Hi!

Looking to buy a monitor, but I'm clueless about "aspect ratios" and all that jazz.

All I know is that I need a 23" monitor around $160 before tax and I found three candidates:

One

Acer X233HBD 23" Widescreen LCD Monitor, Black , 1920x1080, 5MS, 40000:1 (DCR), 300 cd/m2, VGA, DVI -Retail

$170 CDN

Linked here.

Two

Samsung E2320X, 23" Widescreen LCD Monitor, 1920x1080, 5ms, 70000:1(DCR), VGA, DVI-D

$170 CDN

Linked here.

Three

LG W2343T-PF, 23" Widescreen HD 1080p LCD, 5ms (G to G), 1920 x 1080, 30,000:1(DFC), 16:9, HD-1080P, Black (Retail Box)

$160

Linked here.

I don't really care about the appearance of the actual monitor and all three brands are acceptable to me. I'm just not sure how to tell them apart in terms of quality and such.

Help/opinions are appreciated! :)

LG&samsung are usually the best of those 2 brands

ACER is good too, i own 3 acer's and all of them are perfect, 0 dead pixels

Actually, the human eye's contrast ratio is ~100:1. So anything after that, the eye can't tell the difference.

And OP, go for the Samsung or LG. I'd go with the Samsung, though.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I think I'll go with the Samsung then. :)

Oh.. Bane.. thanks for the link, but I have a coupon for the retailer I linked to in the OP. :)

Good Choice, the Samsung is the best choiceat that price-range, because they make great screens. LG and Acer are also fair game, however, when a Samsung is part of the options, there are no more options.

Thanks again guys. :)

It's funny, though, how only a couple years ago, Sony would be in the running. Probably slightly more expensive, but still considered due to design/technical superiority.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Don't just go by specifications. The manufacturer can pretty easily throw in pixels or have the monitor have dynamic contrast to get to an amazing contrast ratio, but have the picture still look terrible.
First find a group of monitors you like the features of (Available inputs, resolution, size).
After that, go to a store and have a look at all of the monitors. Look for how the picture looks on each monitor and make sure other things about the monitor are to your taste. Don't buy the monitor from the place you look, just grab the price information.
Once you find one you like best (or get a list of which ones you like best) and search for the lowest price from a good source. Online sites like newegg and amazon often have the lowest prices for technology, and they usually don't require taxes (unless you are unlucky enough for them to have a supply center in your state). Shipping is a bummer and returns aren't the easiest, but the price often can be worth it.

I've got a Samsung Syncmaster 23" , no dead pixels and love it as well as a 23.6" ASUS and love it as well with no dead pixels. Any monitor will do just fine as long as its 23" + . I've seen some crazy deals on newegg lately, like the 27" ASUS was on sale one time for $239.

This thread made me feel like searching for my monitor online... I feel special now that I know I got it for $79 instead of $180-$400... (Thank you, Best Buy!)

Anyways, great choice iEye!
