Server issues: my Vent

I cant seem to feel the lag... where is it? o.o...

On a serious stand point, it doesn't bother me at all, and if it gets fixed, its only a bonus for me.

I propose that leadership and the main posters (not me!) of this thread have a meeting in vent to discuss this thread/problem.

sm_unlag = win :)

please read through the thread before you post panzer. talking on ventrilo, unfortunately, will not bring any fixes. As has been montioned a good three times (at least) in this thread, DoDS leadership's hands are, for the time being, tied in this particular server problem.

not to say people shouldnt hop on ventrilo...

I have read through it...

If we get this clarified on vent, no one has to post in this thread 5 times daily. I know you cant solve the problem, but How about solving this thread/discussing? :)

Or maybe put up a sticky telling us that we shouldn't complain about server lag/crash. ;)

and as i said in my previous post (i think), its only the crashes that bother me :)

One thought (well ok a couple)

- this whole meandering through topics post is not such a bad thing.. always good to see where a discussion ends up and sometimes real good ideas pop up from the most unexpected places..
- hopefully our division leaders don't take any of this the wrong way, unfortunately some people would not understand that a snap decision can't be made, proper channels have to be worked through and also planning ahead to make sure the decision being made is actually the right one - nothing worse than thinking you are doing something to fix a problem and then finding out you made it worse!!

I would challenge anyone who thinks that things could be done better to try things from our DL's seat.. not a paid job, has to be done around personal commitments , still have to answer to council and also put requests to council.

When you think about the size of eGO and the technical challenges and also the cultural challenges (lots of different types of us all working towards the same path) the people calling the shots are doing a cracker job, and doing all of this purely on donations and voluntary time.

In saying that as long as people have that sort of perspective it is a good thing to raise questions and suggest possible fixes, as long as it is understood that what you suggest may not be feasible.. after all we could have dedicated servers with an oncall technician, i'm sure our provider would be willing to discuss this, but the cost?? Does not make it a bad idea, just unrealistic for how we operate.

As far as the whole Kalt sidetrack went - the same sort of thing. We all have things we would like to see done - some want kalt back, some don't, some want a rotation server, some don't. I'm sure it is not as easy as deciding one day "lets put this map on" and two minutes later it is done. Our DL's most likely have to answer to council for any decisions and as i mentioned above have to justify them - which takes more of their voluntary time! And if they make a hasty decision and we have something really unpopular in place of argentan what would the gain be? Lets give them a bit of time to decide what happens with that server and above all support them in the decision made.

We have multiple support requests in for the servers, but because of a general backlog, we can get stuck.

You don't realize that even if we did go ahead with a big server change request right now, it would need to be cleared by the right people and then implemented and troubleshooted. And you certainly don't realize that the ETA for support is entirely dependent on current backlog. It's no different from any IT department in the world, only this one is held back a little more by the fact that it's a VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION. Nobody here gets paid, and so it would be unreasonable to expect things to get done immediately, in all honesty. Everyone does the best we can.

This is more of a suggestion than anything, but maybe we could get more volunteer 'implementors'. The decision making hierarchy can stay the same, but the technical council or whatever 'rank' could be expanded in order to alleviate the bottleneck. I know that there are more than enough capable computer people involved in eGO that would volunteer time to troubleshoot these issues (including myself). Just an idea to pass up the admin tree.

Nosh

One thought just struck me.. apart from people who are gonna hate me for bumping this when it was dying a quiet death!!

We have some people who have various possibly underutilized talents - if we ever have a marketing team for our division i nominate deathkeeper - through sheer luck or skill (will we ever know??) he managed to create the right mix of wording for the thread heading to make people think "gotta read this"!! the content did go a bit astray with further postings but the whole point is people did keep checking and reading, just look at the numbers!

Deathkeeper = email marketing magician :)

Haha. I know a few people who do that rather regularly ;)

This thread reminded me of my wifes family you could talk about the weather and within a space of a few minutes you would have touched at least 6-8 different subjects, my wife and daughter are the same, I cant keep up with the turn of subjects. Life gets very complicated, but interesting. It good to see so many members joining in.

My family is the same way.

My goal was to get more views then the realism handbook sticky.... we didn't quite reach it though... 10 pages is good

Wewo, you're so silly, it takes 10 to get to the next page, not 5.

Well, no need to keep bumping this thread. Some plugins have been re-arranged / removed on the servers. That along with box restarts and the servers seem to be running fairly smooth. If any of the servers are doing just terrible, PM on here or on vent.

Thread.......CLOSED!
