Hi my father-in law has a problem with his computer could anyone help me out with this it has been a problem once before in which i just saved all his stuff and reinstalled the OS. I would like to not reinstall the OS this time. Anyone help me out? Picture is as follows and is IMO self explanatory

Needing opinions on what should be done.

I have defragged check disked even ran a couple of recovery programs to attempt to recover whatever might have caused this. Did a "revert back to last known good config" etc etc. Safe mode does not work either same error when i try that.

Do you get this error randomly or is it seen when performing a certain activity/task (if this, what task)?

One option that you could attempt, involves not a total reinstall but still requries the OS Disk. What you could try is to load it up, and then select 'Repair Installation.' With luck, it will recognize the faulty winlogon.exe and could replace it with a brand new one ^_^

Also, have you attempted to google said error and read up on other user's responses?

try back uppping every thing first, then try options, just a friendly tip, your father - in - law doesn't want to lose all his files, i suggest u do.

Would you guys think its actually a runtime error in the C++ anyone know a way of replacing the whole C++ for windows? the error suggest that its not winlogon that is corrupt but the Microsoft C++ run times.

Yes I have unfortunately it was of no help, plus most sites that had the "solution" to the problem wanted me to pay for it. I will try the OS disk what i did was plug his HD into my computer and manually move my winlogon via copy / paste to replace his.

Yeah all the files he wants are already backed up to his external and mine =)

the activity or task would be booting up the computer get it every time without fail when the computer boots up. I mean EVERY time.

i don't think u will have much choice. it's a windows32 file. Thats a file ya need when u start. If that is corrupt, then your OS is not gonna work. Still, i'm not sure so u should wait and see what other ppl say.

let us know if this fixed your problem..... it would seem that this virus/trojan, whatever, attacks superantispyware directly.

Definantly sounds like a virus or operating system file corruption. There are several problems that could cause this to happen, and very few of them are actually caused by the file itself.

If it is just the operating system being corrupted, a repair installation of windows would work to fix it. You would have to reinstall all of windows updates, but your programs would remain installed and your personal files would be unchanged.

Because life is rarely that simple, you probably should make a full backup of the personal files on the system, reinstall your operating system, and scan the files thoroughly for viruses before copying them back to the computer.

Unfortunantly, once a virus gets onto a system, it is very difficult to remove it. Installing another virus scanner on an infected system might be able to catch it, but probably won't.

If i do anything it will be through a Live CD I have the "ultimate boot CD" which has everything and then some. Good diagnostic CD as well. I'll probably plug his HD into my system and boot upto my os so i can look for said file in superantispyware. Failing that i will try the recovery options that are available.

Hmm weird okay i will try this i do believe he has superantispyware because spybot S&D apparently is not good enough for him.

here's some more information about the bug with SuperAntiSpyware and a little more detail on the solution:
http://forums.superantispyware.com/index.php?/topic/2570-buffer-overrun-detected-winlogonexe/

But the update that caused this bug happened over a year ago. And even then, it only happened with a version of SAS that was over 2 years old. So don't get your hopes up too high
