Wireless or wired?

I am debating to bring my computer to my bedroom I like to downstairs more but if it will increase my speed by alt i will i am wondering what you guys would do?

BTW: wireless 54mps

Wired 100mps

Just tell me what would you do and why? it would really help

Here's the skinny.

If performance was the only metric anyone used, then wired would always be the top choice. It's more reliable, it's faster, it's more awesome.

But, it's wired. It's ugly (sometimes important as some solutions need to include a high spousal/partner approval factor) and it's inconvenient.

If it's at all possible, because you're going to be moving to a different floor and several rooms away, I'd go for wired.

Wireless will typically add to your ping, which may put it outside of comfortable playing range, but it does open up mobility options. I generally see a 10-15ms ping increase on a wireless network about 30 yards from the router. If you can run wires behind the wall or such that it would look good, probably go with that. Otherwise, I would suggest wireless N.

Wireless N is the latest and greatest to the world of WIRELESS technology. Indoor signal strength is about 70 meters and up to 300mb/s of BANDWIDTH.

1 gb/s of bandwidth is becoming the WIRED standard. (Of course, this is assuming you have a card with a 10/100/1000mb/s port ON YOUR MOTHERBOARD & your router LAN port is a 10/100/1000mb/s

Now this is about bandwidth, or the amount throughput you computer can handle. This is not your download/upload strength...that is still in the hands of your ISP...devils :-D

I guess it really depends on how far your away from the router. I'm using a 54Mbps wireless D-link Router I bought for $40 and I'm not having any problems with connection or ping loss. The router is two rooms away from me and there are thick walls, but still no ping loss.

My room just looks neater and I can move my laptop anywhere. I personally think you'll be fine with a cheap wireless router. So if I were you I wouldn't think too much about it and get the 54Mbps wireless router.

If you live in a mansion or live with multiple Uncles then definitely a wireless-N.
That's just my opinion, I have zero credibility here.

DTS pretty much has it covered. If you want guaranteed reliability and speed and you don't mind the wires, then wired is your best bet.

Wireless is much easier to setup and more mobile, provided you have a decent wireless connection, you really won't notice any speed difference in games, it would only really end up causing a visibile difference in file transfers.

For wireless, you need to take into consideration distance and materials. How bad is your signal now? If you're in the basement, surrounded by metal pipes and cement walls with three floors between you and your wireless router in the attic...it's going to affect performance.

If your bedroom is right above the basement and the wireless router is somehow stuck in the floorboards, it's really not going to have any affect.

If you want to do wired, it's pretty easy to setup, but if you don't have something in place, then it can involve a decent amount of work pulling cable, drilling through 2x4's, cutting drywall and putting everything in its place (or running cable down the hallway or across the ceiling depending on how "correct" you want to be)


It would help to have a little more info about your situation and why you're considering making the move.

Wired, for your reasons exactly. It's faster. Plus, do you want to be playing and then something interferes with your signal and you get disconnected? I think not.
