So it is a known bug on steam for mac that custom maps will not automatically download and will produce an error. You have to manually find the maps and download them. So I asked steam support about this issue and they said this
Hello Michael,

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

You will need to manually install these custom maps to play them on your Mac at this time.

If you have any further questions, please let us know - we will be happy to assist you.

So basically I was told "Deal with it", I'm glad I paid for a faulty product, when I asked if there were plans to fix this problem I was told "There are no plans to fix any Mac-related bugs that don't affect core system play". Thats awesome thanks Valve!

on a serious note, if it bothers you that bad, sell the mac (some guy called oprahI or something told me that they hold their resale value well), and buy a sweet pc

Haha Definitely not worth it. I could always just install steam with cross over, or even install windows on it. I have 4 macs, and couldn't live with out them. On another note, it bothers me that they didn't offer any help or anything because that means they know that its an issue, and there is no fix available.

Or maybe they're working on it. Yeesh.

Shouldn't be playing computer games on a Mac anyway. *cough*

I mean, come on - Source has been out for years as it is and only recently have they added Mac support. I'm afraid Mac is a niche market at this time, hence their priorities are not focused on custom map downloads.

They shipped a product to work out of the box the way it was shipped. Any aftermarket/custom support is second in line.

Who says it's a bug with STEAM anyway? Perhaps it's something with OSX and external download servers?

I figured it out.

Steve Jobs used his massive ego to block custom map downloads in game. Valve is currently working on how to hack into his ego to get around it.

That is what happened.

Damn that man. Anyone figured out how to turn the iPod into a ninja star yet?

Well, it doesn't work correctly, there are problems with the downloading of maps, the sound (always hear like screeching sounds), frame rate drops, etc. Also your point on its something wrong with OSX, its not an os's job to be compatible to programs, its the other way around. Thats like saying its my unleaded cars fault for not being able to use diesel.

iOprah, i feel you're pain.. I'm also a Mac, and I'm going to buy a PC pretty soon.. lol, Mac's are brilliant for what they do though! Just not for gaming, I have problems downloading custom maps, and fpsbanana doesn't even load for me on a mac, they are PC based! Also I can't even find the correct folder for where all the DoD:S maps are stored, there is no steam folder! :(

This is already easy enough to do. They have to agree to sell the maps on iTunes and then let Apple take a cut of the profit. ;)

1. Downloading of maps - could be a bug, or could be an issue with how OSX works with downloading content externally while in the game.

2. Sound problems? Could be a driver issue. I had to rollback a set of audio drivers for my Creative card at one point because a game I had was't compatible with the newer driver until the driver was patched.

3. Frame rate drops? Possibly optimization / Source engine issues, but could also be driver related. I've had a few games that were choppy until a driver update resolved performance issues with games.

While a game developer develops for an operating system, there are times when the OS and the developers of system drivers are at fault. Don't blame the game or game developer unless you can prove beyond a doubt it's the game.

To go with your analogy - if your car runs on regular unleaded fuel and works great, that doesn't mean using super premium unleaded will run better or at all. If the engine can't handle the higher octane fuel, it's the car manufacturers fault.

frame rate drops can be attributed to OSX. Since M$ wont licence DirectX to apple, OSX games are rendered with OpenGL which is far less efficient than DX is.

all modern GPUs are optimized for DirectX because that is what 95% of games are rendered with.

All the issues I reported are well known and well reported issues within the Steam for Mac community, its not my computer, my drivers, or anything. I run Games like the sims 3 with no problem what so ever, also non-valve steam games work well too. I have tried this on two different macs and each have the same problem. As for the frame rate problem, I normally get 130-180fps, however at times it will drop to 5-10 fps and audio will cut out, making it impossible to play. This can only be fixed my closing and restarting steam.

This is the error:
ConVarRef sm_spray_version doesn't point to an existing ConVar
SetConVar: No such cvar ( sm_spray_version set to 5.3d), skipping
No pure server whitelist. sv_pure = 0
Missing map maps/ba_jail_inception_v1.bsp, disconnecting

its a steam/CS:S error, not a mac osx error, DOD:S downloads custom maps fine, however TF2 and CS:S don't.

P.S. On Mac OSX there is no such thing as Drivers, at least in the sense of what windows has. All mac OSX discs have all the driver information for all computers released within the period of the OS. You cannot update them from the hardware manufacture or anything. Any driver updates (if there ever are, I've seen maybe one) are released by apple on apple software update.

I can get FPSbanana to load, what kind of mac do you have? Also try the browser although safari, firefox, and chrome all work with it as far as I have seen. Also the steam folder is located in User/Your Home folder name/library/application support/steam then it looks just like the windows steam folder in program files.

The sims 3 requires a lot, especially with the graphics all the way up.
Intel Core Duo Processor
2 GB RAM
ATI X1600 or Nvidia 7300 GT with 128 MB of Video RAM, or Intel Integrated GMA X310

When all the way up it is really power intensive. Obviously my system far out shines the minimum requirements but I really don't have anything to compare it to as I am not much of a gamer, except for DoD:S and CS:S.

is that what mac guys think is alot?

GMA x3100 isnt really even considered a GPU around here
