure their children do NOT play rated M games, unless they think it's good for the child in a weird way.
Anyway, who am I to tell parents should check on what their kids are doing? If the parents want them to play a rated M game, then let them. I'm sure that this fact isn't listed under "child abuse".
