Yeah, you will be able to turn it back on really fast. There are ways to add it to the exceptions list and things. Just see if this method works first. Sorry that your having problems still.

It would appear there is more to address here than just Steam problems.

You're not likely to receive a virus unless you download questionable files, or download from questionable sources.

You are not likely to get hacked unless it's personal or you leave a lot of loose ends strewn about the internet.

It's nearly vain to consider that YOUR pc is the target of the internet's best attempts at hacking\virus delivery etc... Most of this only occurs when you have clicked "Ok".

With that being said, having your stuff disabled and limiting your internet traffic only to Steam is not particularly unsafe. The communications between your computer and them will likely be untainted as that company spends a lot of money monitoring their end of the situation. Steam is not about to let anyone just up and hack them, lace their files with trojan viruses and then allow them to be downloaded onto client PCs. They would also not like to see people that use their product getting hacked because their pc's information is unprotected when they are connected to them.

Disabling your security features for a brief time to diagnose a problem is not categorically hazardous.

If it makes you feel any better, I personally do not use anti-virus software any more on my personal PC. I install the hell out of it on everyone else's computers, but, enough research on the topic and enough personal internet hygiene and, voila! No worries for myself and my files.

Yes I understand what you mean, but my parents are strict and trust me I would disable it if I could.

Does running steam on -tcp work and what does it do?
Are these the only suggestions or am I screwed for life?

Reformat>Reinstall Windows>Fresh Steam Install>Test

If everything operates after that, transfer any old game files you need (config\binds, sprays, maps, etc..) to the new steam install's appropriate folders and you should be back to fraggin peeps in no time.





Oh yeah, do I know from CS 1.6? I swear we played together on some server quite a number of times...

You don't need to reformat like he's suggesting. That's wiping your whole computer. This is a very simple issue to fix, you don't need to reinstall windows to fix it -.-

Well, basically this error is something on your end that is blocking the connection. We just have to figure out what. CCleaner just cleans up files off your computer, not exactly sure why it would help, but you might as well download and run it, all you do is open it and click run cleaner.

Try this when you can.

1. Turn off compatibility mode on the steam.exe's again, make sure they are unchecked, delete all the files except the steam.exe in your c://program files/steam folder. Then right click on steam.exe and run ad administrator.

If that doesn't work

Go to system and security in the control panel. Then under windows firewall there is "Allow a program though windows firewall" go to that. Find and highlight steam and click on the "Change settings" button then make sure all the check marks are checked then click ok.

It's really frustrating, because if you had access you could fix this in like 5minutes, instead of dragging this out forever.

I'm a member of the clan Mamma Jamma from my 1.6 days. Maybe I know you from one of their servers? My Steam name is exodusjkd.

Glad you got your problem all figured it out

I understand and a reformat+reinstall is probably considered pretty extreme amongst some. I used to do that on my old PC on a whim and with Windows XP and IDE hard disks, believe me. It takes some time. My current setup allows for a full reformat and install in only about 34 minutes. This however is due to a combination of Windows 7 and much more advanced hardware being used.

That can be, but is not a guaranteed catch all for computer problems. I even tend to use it as my personal "anti-virus" but I still tend to use software to see if I can go without doing it. Nasty warez do tend to require the use of a full reformat of a system disk before they will die, I've learned. Unfortunately with Steam and CS:S, the damn "cloud" has been on for a while for most people, so now there is a process for a previous account holder to reinstall fresh and get rid of the old settings they've used and tried to tweak with that may be causing them performance losses.
