Hi, Ricwulf here.

Just quickly, I live in Australia, and I don't know how the American and other systems work, but I have a High School Certificate, HSC, which is pretty much your final exams and gives you a mark of how skilled and smart you are. Just saying so you understand my terms a little bit better.

So, I'm in need of a little help. I'm currently in Year 11 and I'm about to go to Year 12, and I need to construct my HSC Design and Technology project. So what I need is to put out a survey to people. So I'm putting it onto a few forum sites around the web for some feed back and results. I'll tell you what I'm doing, and then some questions, and also some of my already known research/knowledge.

So, what my problem is listening to audio while either studying, working, or other at a desk. My solution to the problem is to construct a study desk that has speakers inbuild with a headphone jack for the mp3 players to plug into.

Would you buy this product if put at a reasonable price?
Yes/No/Depends(Specify)

Is this product a good idea?
Yes/No/Other(Specify)

What should it be made of?
Wood/Metal/Plastic/Other(Specify)
(I will not solely be using the materials alone above, but they will be mostly used)

Should there be a radio feature?
Yes/No

Should the speakers be:
Above the desktop/Under the desktop, with the speakers level with it/Tilting out of desktop/Other(Specify)

Should it be built as:
A study desk alone/Computer desk/Other(Specify)

That is the majority of questions that I can think of, anything else you think I should add, please, PM me.

I have researched a little to see if there are any other similar products on the market, and have only found two, one which seems to be specifically a speaker that is big enough to be a table, and a speaker table, but when seeing one of it's reviews (On Gizmodo) it sounds like it isn't that good. It is called the "Cox Speaker Table", and from the review it said that it would be hard to write on with the vibrations from the sound, and that you would be extremely tense whenever someone placed a cup on it.
With my design I believe that if it is made to be sturdy, the vibrations wouldn't be a problem. As for the cup/spilt liquids, I have yet to find a solution to it entirely.
I'm also tossing up the idea of having the speakers built into a separate container that would fit into the back of the desk, and have plugs for audio controls(volume, radio, on/off, etc.), or have it built in entirely.

Also, if anyone could link others to here, or give me links to any other forum sites that would help me with this, that would be fantastic.

So if you have the time to help me, that would be GREAT. I will be finishing reading any replies after the 31st of December 2010, but I still need results asap, because it is all needed, and the sooner the better.

Thank you in advance, Ricwulf.

Yes, Its innovative, but wouldn't it be easier to just buy speakers? Or is this supposed to be an add-on for a table that will put the speakers in the table?

Is this product a good idea?
Yes/No/Other(Specify)

Again, yes. But the same type of thing as last time.

Wood, It would definatly suppress the vibrations from the sound the most.

Should there be a radio feature?
Yes/No

Nobody listens to the radio unless their car's stereo system doesn't have CD/Mp3 technology.

Should the speakers be:

Above the desktop/Under the desktop, with the speakers level with it/Tilting out of desktop/Other(Specify)

Put a compartment inside each side of the desk, make it tilted up and towards where the person would be sitting.

Should it be built as:
A study desk alone/Computer desk/Other(Specify)

A study desk, most monitors have speakers built into them, and if not, you have a headset for listening to things at the Computer Desk.

Thanks

Thanks BokkChoi, that is perfect, I just need a few more people to help out, and that is great.

Anyway, it is meant to be one final product, not a desk that you put speakers inside, but it is all inbuilt.
The point of it being with the audio players, is that if you already have speakers, you probably wouldn't be able to have it on your study desk or right next to you as you work/study, because of the space it takes up. So this is meant to both save desk space, as well as the normal use of speakers.

Depends on if would actually need a desk for some reason also if I would find speakers useful later on as I prefer headphones.

Is this product a good idea?
The idea I think is useful but like the first question I personally wouldn't have much use of it other than it being a desk.

What should it be made of?
Metal

Should there be a radio feature?
Why not? I would use it.

Where should the speakers be?
Built in on the sides of the desk.

What should it be built as?
Study Desk

Just posting to bring the post back up, sorry if this isn't following rules, I need results for my project though.

Hi again. Still need this feedback, so I'm bumping it up. If I'm breaking any rules, sorry, I just need this done for school badly. so yeah...

I often choose to listen to the radio over my MP3 player. Bokk's statement that 'nobody' listens to the radio anymore when they have alternative music means is inaccurate.

Would you buy this product if put at a reasonable price?
Yes/No/Depends(Specify)

Yes, i think this is a great idea... Nothing like it in the market either...

Is this product a good idea?
Yes/No/Other(Specify)

Again, yes. I would have never thought of this myself, lol.

What should it be made of?
Wood/Metal/Plastic/Other(Specify)
(I will not solely be using the materials alone above, but they will be mostly used)

Wood, I quite like the look of Oak wood, I think its the most contemporary wood at the minute.. All my school projects have been made of oak.

Should there be a radio feature?
Yes/No

No, I think it would be pointless.. A waste of time and waste of money.

Should the speakers be:
Above the desktop/Under the desktop, with the speakers level with it/Tilting out of desktop/Other(Specify)

I think the speakers should be Under the desktop and inline with the desktop :)

Should it be built as:
A study desk alone/Computer desk/Other(Specify)

A study desk, But what study desk doesn't have a computer on it? :p

Great Idea Ricwulf, I hope you get to make it!

Thank you synergy. It looks like this is going to be the project I will construct, and seeing how you are interested, during and after completion, I will post some pics for you to see it.

Thanks again for the great feedback.

Would you buy this product if put at a reasonable price?
Yes/No/Depends(Specify)

Depends. Does it swap SD cards or hook up to Wifi? Will I need batteries? What are the features with the price?

Sure, Why not?

Should the speakers be:
Above the desktop/Under the desktop, with the speakers level with it/Tilting out of desktop/Other(Specify)

Under, the bass would be nicer.

Should it be built as:
A study desk alone/Computer desk/Other(Specify)

A study desk. I can't imagine needing a MP3 built into a table with my computer right there.

Thanks for the feed back.
In response to your question of how would you get the audio, I think the easiest way to do so, is to use a standard mp3 jack, reason being is that most audio devices use this, and would be the easiest to utilise.
I haven't even thought about the wifi or SD card option, and I might look into it as another feature, but for now it isn't in the works.

Would you buy this product if put at a reasonable price?
Probably not if it was a whole desk. If it was an add-on to my current desk, I'd perhaps consider it.

Is this product a good idea?
Yeah, I'd say so.

What should it be made of?
Definitely wood.

Should there be a radio feature?
No. Unnecessary, it'll just add to the price and build.

Should the speakers be:
As long as the speakers have nothing blocking the person sitting at the desk (so not under the desk), then it's fine. People may think the bass will sound nice but bass on its own is pretty useless when you can't hear what you're listening to properly.

Should it be built as:
I'd say just a regular desk.

Would you buy this product if put at a reasonable price?
Yes, It could be useful, and fun !

Is this product a good idea?
Yes, very much so!

What should it be made of?
Wood. Wood would make the most sence.

Should there be a radio feature?
No, the radio would disturb people. Also, students would not listen to the teachers.

Should the speakers be:
Under the desk, this way you could still put your books on the desk.

Should it be built as:
Compter desk!

=)
Hope this helps !
