So i can pick up a brand new Vertex 2 60gb SSD. Is it worth it for $100?? HDD is my main bottleneck, i have a 250gb 7200RPM seagate thats pretty old. Should i buy it hahaha??

Would mainly use it for OS and i guess a few things with the extra space not being used for the OS, everything extra goes on the regular HDD or external.

$100 for almost 300MBps read and write is a steal.

Even 60GB's is a great capacity for that price. Yes and yes. OCZ is a great brand as well.

Can't speak to the specific drive as I've got an Intel, but a SSD boot drive is totally worth it.

Go to BestBuy and get a 72$ 1TB HDD , WD Caviar Green

For about $60 more i can pick this super talent up with 128gb but it is older and the performance is less.

which to choose??

1. Best Buy does not have the best buy. Proof.
2. An SSD completely destroys any standard HDD on speed.

@OP: Seeing as how the Vertex 2 60GB is going for $130 on newegg, you've got a pretty good deal there. Just remember you'll only be seeing performance increases on stuff on the SSD so that'll only be Windows if it's a boot drive. You might be able to get a couple of games on there but not too much else.

SSD's are win.

Don't listen to people that don't have them.

$100 for a Sandforce drive is a pretty good deal.

It is a 50k IOP model right?

Yes, the vertex 2 is the 50k IOP model. The Agility 2 is about 10k.

I think ima just go with the 60gb OCZ vertex 2. I was only thinking about the 120gb supertalent because im going to be getting a laptop for college down the road so i figured maybe it would be better with 120gb. But when the time comes for the laptop, i could just get another 60gb ssd in there and put everything else on an external if i even have anything since my desktop will still be my main.

This desktop deserves the SSD lol

personally I would get this instead

what can u do with a 60gb drive these days? install an operating system, a tenth of your games, and half your music collection (unless you use FLAC) lol

Velociraptors have a lot of down falls compared to SSD's.

1. They're slower
2. They're louder
3. They use more power
4. They're less reliable
5. They give off a lot of heat

There's all the reasons why you should get an SSD and not a velociraptor.

The Vertex 2 is a wonderful SSD. I have the 120GB version, and it is absolutely stunning. Those of you guys that are suggesting something other than an SSD doesn't know what an SSD is about. The whole point of getting an SSD is to put your Operating system and vital programs on it. When you do that, it speeds up your computer dramatically. You do not need your games on the SSD for your system to feel significantly faster. Having the OS files on tap and with a 0.1ms response time makes your computer responsive like you've never felt it before. I can literally log on to my computer and have every program loaded into RAM and ready to go as soon as I type in my password. Not even Hard Drives in RAID 0 are capable of that sort of speed.

Here's some stats from my 120GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD:

Windows Startup time: 10-15 seconds
Shut down time: less than 7 seconds.
lag time on opening firefox: none
Starcraft II (installed on my SSD) loads twice as fast and is far more responsive than it was on my 640GB Western Digital Caviar HDD.

After having an SSD for several weeks, I can say without a doubt that the SSD is the single best upgrade I've made to my computer in years. You guys have no idea how slow a traditional HDD is. Even Velociraptors are very slow compared to SSD's with the Sandforce controller (like the Vertex 2). Do you guys remember the first time you upgraded the ram on your computer? The computer went from "slow" to "fast and responsive" instantly. It's the same way moving from an HDD to an SSD.

Seriously, I can keep raving about this all day long, but those of you that have never used an SSD would still not understand what I'm talking about, nor would you believe me.

Whew... now that that's over...

Yes, that 60GB Vertex 2 SSD is a great drive for $100. You should get that as your OS drive. It will make a huge difference. :thumbup1:

1. Yes they are slower, but for the same amount of cash you get 250% more capacity at slightly slower speeds.
2. I cant hear my velociraptor at all, basic case soundproofing does wonders.
3. more power? the velociraptor pulls a maximum of 5.5 watts. thats nothing. The only instance where it would matter is battery life in laptops.
4. less reliable how? ssd's have a shorter lifespan than a velociraptor.

Well, i don't really need a ton of space. I have a 250gb 7200rpm seagate that will be fine for the occasional music, videos, and games. Yes the main purpose of the SSD is to put my OS on it, a few games and some programs. I barely use up my 250gb hahaha cuz i delete all my movies after i watch em. I only have used like 100gb lmfao.

We'll see, i don't really game that much anymore :( im trying to just move to a laptop. Anyone wants to buy my setup, feel free to give me an offer lol. As of now, its on craigslist just to see what offers/trades it can get.

Only thing i touch is CS:S still lol, and xbox 360 for playing wit friends.

1. You put essential programs on the SSD, and everything else on a traditional HDD. That 250% capacity is negated by the responsiveness of the OS. Try it. You'll be amazed.
2. In a quiet case, you can hear a Velociraptor. The SSD is silent. First hand experience.
3. That SSD uses 2 watts at load.
4. Hard Drives have moving parts. Eventually that motor will go out, and it might take the platters with it. The SSD has no moving parts and is far more durable (If you drop an SSD, it's no big deal.) Therefore, the SSD is more reliable.

SSD > Velociraptor
