My computers mobo deceded to die on me after 5.6 years; it was due, so I'm now renting a super, super slow laptop to get by on and do some research on purchasing a junky, crappy mobo, cpu and ram to sustain me until I build a new super system in June.

Any mobo suggestions are greatly appreciated. I need the nforce chipset for my nvidia 8800 GTX. I am not bias on ATI, but I bought a new 8800 two years ago for $100.00. Couldn't pass it up. It will suffice now until I build a new system.

If your a computer builder, what are you using now and if you had any problems with it what were they and how did you solve them.

I'm tired of reading tons of reviews on newegg and amazon about the pros and cons of mobos and all the returns.

There has to be a good mobo out there somewhere without any problems or I guess its now a hit and miss situation when purchasing mobos.

What is your price range and local stores, please attack links and Ill give you an Idea or two.

Also tell me what else you do with your comp? And other than the 8800 your keeping what else will remain the same. If its the case.. then what board sizes work?

By the way you don't need an nforce chipset to run a nVidia graphics card. You only need it if you want to run SLI. (Even then the Intel x58 chipset and higher supports SLI, its only older intel chipsets that don't)

Go for a decent Gigabyte board. They almost never break and the customer service I've had from them have been excelent.

If you give me your processor I can recommend a few solid mobo's

Why do you need a nForce chipset? you only need nForce chipsets if you want to SLI on 775, or AMD. You say you only have a single 8800, so you could use any chipset that supports PCIe.

2. Which socket is your CPU? 775 i'm guessing?

I don't know anything about the whole nForce chipset thing, but I'd trust reflex's advice. If it does work out that you don't need it, then I would suggest looking at AMD. At the lower price ranges AMD tends to have better performance for the price. If you want some specifics on board selections, you'll also want to pick out a budget to narrow your focus.

ATX size boards will work.

I am using a PC Power & Cooling 510w. It says it peaks to 650 watts.
It has a 24 pin ATX connector and a 4 pin ATX Connector.

I'm using two 7200 sata II on raid 0 and 1 10,000 sata II all by itself.

Since my old board is an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe. AMD 939 socket and nForce 4 chip set. I use to run dual 7800 GTX's when I got my system. When one of the cards burned-out, I decided to purchase a 8800 GTX.

What I do with my computer. Well, like I said earlier, I am going to build a more powerful computer around June. So all I'm doing with my computer is gaming and web browsing.

I go on Newegg.com on a regular basis and read peoples reviews on motherboards. It seems all mobo's are bad and have problems.

All I just want is something to sustain me until June and to keep as a back-up if I have problems with my new system.

All I really want is either a Intel or AMD board, procesor and 2 gigs of ram. I will still be using windows xp pro. 1 PCI-E at 16x is all I need. I'm not going to be doing any SLI stuff.

Also, I would like the board to support a 4 pin ATX instead of the newer 8 pin ATX the newer boards offer. I'd hate to buy a new PSU. But if I have to, I will.

And it would be nice if it supported the PATA Drives. I'd hate to go out and buy another dvd drive when I have a dvd and cd that works fine but require an IDE socket.

If all else fails, I'll probably purchase a used Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe on ebaY and just replace my board with the same. I never had any problems with my board. I think when I was installing a cpu cooler, I may have static shocked the mobo. LOL. Perfect for the new year. Know I now this year will be a bad year for me. LOL! But I keep smiling.

I have nothing against Gigabyte. I've looked at all of them in Intel and AMD versions and also Biostar, Foxconn, Asus and MSI. Didn't look at EVGA yet.

Just tired of reading so many bad reviews on all of these boards.

I also want to say thanks to all of you who are taking time out of your gaming to help me with my mobo issues.

Your all good friends.

I've been using Gigabyte for a decade. Never had a problem with one.

They no longer sell new 939 boards.

You are going to have to look at eBay.

Or you could get a cheap AM3 CPU+board, that will perform better than anything 939.

Find something for under 100 bucks that beats my Opti 180. :P

I know theres isn't anything out there for a 939 cpu. I'm not looking to travel in the past, I'm just looking for newer alternatives. Thats why I'm posting on here and trying to get advice and model numbers.

The new AMD mobo's won't work with nvidia vid cards. AMD and ATI are putting a stop to that. Unless someone knows of an alternate mobo that will work with nvidia and amd together like the past.

Peace.

any Athlon II X2/X3/x4

Phenom II X2/x3

Any wolfdale based Pentium

Any Clarkdale based Pentium

Do i win?

lol those silly things don't win in floating point!

Funny enough though, I tested a 12 MB Yorkfield Core 2 Quad rendering a movie vs my Opti 180 and the Opti won...

First, ATI is no longer being used as a brand. It's just AMD. Second, I highly doubt they're doing that. It's a good way to make sure you stop selling processors if your GPUs can't keep up in the market. Now, if you're talking about AMD boards not working well for SLI, I can believe that. But that's something entirely different.

Now the new question is, can I purchase any type AMD mobo and still use my 8800 GTX on it. Not in SLI, but by itself?

If so, then it would be a lot easier to choose a cheaper board to sustain me until I do further research in building a more powerful system.

Well I read what all you asked for mr cigar & found a motherboard under $100 w/ free shipping (i always try to find as much stuff within the free shipping area as possible w/o any big time issues), so heres a motherboard that I feel that you will be confident with: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128394

Unfortunately, majority of motherboard that use the AMD cpu that have free shipping are ASUS (my last motherboard was ASUS & was not very happy w/ it). Havent had a single issue w/ my current motherboard (which is Gigabyte). Big thing is just trying to overclock the cpu (which is mostly memory-based issue).

Let us know if you want some help with another hardware item.

They will work with a single card, just no SLI

proof? I think that your C2Q is defective, or some other factor was at play.

you do not need nforce chipset for a singe card.

Any board that supports PCIe will support a single GPU

Thank you. Now that changs everything. Now I have more options.
