[Sexy Beast]

Story: It's a tale of Am?lie and her crazy introverted self.

Review: I've been putting off watching this film for quite sometime now and for some reason I decided to watch it last night. Within the first 30 seconds of the film I had fallen in love with it. Seriously, this movie is instantly likable and very enjoyable. This one has literally poll-vaulted into my list of favorite movies and trust me when I say this, you owe it to yourself to see this film.

[Sexy Beast]

Battle Royal.. the first one.. pretty decent Japanese film

Title: Battle Royale
Year: 2000
Country of Origin: Japan
Director: Kinji Fukasaku

Story: As part of a nation program to curb youth violence, one class per year is pit against each other in a Battle Royale.

Review: It's a film about not trusting adults. What's really interesting is the motivations that the director had for adapting this story to film. Apparently when he was 15, his class was recruited by the Japanese army during WWII to make munitions. In 45' the factory he was working at came under artillery attack and many of the kid he was working with were killed in the bombardment. He along with his fellow surviving class mates buried the dead. After the war he learned that the government had lied to him, he had since had a distrust for adults/those in power. The kids in this movie are roughly 15 years old.

Yes, this is a pretty good movie....a bit campy, but sill pretty good.

Year: 2009
Country of Origin: Canada
Director: Vincenzo Natali

Story: Two biochemists splice human DNA with a wide range of other creatures and created an ethical dilemma.

Review: Here is the issue with Splice, for the most part the film is an intelligent Sci-fi film dealing the ethical dilemma of genetic splicing. It's well written and well acted, the direction is a little mundane...but I can't complain. So all in all it's an intelligent Sci-fi film that actually does great job of breaking the mold of its own genre. And this hold true for most of the film, except for the final act where the film goes off the rails. So...yeah...this is a smart, goofy and campy film with a terrible ending.

I haven't seen it. My repertoire of Korean films is no where near where I want it to be.

Year: 2006
Country of Origin: South Korea
Director: Bong Joon-ho

Story: Imagine Little Miss Sunshine crossed with Godzilla and you might have an idea what The Host is like.

Review: This movie is a quirky family comedy mixed with a good ole fashion monster flick. While that might seems like a weird mixture, I have to say that the film pulls it off quite admirably. We are given a group of likable characters who we immediately side with and root for while the run from both a monster and the government. There is a little Anti-American sentiment that can be found in the film, but it's not overbearing. Definitely one of the better monster film to come out in quite some time.

Story: A man known only as Shane inadvertently stumbles into a conflict between a cattle baron and homesteaders.

Review: A great American western that deals with a somewhat reluctant hero who is drawn into a conflict to protect his somewhat adopted home and his somewhat adopted family. It's well shot, well acted and probably one of the more iconic westerns out there.

Looks like the kind of movie that only the early 90s could have produced. Kind of like this one.

Story: A young boy's family is getting evicted by some truly f'ed up people and he decided to fight back.

Review: Wikipedia lists this one as a horror film, but it's not...I guess It's more akin to a dark comedy than anything else. It not all that great of a film, I mean I enjoyed it...but it felt a little like The 'Burbs, minus Tom Hanks.

Story: Spelunking is dangerous...especially when you add in a group a cave dwelling creatures who want to kill you.

Review: The last decade was an interesting decade for the horror genre. It was a decade where American creativity all but died when it came to mainstream horror films and where Asia, Britain and France all produced amazing horror films. The Decent is an example of the type of horror film that came out of Britain, it's dark, violent, and has an feeling of desperation throughout the film. The Decent is actually one of the better horror films to come out last decade and I wholeheartedly recommend this one.

Well I have to do some of the mediocre sequels...cus I've seen them.

Story: A small red neck town is assaulted by the worms from Dune.

Review: Ridiculous but entertaining film has a small town in a dessert valley under attack from massive prehistoric worms. It's a likable film that is on the same sort of level as Arachnophobia, which came out the same year. The films has become a big cult classic and if you haven't seen it...then you should probably watch it.

I never understood this movie

It's simple a smart and likable kid from the ghetto takes on his crazy Incestuous sibling landlords...who are into BDSM and are well armed...and have a booby trapped house...and have mutants people living in their basement...and spend a the film has a Home Alone sort of vibe going on...On second thought it really doesn't make all that much sense.

I still haven't gotten around to see that yet. But here is another film from the body horror genre.

Director: David Cronenberg

Story: Jeff Goldblum turns into a mutant bug like thing.

Review: I like Jeff Goldblum, no one can play a deranged scientist quite like him, which is why his role in L&O:CI is so depressing. Anyway this is easly Cronenberg's most infamous film, it's well acted, well directed and increasing gory...like most Cronenberg films. It also has some of the most impressive make up out there, which was surprisingly not done by Rick Baker. Anyway, this is easily one of the best horror films from the 80s and probably one of the best horror films to make its way out of Canada.

Story: A hit man adopts a 12 year old Natalie Portman and then teaches her how to kill people.

Review: Weird, touching and violent film from French action director, Luc Besson. Considering the subject matter, it's surprising that film is touching when it comes to the relationship between Portman and Reno. Though at other times the relationship is creepy as hell. Portman does a great job in her role and manages not to be annoying. The other big standout is Gary Oldman, who plays the psychotic corrupt cop of a protagonist. All in all this is a great entry by Besson and probably his best film to date.
