Just got invited to try OnLive

So far what I have played OnLive maybe the wave of the future for gaming. You just select the game you want to play and bam it's right there waiting for you to play without installing the entire game. I played the Red Faction Guerrilla demo and was playing in seconds. The graphics are pretty good and had no lag was so ever besides the time I was recording a quick footage of me taking down a building. I'll try some other demos later tonight.

An overview of the OnLive interface.

I love how you can play crysis on a dinky computer. Its EPIC! So I signed up for their founding members program.

My thoughts
So far from what I've messed around with OnLive it's shaping up to be something great. The interface or dashboard is so easy to use anyone can use it. You have Arena which lets you watch others play live with no loading just stream their game. Then you have your Profile which needs no explaining at all. Then here comes the Marketplace where you have demos for all the current games they have. From the looks of it each game comes with a 30 minute timer. They range from casual games like World of Goo to the hardcore games like Borderlands. You have different options when it comes to buying the game a one day pass, week pass, or buy the full game. The prices are different for each game. To see what new games are comiong soon you just got to the Coming Soon page. When I check they have Kane and Lynch 2, and Metro 2033. The My Games page lets you pick between the games you have bought. The Last Game page check you right to the last game you played. The Brag Clips page lets you view your brag clips or other player clips on which you can vote on. The Friends page is just like any other Friends page.

In Summary
If you're not a PC gamer, or don't own a good enough computer to run these current games then OnLive might be the way to go. The ability to just instantly play the games without installing anything is a very cool idea. This is something that can really take off in the near future if more companies take this route. The only thing I don't like right now is that the TV plugin is not ready yet. Overall I'll give OnLive an 8/10 from what I have experience so far.

Red Faction Guerrilla
I decided to try the demo of RFG and well to my surprise it was very good looking. I had no problems what so ever on getting right into the game without any lag. I didn't really mess around in the demo since I knew what to expect since I have it for the Xbox 360. I threw some remote charges onto a building and watch it blow up into different directions each time. Like I said the game was good looking and of course I could see a difference between the Xbox 360 version and the OnLive version. I might consider picking this up so I can have my first OnLive game.

Dirt 2
Once again the graphics in this demo were very good looking. The only true problem I had with this demo was I didn't change the controls right away so I was using the arrow keys instead of W,A,S,D. Before I change it to those I could hardly drive the rally car at all. After that I had no problems controlling the car.

i signed up for the founders program as well...it seems really cool so i hope i get in!

Signed up a long time ago when OnLive was revealed. Guess they don't like me. *sniffle*

When they get the television "mini console" going, this OnLive service is really going to change the way people view console gaming.

I have always thought that OnLive was such an amazing concept that had a lot of change to bring to the industry, but that's all I thought it was going to end up being, just a concept. It's amazing to see it in action. I wish I could try it for myself.

It looks like a good way to run great games on my netbook. Except now the problem is running OnLive's requirements on it...I need to try it! You are lucky, and thanks for the info.
:O Arena interface looks amazing.

How much FPS does onlive run at? I'd hate it to run at like only 60 fps, that isn't going to cut it for competitive games.

Also, you have to pay a monthly fee, and pay per game and you never really own the games.. that makes me worried. If I pay all that money then they just go under, I have nothing to show for it.

Also.. the fact you can't do anything to the files, no more mods.

Uh, what?
Most monitors run at 60Hz, so having more than 60 fps = frame tearing.
If you have a 120Hz monitor, then you probably are gaming in 3D, so you're actually still getting 60Hz.

I don't see any frame tearing running CS:S at 150+ fps at all times using a 60hz lcd, but I can definitely notice a difference between 60 fps and 100 fps while playing, everything helps in competition.

The human eye seriously can hardly notice the difference at that high Frames Per Second.
Also, OnLive will never be good for competitive FPS gaming, especially with a mouse, the lag between your movement, the cloud gathering that data, and it being reflected on the screen is very noticeable.

Also OnLive is 5$ a month, plus full sticker price for the games.

With a 60Hz monitor, you are only seeing 60 frames per second. The screen can only refresh 60 frames in a second regardless of how many frames your GPU is rendering per second.

And do you have V-Sync on, Chem!st? I suspect not since you're getting 150+ fps.

That's what I was implying Ph?bus. Rarely are you going to see 150+ FPS unless you have a monitor with a refresh rate that high, i.e 3D gaming monitors.

I was typing really fast and left out a big chunk of the post. I should have split it into two parts, but I was trying to say two things, one that I don't notice screen tearing on my LCD and that two 100+ fps really does help in competition on a 120hz CRT which most competitive professional FPS players use, and was just questioning how much OnLive can pull to see how good it is.

I understand the whole Hz/Fps concept, I just left out the whole point of my post.. oops.

Also, I don't use Vsync.

Thing I hate most about Onlive so far, is its going to be very geographically restricted, going to be a US only thing and I really really hate that!

A slap in the face saying "sorry but you don't live here so therefore you don't get access"
They say they are going to expand into other country's but not for years after US gets covered.

So anyone not living in states.. we are out of luck.
