Lately iv been playing as scout and noticed several other scouts teaming up and taking down the entire team i was starting to wonder how they did this and figured they were pros so i would like to ask for some tips on how you play a scout effectivly

I've been playing scout recently alot also, and one thing I've learned is to get up real close to most enemies and dance around them, without double jumping unless you need to, because it ruins your mobility for a crucial second where you can no longer dodge or really do much. Also don't use the FaN, use the Scattergun, pistol, and regular bat (IMO that is the best setup). Also, accuracy is key with the scattergun, at point blank you can do over 100 damage with each shot, so if you nail a heavy with three fast shots and he doesn't see you coming you can take him out before he knows what hit him. Also, pistol pistol pistol, it is a very effective weapon and a bit underrated, it can do 20 or so damage per shot at close range setting a full clip at about 240 damage if you are good enough or lucky enough to nail every shot, point is that its an excellent weapon for finishing off enemies or defending yourself if you need to reload the scattergun (long-ish reload time of it makes it a pain to do in battle unless necessary or there is a lull)

alot of scouters are purest using all original scout set up, i consider my self a pretty good scout i get out scouted every once in a while but i can also cause alot of rage on the other team personally i use fan does more damage at pointblank and in some cases even if i don't kill i can get rid of enemies plenty of times iv lunched a heavy off of Point A on blackmesa and by the time a heavy can swim and get back on top its far to late and he'll be very weak and vulnerable also the fan adds like a triple jump if you know how to use it right, personally id try out both just to see which one you like better

But just scout tips in general is use the speed to cause confusion running around them even use hit and run tactics in some cases. also use the double jump to your advantage when every possible try to attack from above in a way you can jump over them and get behind them without them seeing you attack them and disappear or try to double jump over them so they end up turning around to attack someone behind them but now ur behind them again to finish them off

I play scout a lot. My standard setup is Fan, pistol, sandman. Why???

A few strategies:

a) run away. You have the least amount of health. You are fast enough that you can run and get health and then come back to the battle
b) Know thy enemy. Did you know you can sandman a demo, run up and fan him twice, then finish with the pistol BEFORE the effects wear off? Try it. Know how much health each class has. Learn when a soldier will switch to rockets vs shotgun. Stay at an appropriate range to confuse them and use your pistol. When they reload get in close. Read read read read read about other closes. play as every class for hours until you know all of their strategies.
c) move. You are the fastest class and you have double jump. if you are moving, the enemy can't hit you.
d) switch it up. Don't always attack from the same angle. use height on maps that offer elevation. you can easily drop down and double jump just before hitting the ground to sneak up behind someone. use the fan to triple jump.
e) Take advantage of open areas. The best place for a scout to be on blackmesa is not in the vents. A is VERY scout friendly. It's big and open; you can easily get around behind enemies. Go to areas where your class will excel.

Well im quite a decent scout imo, been playing a few pugs as scout recently too (learning)

But i dont really have anything to add other than.. 3 ppl above me nailed it quite good there, what makes you differ from the crowd (and other scouts) is really your aim and movement. If you can get those 40-100 dmg shots faster than them, youre quite likely also better than they are (if you play smart to start with of course.)

Also i highly suggest Scatter gun, pistol, regular bat setup. If you get good with normal scatter gun, you got yourself much more reliable damage output compared to FaNs 2 shots n reload

1) Run all the time
2) Jump all the time
3) Shoot all the time (try to make it that all bullets hit the body [much bigger dmg])
4) Try to confuse the enemy
5) Lets rock! :D

First off, if you want to be a successful scout DO NOT USE THE FORCE OF NATURE! Yeah it is powerful, but truth be told, you only have 2 shots. If you are not right up on your target, you are not going to score a kill. Scattergun is far better. You have 6 shots, and more distance. This helps when taking down an enemy that has higher health, and you miss a couple of shots. If you search any videos from scouts in tourneys, you will see not one uses FaN. (Not that i care what videos show, but proof is in the pudding.)

Second, BONK is basically useless. Yeah it helps you pass a sentry, great, but once you are past, what next? Use the pistol. If you can not get to a ammo pack, and your scattergun is empty, you have a secondary weapon. Plus+, if you have a enemy that has done some damage to you, you can back pedal away, with the pistol, and hopefully kill the target.

Third, to be honest a bat is a bat to me, but i choose the sandman. Why? Because when all else fails, you can stun. Stun and run, when to hurt.

A few things to bear in mind:
1. Natascha hates you, and you hate it! Don't try to charge down a natasha heavy from the front. Ever!
2. Compression blast pyros are not your friend. No matter how good you are with the fan, a smart CB pyro can keep you far enough away for it to be ineffective if they know you are coming.
3. Know what to equip. If you are going to be rushing past sentries as a distraction for the rest of your team, bonk is useful. If you are going past a sentry on your own, the chances that you will make it back out alive is next to nil. I have found pistol is better in most cases because you can take out that sentry if you get lucky and it is unattended.

Don't listen to people telling you not to use FAN.

In almost EVERY CTF map, the FAN allows for better opportunities to get in and out of the enemy bases with the intel. The only CTF map this does not apply to is Turbine, because the extra mobility options are not as useful given the wide-open and highly accessible terrain.

But on pretty much any CP map, the Scattergun is just much better. Except for the last point in Steel, the FAN is a great way to kill people there.

dragz you don't even know.
scatter is better. always and forever.
don't jump around like a crazed idiot with your head cut off.
flank
get behind shoot in back
only dance around when reloading.
scout is all about aim practice is all you can do.
meat shots can 2 shot all light classes including medic and you can 3 shot any class except over healed and maybe heavy. scout is an amazing class unfortunately im teh suck at it but i really like playing scoot.

kotah, I do believe his only reason to use the FaN was for ctf maps. So if you're not planning on killing anyone, the FaN is probably better.

why would u not play on killing people.
i still say fan sucks all the time

I've seen teams that have massive KDR ratios, tons of dominations, lose CONSISTENTLY because their only mindset was to kill, not to achieve objectives.

Killing isn't everything, especially in CTF.

You can use the FAN to get from the crates to the stairless side of the battlements. Very useful!

True, but Turbine is wide-open enough so that that method of entry is unnecessary. Also, that's pretty much the only place in the map where FAN jumping is useful.

Compare to 2fort, where you can get to battlements, up from sewer to bridge, straight up on top of the bridge roof, into the grate, hide in the intel room, all with the FAN jump. Extremely useful.

I concur, except I believe it is the most about killing in CTF out of any of the other game modes (barring Arena of course). Because except for scouts and spies, most of the rest of the classes just go deathmatch mode to try and push forward and distract the enemy so the scout/spy can cap the intel. Of course there is more strategy to it than that, but you see my point. Whereas in CP/PL there are objectives that the fighting centers around consistently.

I would argue that it is MUCH more about killing in CP and Payload than in CTF.

You can literally cap the intel in CTf without firing a single shot. There's even an achievement for it.

In CP or Payload, if you're not shooting at the people at the point, you're asking to be steamrolled, not to mention those two modes are much more about multiple people physically being at a point rather than in CTF where all that matters is the intel.

I'm talking about deathmatch style play. And yes you can in CTF, but the point is 90% of the people aren't even trying to cap the intel really usually.

Well, that's just a matter of people just not trying to perform objectives, in which case...I dunno, anything.
