Modular PSUs aren't bad. PC Power & Cooler put out that crap, and at the time, sure, modular wasn't that great. But the technology has changed. Some of the best PSUs right now are modular (looking at the Seasonic X series, and it's derivatives).
PSU calculators, especially ones from a company that sells them (Newegg or Antec, even) are way off. They tell you that a system that pulls maybe 400W will need a 750W+ unit. Those aren't too reliable. There is one good one, but I forgot the link.
850W is plenty, actually. And Corsair isn't the only good PSU manufacturer.

I agree, The highest end stuff is probably not bad, but modulars run the risk of shorting, poor connection, etc. Especially with the mid-lower level PSU's. Like the one he said he had, it does not matter, he already owns it, I thought he was looking to purchase one.
IMO when it comes to modularity, Its just unnecessary as this is not a part your going to be removing every week, therefore modularity is somewhat of a gimmick, good wire management in a decent case, will do just as well, if not better. I guess if you have a "show" computer it factors in.
Short of pulling up every single model number of every part in his unit, every single PSU calculater could be considered off. So my advice, try 3-4 different ones, chances are they will all be around the same. I personally use the corsair one, its seems to be somewhat realistic and actually more conservative than most.
There is a lot of good PSU manufacturers, I'm just stating some of the more popular and accessible ones.
The bottom line is, clean, reliable power. Given a choice between Antec, Corsair, Seasonic and Thermaltake. My choice would clearly be seasonic, corsair,antec and thermaltake in that order. Oddly enough, thats about the order of cost too. I'm no fanboy of any of them, I just like value for my money and a good warranty helps too.
BTW- Efficiency is the ratio between the useful output of an energy conversion device and the input.*For example, if your computer uses 300W, but pulls 400W from the wall, then the efficiency is 300W/400W, or 75%.
Its not really complicated, the higher the better.
