So I got an Epiphone Special 2 recently (for a really good bargain price) and had to re=string my new guitar.

This is where my problem comes in. At first, I gave it to a professional to string it for me, and got a really odd tip on "two day tuning" or something like that (it was from my dad and he cant speak english well). All of a sudden, three strings snapped and I had to get new ones. This time, I tried doing them and everything went perfect until three more snapped while I was tuning it.

And now, I just put in my third set and another snapped. Any tips on trying to prevent my guitar strings from snapping all of a sudden? I'm getting paranoid just trying to tune my new strings or even remotely touching them, and I dont want to spend another 5 bucks on all these strings.

Take it to a professional and have him examine the headstock. This is one reason when it comes to Gibson's and Epiphones, I only go for Les Paul Standards.

But yeah sounds like something could be out of wack with your headstock piece or the tuning gears. Also is it the same strings that keep breaking or just random ones?

Played for about 4 years now so let me know.

ive had some serious string breaking problems in the past ( i cant even count the number of times strings broke on stage with me when i was in bands.... probably 7 or 8 times -.- ) but the problem was the bridge on the 2 guitars i used, thats where the break would be ( the string would uncoil from down there )

so where is the break? thats the main indicator of whats wrong.

if its the bridge thats causing problems theres most likely a sharp edge the strings getting caught on so youll need to smooth that down, or if this doesnt work ( didnt work with me ) replace the bridge.

saying all this, it was stratocaster's that were the problem, my PRS soapbar which probably has a similar bridge to your epiphone has never been a problem for me

Dont tighten so much >_> I always keep a bit of slack, Just enough so they are not super tight.
Also what gauge/brand are you using? I prefer using Regular Slinky 9-10 gauge. Costs a bit more, but they are definitely worth it imo. Lighter gauges and off-brands tend to snap more that one would like.

My practice guitar (some random Ibanez) has had the same strings for 2 years now (2221 - Regular Slinky 10G... I think). Right now I'm looking for work so I can get back into playing.

Only had my strings break on stage once :P though it was bad, slashed me across the face >.<

lol, the only reason i didnt get kicked out of the band was cause i wrote all the music and was good at guitar... everyone was like "your doing it wrong, your supposed to play the guitar not beat it up"

i remember 3 string breaks very vividly, 1 when a string broke right at the beggining of our first song -.- so i had to use one of the other bands semi-acoustic guitars... which i was usless with making countless mistakes all the way through, 2nd was when my guitar kept cutting out for no explainable reason ( it worked fine after O_o ) so i borrowed another band's guitar and ended up snapping a string on that! ( i think that was his fault, the strings were ancient ) and the last i remember was actually at the favourite gig i ever played, in a packed pub it snapped on the last chord of our last song ( it drew a huge amount of laughter and applause :D ) and after that was when i got a new guitar since i was so fed up with it and never snapped another on stage

sorry for going off topic

that happened to me the first time my string snapped. It hurt really bad because it was the low e string, it left a nice welt.

@OP I have an Epiphone Special 2 as well! How interesting! I haven't played in a while and I'm not an expert, but I'm gana post because we have the same guitar :D
