I bought it, played a couple minutes and realized as much as I like the game, I need to go out and get an xbox360 controller to play it. Some people may be able to play it with mouse and keyboard, but I can't.
From the few minutes I did play it though it was extremely fun, but if you have sensitive eyes be wary of this game for now.(game also has a big seizure warning at the start). The game does come with an assortment of music(which I didnt use or even look at) but I would say you need some good paced music for this game or your ship will be too weak to last very long. Lulls in songs make you weak, and loud raucous music makes you pretty powerful and makes lots of big screen flashing.
I plan on going and getting a 360 controller in the coming weeks to give this game some more playtime, but it will have to wait a bit because I have bought several games off steam over the last couple weeks and want to play some of them as well.

The game is so much fun although a bit bright and flashy. I played a slower song with it and it wasn't impossible. Plus if there is a lull in the music they do give you a super-bomb to clear the screen. Plus the lulls provide and extra challenge of dodging baddies until the music picks up again.
Well the only negative im seeing is the controller option. I went to a local Gamestop & the guy said that the usb versions of the Xbox 360 controllers are hard to find now. Not a very pleasant thought. More developers need to institute the use of multiple controllers other than the Xbox 360 controller. Besides whats so special about it in the 1st place? Dont really understand.

IMO, I find the game very fun with or without a controller :d. I probably wouldn't even use a controller if I had one 
. Anyways, back to the topic, the gameplay depends on your music; the more intense your music becomes the better it is for you :3. The idea is sort of like audiosurf, and if you love going for the "perfect" score you should definitely buy it :d...fyi...I spent over an hour trying to get perfect*no lives lost* on hardcore >.< I raged liked crazy XD.

Playing with a mouse/keyboard is semi-hard. A 360 controller is the best way to play it.
All the bright flashes makes it incredibly hard to see the small ships ad bullets that are about to hit me during the big boss fights =\ I only tried the demo, but it was fun.

Probably one of my favorite games. I started off with using Keyboard+Mouse but like everyone else says - playing with a 360 controller is a lot easier. I personally like playing Survival mode the most. I'm trying to beat my friend's time of 1 hour and 11 minutes.

fun game i got it when it came out and it can be played well keys and mouse and i have also managed to get my logitech controller to work with a xbox gamepad emulator works flawless.
but for music games audiosurf still beats it hand down.
