With all the new admins, and for some old ones, i thought it might be appropriate to share some of the less known tricks. This one is pretty important and makes the life of an admin much easier.
Alt+Tab can be a necessary function when you admin: to check things on the site, to type in IRC when you need to ask a question from others, to join a Vent channel; the reasons are many. As installed Steam games will minimize if you Alt+Tab, sometimes causing crashes or glitches. There is a simple solution, credit should go to agent86, which makes Alt+Tab as simple as switching internet browser windows.
Steam allows you to set launch options, meaning these commands you put in are executed when the games launches with different effects. These are the desired launch options: -windowed -noborder
-windowed allows you to run the game as a window
-noborder allows you to expand that window to fit your screen
To add launch options right-click on the game you need and select Properties. At the bottom you will see a button with SET LAUNCH OPTIONS...
Input your commands separated by space, do not forget the - without a space in front of the command. For example this is how i have mine: -novid -windowed -noborder -condebug
After you launch the game you may need to tweak your settings. You must have the right aspect ratio and resolution for your screen to fill it completely. For example i have a 16:10 ratio and 1920x1200 resolution, and your game video options should reflect those settings.
A word of caution to CS:S and INS. Those games in the past have not worked well with the -noborder -windowed options, meaning the fit on the screen was off a little. Since CS:S was upgraded that problem should be fixed, though i think INS will still show some space at the top and bottom.
I hope this serves you well.
Three cheers for Frank.
