Seriously?!

I have agreed more with Dutch and Stormy on the forums lately than not...I have been on some pretty good terms (well at least not the usual "I hate you" "I hate you too" "I'll kill you!" "I'll kill you first!") with leadership...seriously--this is some Twilight Zone stuff.

Anyways, on to seeryus bizness...

I mentioned a week...two weeks?...a little while ago about wanting to do a sort of "A Year Through WWII" thing on the forums and I am really thinking I wanna give it a shot and it sounds like people were interested. If you find history boring, at least make sure you read the paragraph near the end...#2 of "my goals". I've still gotta meet with Leadership about it, just to get their input, but it looks like in order to do this right, I have to start from the beginning.

After all, what good does it do to go into details about a war, when you don't first discuss what started the war? That seems pretty irresponsible of me. Soooo...before I jump into the events of WWII, I am gonna cover the events that lead to WWII. One of the biggest ones, of course, is WWI. Therefore, I am going to do a brief walkthrough of WWI (hey, a lot of people don't actually know about it). However...if I just start with "Hey, here's WWI" without saying what started it, I would be pretty hypocritical, huh? SOOO...we are going to start all of this with events leading up to the outbreak of WWI! And trust me...some of them are direct factors in the history of WWII as well, so it fits in.

"Why are you telling us all this, YSD?"

Good question. I know I could just say BAM, Here it is! but...I really don't want to do that. I do want your guys' input on things. Especially if you are not American (this goes 2x for people outside of North America), PM or IM me anything you feel is pertinent. Truth be told, there are two problems with history:
1) In America, you learn American history (or our involvement in the wars). Same goes in Canada (you learn Canadian history), Germany (Germany in history), and everywhere else.
2) History is written by the winners.

Here are my two goals:
1) Teach you the history as factually as I possibly can. I love the history myself, so share stuff with me and let me check it out. Also...guys...I will mess things up. Here's the perfect opportunity for you to blast me.....or show some character and send me a message about how wrong I was, why you think I was wrong, and then let me swallow my pride and correct myself. I'd like to think I am going to portray everything correctly, but...I'm kidding us all if I claim I will get it all right.
2) To present things in a hopefully-interesting way. I know a lot of people find history boring. I don't, myself, but I can sure see how/why others might. I am going to do my best not to just throw a wall of text up there, maybe with a chart or two of force numbers, and say "HERES DA HISTOWY. LERN STUFFS." Nope. I am gonna try to use pictures, movies (you'll see), object lessons, maps, charts, analogies, etc. etc. If you're one of the "Gah I hate history" people, I want to hear from you too.

So there it is. Starting off with "events leading up to WWI"--hopefully on January 1 (if it is late...see: my signature for the reason why). If you've got stuff, send it in. I will give you credit unless you say otherwise.

As you wish YSD.

Im going to once again save everyone some time:

Blah!?

Stormy is always right but i have only begun to realize this. Blah blah blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. History is biased. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Need to cover WWI and the stuff before WWI to lead into WWII. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. I won't get everything right, so plese correct me. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

Blah blah blah January 1st.

I personally find WW2 the most interesting segment of history. This includes the events and occurrences that took place within it, such as the holocaust, the events that led up to the war and the post war effect on society, mainly Europe, and the coming of the iron curtain.

All other mass portions of history are either completely uninteresting to me, or partially interesting to me for a short period of time.

I myself have no questions regarding WW2 or any other occurrence mentioned in the OP.. BUT. I do think that anyone actually half interested should ask away.

I think it's great to educate members who lack considerable knowledge about WW2 to what's REALLY good with their favorite online FPS. :)

Nice post, YSD.

ROFL...this thread is hilarious...

anyhoo...i was, in fact, wondering what perspective you would be telling about the war from...i for one am very displeased by the american history books...far too incomplete and far too short winded on very important topics (such as the world wars)...i think the one that gets me the most though is that Tesla is completely over looked in history books...probably one of the greatest inventors/scientists in US history and kicked to the curb for the likes of Thomas Edison...blah..

Most of you guys only know about ww2 through history books and the writer writes as he see's it . Not wrong but can be distorted. You have to experience it as it happened . As a child I can remember the dog fights over London and seeing the Spits going down in flames, the German bombers' following or blowing up in the air. some of the crew bailing out. We witnessed the troops who was wounded coming home and walking or being wheeled around , my uncle was one and he spent many years after the war in and out of hospital while they tried to fix him up. In my opinion war should not be gloryfied but remembered with a sad heart as their reallly are no winner's only loser's

It's a disgrace that history books don't even mention about the wars in N. Africa and Italy. Lots of hard fighting happened there, yet I have never once seen a history book in school with more than a sentence or two dedicated to that theater. We are taught "Iwo Jima and Normandy." This is true for private International Schools outside the US (I studied at Int'l School of Panama) and I was taught extremely stupid US History. Spent more time on how we were horrible people for spreading small pox instead of stuff like the Founding Fathers or the World Wars...

sounds like you got a dose of what the rest of the world really thinks of the US, make no mistake you guys are hated everywhere, even here, and we're your biggest allies. i dont think you guys need to learn more about your glorified founding fathers, i mean i know more about american independance than i do about the treaty of union, its not the lack of american knowledge thats your problem, its the lack of acknowledgement of the rest of the planet in history and politics.

(i could explain more about this "hate" you guys get, but im going to refrain from anything political. also this post isnt necessarily directed at anyone here)

I love WWII history! Like Fabbrini, lots of other time periods, while interesting, do not hold the same facination that WWII does. My grandfather fought in the US Army Air Corps as a nose gunner in a B-24. I think that hearing about that and what he did is what first got me interested in WWII. That was about 10 years ago! Since then, every paper I have done has been on some aspect of WWII and I love just sitting down and reading a good book about what has been aptly described as the "greatest generation!"

Go for it YSD! I know I will enjoy reading whatever you put up.

Alright well...before we get too off-topic here, this is exactly the stuff I am wanting to avoid--being all of your concerns (not the discussion part lol. I like that). Therefore...I expect the three of you to contribute some stuff for my consideration in this whole project!

Yes, Pat, we need to know about more than just the major (US) battles.
Yes, Brain, I already referenced the American tunnel-vision of events. Of COURSE I will talk about things like D-Day, but...we sure as hell were not in that anywhere remotely near alone.
And yes, London, I referenced that as well. 99.99% of people are dumb to what all happened (and that's a lowball figure). I know a good deal about the subject but I am learning tons of new stuff every day I study it more. And I don't mean to glorify it--just to educate people and share the passion I have for it (much of it is stuff I disagree with and most are sad events--as you said, war isn't a "good" thing--but I am still fascinated by the history of these events). I most definitely want to hear from you and other sources you have on these events. Hell, half the people here don't even know what your screen name references, and those who do probably mostly know nothing more than bare basics.

You know what i found out about this post. Nothing in the world is ever going to be peaceful and we will eventually destroy our selves.

I'll help. I am relatively knowledgeable in history. If you have any topics you would like to give me to write stuff on, I'd be happy to.
