Title: The Dead Zone
Year: 1983

Director: David Cronenberg

Plot: Christopher Walken comes out of a five year long coma with psychic abilities.

Review: The Dead Zone is a slow moving, but interesting film about a man who has to come to terms with what he has both lost and gained as a result of a debilitating accident. Walked does an amazing job here, he really manages to sell his characters emotional pain and uncertainty. Unfortunately though, the film's narrative lacks punch or I don't really know how to describe it...like it is not as engaging as it should be and film does suffer as a result. I would almost say that it is a little too dull. It's still worth watching though, but it is far from Croninberg's best.

My current self is jealous! Driving super cool vehicles into dangerous settings! I would be all over it if I could! The cars look like they are from death race!
 
If you want, I could do a review of Life is Beutiful(1997), by Roberto Benigni. Which basically is about a father and son during the Holocaust, it's a semi-comedy, where the father is trying to mentally protect his son from the terrors of the camp they are in. If you haven't seen it, it is a must see. It won best foreign film, and best foreign actor in 1997. The director was also the lead actor, which gives it that Chaplin sorta feel.

Title: Life Is Beautiful
Year: 1997
Country of Origin: Italy
Director: Roberto Benigni

Plot: A Jewish family in Nazi occupied Italy are taken to a concentration camp, where the father tries to protect his son from the horrors of the Holocaust.

Review: This film tells the powerful story of the Holocaust, with amazing cinematography, and it manages to be a semi-comedy. The story follows Guido and his son Jonathan as they are sent to a concentration camp. Guido tries to tell his son that it is his birthday surprise, and tells him that it is a competition to win a tank. One day when the kids, women, and older men are sent to the so called showers, Jonathan stays away because he doesn't want to take a shower. At the end of the film, after the war has ended and the Nazi's are trying to cover up their works, Guido tells Jonathan that they are in a rage trying to find him, and hides Jonathan in a mini shed to protect him. Guido is then taken off by a guard, and then shot. The next day after this has ended, Jonathan leaves his hiding spot as the Amercan troops enter the run down and deserted camp. And Jonathan does get the first place prize, a ride in a tank.

Overall Review: With amazing acting and beautiful cinematography, this film tells a story of sad times with a semi-comedical twist.

Title: The Brothers Bloom

Director: Rian Johnson

Plot: Two con men, the titular brothers, go after one last mark before they give up the game for good.

Review: The Brothers Bloom is a film that I would really like to like. The whole production has this charming magical realism vibe going for it, almost similar to something that Wes Anderson would put out. The acting is great; Brody, Ruffalo, and Weiss are all fantastic here. Rinko Kikuchi is also a lot of fun here as an explosives expert working for the brothers. The only issue comes with the plot, which starts out fun...but slowly becomes less so over the course of the film. Overall, the film is just a little too obvious and tries to be a little too clever and ends on a little too sour of a note. Rian Johnson is a fantastic filmmaker, but this film is easily his worst one. He's directing one of the new Star Wars films, so if you're interested in familiarizing yourself with his work, check out Brick or Looper instead.

Title: Citizen X
Year: 1995
Country of Origin: US
Director: Chris Gerolmo

Plot: A film about the investigation into the murders of Andrei Chikatilo, one of the Soviet Union's most prolific serial killers.

Review: Citizen X is an HBO film and one of their better ones. The film is low key, well acted, relatively well shot. It follows the investigation through the eyes of Viktor Burakov, a forensics expert who gets shanghaied into becoming the lead investigator. He is tasked with running an investigation that no one seems to want. There were elements in the Soviet government who refused to acknowledge that a serial killer could exist within the Soviet Union, which makes hunting for one particularly difficult. So it you're interested in a low key film about the investigation of one of the Soviet Union's most prolific serial killers, then check this one out.

Title: The Zero Theorem

Director: Terry Gilliam

Plot: An utterly insane computer genius is tasked by his shadowy employer to solve a perplexing math formula.

Review: I don't even know where to begin here, I honestly am still a bit unsure of what to make of this film. The only thing that I can really think to say is that I am not that big of a fan of the film. It's kind of bad, which is unfortunate considering it's Terry Gilliam and I am always rooting for Terry Gilliam. I think my major issue with the film is that it just doesn't add up to all that much. The plot doesn't really go anywhere and the film is chock full of half baked ideas that don't really develop into anything particularly profound. It's a little reminiscent of Darren Aronofsky's Pi from both a tonal and thematic standpoint. I guess if you really enjoy reading the tea leaves of a movie, then you might find something here, for everyone else though The Zero Theorem is a disappointment.

Review: This movie is dumb. You should probably watch it though, it's a pop culture thing.

One of so many films about the holocaust. Other than that it's indeed a good movie.
 
I finally got around to watching Daredevil and my god, am I hooked. Finished episode 2 just now and the hallway fight scene brought a huge simile to my face due to how it was it shot and how it reminded me of the overhead scene in Taxi Driver where the police arrive after Travis shoots his way into the brothel where Iris is being held.

Now you mention it, yeah it is really reminiscent of ending of Taxi Driver. Also, I really need to get around to watching Taxi Driver again.

Yeah...it's something that I kinda don't want to see, entirely because of my previous experience with the Asylum brand...which could be best described as bad...really really bad.

But, I also realize that I am doing a review thread for the entertainment of people...and reviewing something like Sharknado is what the people want because it is entertaining. So I'll get a review up in a week or two.

GTA has been taking up most of my time. I need to catch up on some movies. Also been hearing about a GTA movie in the works which is sounding interesting to say the least. How can you make coding a game interesting? Nevermind forgot about Blackhat... Ugh

I think the GTA movie is about Jack Thompson and his beef with Rockstar games. Oh man, remember Jack Thompson, good times.
 
Have you seen "The Place Beyond the Pines"?

Really odd movie that kept changing story lines.
