ok, recently i've been building myself a computer, since my old one decided to ragequit on me. I've got the basic parts and I assembled everything and made sure i plugged everything in. I turn on the psu, notice the motherboard is getting power (which is all good). I go to press the power button, it lights up for a split second, i hear my monitor kick in (an old CRT), then nothing. Anyone have any ideas why I am in this predicament?

Update: I unplugged the 4pin connector of the 12pin atx power and it turned on fine (which imo is odd, considering it needed all 12). Now I still do not have a display (It stays on, but it doesn't display anything). Gonna try to figure that out.

Note: Everything but the monitor and keyboard are working

check for correct motherboard seating. You could have a loose screw or a bad contact underneath the mobo causing an electrical short.

you could also upload a picture looking down on your motherboard so we can make sure your connections are correct.

Sorry for the late post, had to go out on some emergency business. Anyway, currently the only camera i have is on my phone, which is a piece of junk. But i could just tell you my motherboard. Its an Ecs a780gm-a ultra. Currently I've been testing it out with these items:

Some old Hard drives (circa 2005, both still work)
An AMD Athlon II x2 250 clocked at 3.0ghz (Just received in mail new about a few hours ago)
Raidmax Ky450 atx psu (will upgrade soon)
1gb of DDR2-667 (all i can find at the moment, was just in a working computer, compatible for the mobo)
My brother's flatscreen tv (lol).
Stock fans on case and processor heat sink

I know I should give out more information, but given that you want what was going on inside the case, I thought that would be enough.

Check your hard drives. They could be not in the correct postions.....

I've tried them both at the same time, and separately with both set as the master. One of which was previously a slave, so i didn't expect much from it, besides an option to place a bootable disc in my drive (which, from previous experience, I have realized that it will ask regardless if you have a drive connected or not).

By the way, when I turn on my computer, I can hear the drives spin up. Thats the reason why I picked them, because they are old lol. More modern drives are harder to hear.

I would see if the motherboard isn't faulty by booting with no RAM sticks in it. If it beeps indicating the RAM is not loaded, then your motherboard still works.

Figured out the problem. Seems that my mobo wasn't getting any power through the 8pin 12v atx connector. Must be the faulty 4x2 splitter that came with it, since the psu doesn't have an 8pin available. When I connected my friend's corsair 550w psu in place, it ran like it should have (seeing that I didn't have my HDDs connected, it attempted to run from a disc). In the end I might just get another psu, so I won't have this problem in the future. Can anyone recommend a high quality psu?

Strip your motherboard down to the as bare as you can go. No hard drive, no graphics if you have onboard, no CD rom drives, etc. Just attempt to get the BIOS loaded up. If that works plug items in one by one and see what the issue is. ALso swap RAM cards when doing this. Your motherboard may very well be defective.

Antec and OCZ no. Corsair, Silverstone, or coolermaster. Those are the best 3. Used all and none have failed so far.

Noooooooooo!
Not Cooler Master.
They only have like two, maybe three good series. Everything else is jank.
Also, most Antec PSUs are good.

not really though

all modern Antec PSUs are all good, except for the Basiq series.

OCZ is mediocre for the most part, but their Z series is actually quite good

Corsair is overpriced, but all of their PSUs are good except for the CX430/500/600

Pretty much all of Silverstones PSUs are decent, some of them lack in efficecy though.

Cooler master are all crap unless they are from their "Silent Pro" line

Other good brands to consider are Seasonic and XFX, bother of whom make excellent PSUs
