Ok, I was planning a zombie themed airsoft event around Halloween. I need opinions on the rules and advice on key details. Brace yourself, this may be the longest OP in EGO history.
The things I need advice on:
The things I need advice on:
- What is the best way to get participants?
- Legality, would it be legal to play this on a stretch of land by the river? There is abandoned buildings and other landmarks that would serve a scenario great! The only other option is to get all participants to travel 5 hours to the nearest airsoft field.
- Gun Rentals and On Site vendors, how could I get a nearby airsoft shop to sponsor the event?
Valley of the Dead (name can be contested)
General Rules and Regulations
- All airsoft weapons must be chronographed at <350 fps with on site ammunition.
- Players are only allowed one additional clip of ammo for their weapon (two total). If you only own real-capacity magazines you may bring enough to carry as high as you can get in your respective weapons' ceiling.
- No punching, kicking, biting, scratching, eye prodding, or slamming people into walls/floors at any time. Pushing is acceptable in some scenarios (see Infected rules)
- All ammunition must weigh .20g or under.
- All players must wear eye protection
- At any time a real emergency happens, call out CEASEFIRE! EMERGENCY! as loud as you can until it travels down the field. Contact an event coordinator immediatly.
- If there is a crack in a fake building or base, it is to be treated as if its not there. Meaning no shooting through cracks.
- Do not aim for the head. It may work well in the movies, but in this game it could cause injury.
- Follow your class/team specific rules.
- Emptying magazines is prohibited unless you're at base camp, sharing magazines however is acceptable.
- No excessive overshooting.
- Magazines may not go over their ammo ceiling: AEGs: 100 round max, Spring Shotguns: 168 pellets, Gas Pistols: 30, Spring Pistols: 60, Spring Revolvers: 60, Gas Revolvers: 45
- Infected must keep Balaclavas on at all times.
- Melee weapons are allowed as long as the weapon does not exceed 40 inches in total length. Melee weapons must be either Nerf or boffer foam.
- Rubber knifes are allowed, but not as stabbing or slashing weapons (see knife)
- No shooting directly down onto peoples heads from large towers or on top of buildings.
- No wind-up or high capacity magazines.
- Barricading is allowed if the EC says so and ONLY in the manner he/she says so.
- Violation of any of these rules will result in ejection from the game.
Survivor Rules
Survivors are broken down into 3 different categories; Civilians, Police, and Military. Each group has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Civilians
Civilians are not allowed to wear any military BDUs or camo at all; they must wear civilian clothes. Civilians should also refrain from using plate carriers, SWAT vests, or other highly militarized tactical gear. Shoulder bags, belts with pouches, backpacks, shoulder holsters, hip holsters, thigh holsters, hydration pouches, and small satchels are fine.
- Civilians may only use gas or spring pistols, shotguns, and bolt-action rifles. AEPS are also acceptable if they have the small magazines (no extended mags)
- Civilians may use approved nerf or boffer foam weapons.
- Civilians may use approved rubber knives.
- Only Civilians may use a Chainsaw weapon.
- Civilians may NOT use riot shields, AEGs, M203 launchers, or flamethrowers.
Police/Law Enforcement
Police must be in full black BDUs, full navy blue BDUs, or a police outfit/impression. Just wearing black or navy blue clothing doesn't cut it... it has to be a uniform or BDU or some effort has to be put into it so that it is obvious you are law enforcement. Resident Evil impressions that are S.T.A.R.s related are also allowed. Police are only allowed black tactical gear (NO OTHER COLORS ALLOWED!).
- Police may use gas or spring pistols, shotguns, and bolt-action rifles.
- Police may use MP5, M4, and MP7 style AEGs. (NO HI-CAPS)
- Police may use approved nerf or boffer foam weapons.
- Police may use approved rubber knives.
- Only Police are allowed to use in-game Riot shields.
- Police may NOT use M203 launchers, flamethrowers, or chainsaws.
Military
Military must be in full ACU BDUs with a helmet or ACU headpiece (Patrol cap, tactical cap, boonie, dew rag, etc) of some sort. Helmets and Tactical gear are NOT required to be in ACU. ACU is the ONLY BDU camo allowed for military. You may only use camouflage, tan, or black tactical caps.
- Military may use gas or spring pistols, shotguns, and bolt-action rifles.
- Military may use any AEG variant. (NO HI-CAPS)
- Military may use approved Nerf or boffer foam weapons.
- Military may use approved rubber knives.
- Only Military are allowed to use M203 launchers.
- Only Military are allowed to use flamethrowers.
- Military may NOT use riot shields or chainsaw weapons.
Infected Rules
Infected players can theoretically wear anything and still be a zombie, but they are encouraged to wear something unique, bloody, or cool when it is their turn to play as a zombie. Bloody shirts, severed limbs, and exposed guts are encouraged! Infected are not allowed to use any equipment or weapons of any sort.
Infected players must put on and wear the appropriate “infected” balaclava. This balaclava will be provided to you during game day.
Infected players WILL take short range shots, so plan accordingly. Infected players should cover all of their exposed skin and wear gloves! They are encouraged to wear a few extra layers of clothing to pad themselves from painful shots. Although precautions are set in place to help minimize the risk of painful shots, do not attend this event if you cannot handle this aspect of the game.
If an infected player comes into physical contact with a survivor, they initiate a grapple. Infected players CANNOT initiate a grapple from the ground... no reanimating and grabbing ankles as people pass by. A zombie player should announce "GRAPPLE" when they touch someone to signal to the player that you have them. When a survivor is grappled, they must immediately fall to the ground with the zombie and pretend to struggle. As soon as the grapple is taken to the ground, the zombie player begins a 10 second countdown. If no help arrives after 10 seconds, the survivor is mauled to death. If a player manages to pull an approved rubber knife (NO STABBING! Just hold the knife) before the end of the 10 seconds, they manage to kill the zombie before they are mauled (see below for knife rules). If at any time a second zombie joins the grapple, the survivor is mauled to death. If another survivor shoots or clubs the zombie to death (a player cannot shoot or beat a zombie until both players are on the ground and the grapple has initiated) before the 10 seconds elapse, the grappled player will survive and can get back up. A grappled survivor cannot use any of those weapons, including boffers.
