Reinstalling Windows

Okay, so here's the deal... I'm about to reinstall my OS pretty soon since I've had some problems with the current OS I'm running, but the thing is, I wish to save some of the files that are in my current OS. Now, I've been trying to look for some ways and I've found only the ones that just don't work for me.

Any suggestions from the folks here?

Simple answer to a complex problem: backup your files! save them somewhere else, reinstall your OS, and then throw those suckers back on! By the way, what ways don't work for you?

Putting the files into CD's and stuff... But that doesn't matter anymore.

I found another way - hard drive partitioning. If I do separate the hard drive in two, will the install touch the other one if I do reinstall Windows?

You choose which ever partition you want to format before the installation starts. It's best to make them both different sizes, so you don't get confused.

Of course I will. The files I need weight only about 40gb and my HDD is 250 so there's plenty of space for the main so I wouldn't get confused.

But does this really work? I need a guarantee because I don't want to lose all the games and game mods I've collected. >.<

May I say, BACKUP FILES TO CD! The change over from OS to OS likes to fail...Alot. When I upgraded my old PC form XP to Vista, it decided to die on me and I had to get a new PC. I am just saying this to be safe since computer like to fail when you least expect it.

And I'm just reinstalling XP, not upgrading to Vista. And yes, the computer might die, but maybe the HDD stays alive.

All I need is guarantee that if I split the hard drive, the install won't touch it.

There is no "guarantee".
You can take a shot with partitions, while it SHOULDN'T touch it, there is never a guarantee.
Make sure you know what you're doing before you partition it to avoid ruining your hard drive completely.

I'm thinking about reinstalling my OS cause my computer is being a huge DB. Isn't there a program that like checks your system files for errors and what not?

Either get an External Harddrive, multiple DVDs or what I would personally do is upload it, to sites like:

Compress it to multiple archives, It will take a lot of time to upload but, if you really want to keep the files then ya

Keep the links and re-download after the installation.

Copy and paste the links from whatever site you use if you do it this way to Notepad and print it out, but press enter 2-3 times before you put a new link in so it doesn't look confusing and clumped together. After you reinstall Windows, type the links into the address bar on the browser you use manually and re-download.

if you have another computer around with windows on it you could backup your files on that computer with Windows simple file sharing.
