I've got a usb wd my book and i got it over a year maybe two but here is what i'm running into.

While at walmart i was looking at the tech stuff they had and i was going to get a normal hard drive from there but at the momment they didn't have one.

So i got a usb one instead because i was thinking it'd be easy to take around with me and i had cash on me, So i wasn't going to buy one online since i was there at the store.

What a mistake that was, now what i want to do is take this thing apart and take the normal hard drive out and use it inside my computer not on usb.

Now i know some of you will say "It'll void your warranty" But at this point i simply don't care, I just want the hardrive inside my computer without losing my stuff.

I would like to hear from you guys do you think it's safe?

Should i risk it and do it?, I mean i don't feel like losing my 500GB of my stuff.

Thank you.

I've done it earlier with a empty one, it worked. Not sure how it will go with a full one, but I don't see that it should be any different. All you need to be sure of is what kind of power supply aswell as data input plug is on it and that it matches you computer. Or you might sit with a harddrive without shell needing a direct 230V power. :)

I took my MY Book World NAS one apart and put it in my computer. The software was a total fail and tearing the case down won't effect the data.

just disassemble and stick the HD in your computer.
its not really a problem. ive done it on several while i worked as a computer tech.
the HD will show up as a normal spare drive and have all yer info.

Alright i did it and i put it in but window refuses to find it and it only works with the little usb thing "Thank god my stuff isn't gone."

So you have it inside your computer, but it still won't work without USB?

Well i used a sata cable and the power cable from my psu and it didn't work, I mean it powered up and in windows it said it was there and working but none of my data was there, I got scared and took it out and tryed the little chip thing with the usb and power on it and it works but sata won't work, I have no idea why.

Perhaps window hates my hard drive, I'm sure if i formated it then it would
It finds it in windows but i can't do that in this case.

But it installs this driver and nothing happens from there, It simple refuses to work, Maybe because i already have data on it.

I'm about to just buy a new 1TB Hard drive if this keeps up any longer.

I looked on the back of it and i don't have those on my pins and i don't have those on my main sata too.

Open disk management (right click "computer in start menu > manage > disk management) and activate the disk. no need to format.

Well, I decided to just mount the usb and power board back on it and i didn't put it back in it's case so it will just outside of the case just sitting on the side of my night stand.

I'll just wait till i can get a good deal on a sata 1TB or save up for one.

The whole usb to sata thing seemed to be simple but now i'm thinking "Wow i wish it was easy " But it's been nothing but a pain.

Thanks everyone who tried to help me.