Any survivor successfully mauled by a zombie or group of zombies will role play being eaten and dying and then put on their Infected Balaclava. After one minute, the newly infected player will rise and join the ranks of the zombies. As soon as this player is downed once, they will pull out a kill rag and go back to the survivor respawn in order to reinsert into the game as a new survivor.
An Infected player takes 3 BB hits or 3 boffer hits to down. A downed Infected player falls to the ground (they cannot stand unless conditions are terribly muddy/sloppy). After two full minutes, they may get back up. Infected players continue to reanimate in this way indefinitely unless they are "mutilated" in one of 2 ways. (1) They choose to, because they are in a hopeless situation or their body is being camped. (2) They are downed by an M203 explosive, a flamethrower stream, or a chainsaw. A "mutilation" requires the infected player to pull out a kill rag and fall back at least 100 feet and out of sight of survivors. Once back and out of sight, they put away their kill rags and reenter the game.
Infected players cannot use team tactics, zigzag to dodge bullets, or communicate verbally (besides growling and roaring). You run directly at food sources (survivors) as fast as you can in order to feast or you may slowly lumber towards them... it is up to you. You are a savage infected human that closely resembles a rabid cannibal… act like one!
Infected players must react to different equipment in different ways.
Chainsaws- An infected zombie that attacks a human wielding a chainsaw from the front should grab hold of the chainsaw and pretend to be cut by it for up to 3 seconds. After three seconds, you are considered down and "mutilated". During this time, if you touch the human they are NOT considered infected or grappled. If the human breaks contact before three seconds, you are still considered alive. Only one zombie at a time can be chainsaw killed. Chainsaws cannot "mutilate" downed zombies.
Riot Shields- If you attack a human with a riot shield, you must continue attacking them even though you cannot kill them without help from another zombie. Hold onto the edges of the shield and push around the player holding the riot shield, but you cannot break contact with him at all. It will take an additional zombie to grapple the survivor with a riot shield.
Shotguns- Multiple shot shotguns will be able to down a zombie in one shot, so pay attention to what hits you... you should be able to tell the difference between a single spring pump shotgun and a tri-burst shotgun.
Bats / Clubs / Axes- If you grab onto a melee weapon, but have yet to touch the player, he/she is not down. Large two handed weapons knock you down with one hit, but do not kill you with one hit. You may attempt to dodge melee attacks. In order to be killed with any of these weapons you must be hit 3 times.
M203 Shower Shells- Any zombies hit by the sprays of BBs from a 40mm grenade shower shell are "mutilated".
Flamethrowers- A low powered spray airsoft BB flamethrower downs and "mutilates" a zombie. Also, a flamethrower may be sprayed at other downed zombies and "mutilate" them to clean up the bodies. If you are sprayed by a flamethrower, you should role play being burned alive.
Melee Combat
Any zombie player who touches a survivor initiates a grapple; the survivor must immediately fall to the ground and pretend to struggle with the zombie and call for help. This initiates a 10 second countdown. If no help arrives after 10 seconds, the survivor is mauled to death. If the survivor manages to pull a rubber knife by the end of the 10 seconds, they defend themselves and kill the attacking zombie. If at any time a second zombie joins the grapple, the survivor is mauled to death. If another survivor shoots or clubs the zombie to death (you cannot shoot or beat a zombie until both players are on the ground and the grapple has initiated) before the 10 seconds elapse, the grappled player will survive and can get back up. A grappled survivor cannot use any of his weapons.
Riot Shields
A player with a riot shield cannot be grappled by a single zombie. With a riot shield, it takes two zombies (one on the shield and one on the player) to successfully grapple a survivor and it takes three zombies to overpower and maul a survivor. When a zombie is pressed up against a riot shield, you cannot shoot them with any weapon (within 10 feet) but you can beat them to death with a boffer weapon. Riot shields cannot be used to shield rush or slam people, so be careful when you use one. Riot shields DO NOT block BBs and any BB striking a shield is considered to hit the player.
Chainsaws
Two hands must be used on a chainsaw for it to be used. If a zombie attacks a player from the front, the survivor may down a zombie by pressing the chainsaw onto the zombie player. A full three seconds of contact must be kept in order to down the zombie... breaking contact means the zombie is still alive. If a zombie is downed by a chainsaw, they are considered "mutilated". If a zombie grapples a survivor from the back or if a survivor is holding the chainsaw in one hand, the chainsaw does not help.
Rubber Knives
Any survivor may carry an approved rubber knife. This cannot be used as a slashing or stabbing weapon but is merely a prop that allows you to survive being grappled with a zombie. Normally, a survivor who is grappled and taken to the ground by a lone zombie will be mauled to death in 10 seconds. If the survivor pulls a rubber knife during the grapple, they instead kill the zombie after the 10 seconds. They only win the grapple after the FULL 10 seconds has passed. You cannot be grappled, pull out a knife, and then run off... you must go to the ground in the grapple and only win after the 10 seconds is up. If at any time during the 10 seconds a second zombie enters the grapple, the survivor is overpowered and mauled to death.
Base Camp
The base camp is run and maintained by an EC and the Military team. At base camp you are in a semi-safe zone, meaning you will be defended while you rest and restock ammo. If you find the base overrun the rules of the camp still apply, you may restock your ammo if you wish.
