BTW I did browse through your pc build guide and I agreed with pretty much everything you wrote, I didn't read it all, but what I saw was solid stuff for a greenhorn to get to speed pretty quick. Was that a corsair psu I saw there? cough cough lol.

And yes, everyone should take 10 mins and test their system out on a box first, it will save them a lot of grief later.

No, in general, modular PSUs are fine. Modular PSUs aren't a gimmick. If you have a smaller case, and you don't need the octopus of cables that every non-modular PSU comes with, then it will restrict airflow, and just look bad. lol.

I have my own method of calculating the rough power consumption of a rig. It's mostly accurate.

I would agree, except I wouldn't go with anything but Seasonic. I am a fanboy of them, I won't deny it. lol.

Yes, it was. That is pretty much the best super cheap PSU. I got it for like $35. Why not? lol.

I know a few people that don't do that. They were confused when I told them to set it up out of the case at first.

I'm a fanboy of anything of quality that is on sale.
Actually there is quite a number of lesser known but well made PSU units, Sparkle, Enhance, Enermax, Fortron, any number of these can be great, but sometimes it varies greatly between models, with Antec, Seasonic and Corsair, being notable exceptions, pretty much all their stuff is good, some better than others, but all rather good. I think some of Corsairs units are rebranded seasonics or so the rumor goes.

Modular PSUs aren't bad. PC Power & Cooler put out that crap, and at the time, sure, modular wasn't that great. But the technology has changed. Some of the best PSUs right now are modular (looking at the Seasonic X series, and it's derivatives).

PSU calculators, especially ones from a company that sells them (Newegg or Antec, even) are way off. They tell you that a system that pulls maybe 400W will need a 750W+ unit. Those aren't too reliable. There is one good one, but I forgot the link.

850W is plenty, actually. And Corsair isn't the only good PSU manufacturer. :P *cough* fan boy! *cough*

Oh by the way Seasonic makes Corsair products....Corsair doesn't make much these days, they just rebrand high end stuff.

Seasonic barely makes any Corsair stuff anymore.

THe TX650 (v1 only, V2 is PSHII), HX750, HD850 (AX 750 might be SS too, but i don't remember) are the only seasonic rebrands anymore. Most of their stuff is CWT, now. :(

Or in the case of the AX1200, Flextronics

I'm not sure why, but they seem to be phasing out Seasonic, and replacing it with CTW PSH II (meh), or DSAII (even worse) kinda sad really.

Corsair never made anything. They've always rebranded everything, and marked up the price.

AX750 and AX850 are based on the Seasonic X platform, IIRC.

Because they've established a brand name, now they can relax with producing high quality units, but still sell them at a high end price.
 
It sucks, they are going the way of PCP&C or OCZ. They used to be good, but they are starting to slip.

I'm sure they do profit off of them, but its kinda odd that almost all the Corsair stuff is cheaper than the Seasonic brands of the same wattage, they must be giving Corsair the overruns or who know what, at some deep discounts.
 
That Seasonic has split 12v rails...while Corsair has 1 12v rail.

Anyways I find that Seasonic was usually more expensive than Corsair.
 
I was just about to point that out myself.
Clearly in this instance this is not the same unit, not even close.

As the Corsair is rated for 52 amps,
+12V@52A

Compared to the Seasonic's 48A @
+12V1@24A, +12V2@24A on a split rail.

Not that it matters much, but with the rebate, the corsair is still cheaper.
I rarely see Seasonics offer any rebates or discounts.

BTW The Corsair also has the better warranty. 7 yrs vs 5 yrs.

If I was buying a PSU and it was between these two. The Corsair in this instance is actually my first choice. Due to price, design, power and warranty. I have a feeling, that Seasonic probably has a contract to makes certain models, that are special and specific to Corsair to keep them from competing directly against them.

Look at this comparison.. I just picked the lowest priced SS and Cor Brands and did a comparison. SS appears to be the more expensive consistently and usually at less watts/amps

The M12 is mislabed it is actually a single rail, but they wanted to meat ATX spec, so they labeled it as a 2 rail PSU.

None of the units on the corsair side are Seasonic based, all of them are DSAII (i think. They are CWT for certain though). I was comparing units based on the same exact platform. The HX650 is a M12II, but with a different sicker, and slightly lower effiency, but 30w extra.

the only thing that the Corsair has is an extra 2 yrs warranty, and different cable arragement.
 
Okay, so I didn't really read this whole thread. I have a question about something somebody said on page 1 that I've heard many a time. "Wattage doesn't matter, amperage does." watts/volts = amps. So a PSU that can output 400W on the 12V rail will always have more 12V amps than a PSU that can only do 300W on the 12V rail.

I just never really understood that saying. (I do know that a high quality 450W PSU is often better than a crappy 500W PSU though).

The bottom line is this.
You are looking for clean, steady power, without a lot of fluctuation or ripples.

This is why you should for the most part ignore most cheap PSU wattage labels all your looking for is enough amps on the 12v line to power your components,

btw 40 amps usually suffices for most needs.

Instead, you really should read the reviews and the detailed specs, I've seen a lot of 400 watt power supplies that only have like 14 amps on a +12v line.

That's not totally accurate with cheaper PSU's as they are adding up the -5, the +3.3v and the .5v lines. I've noticed a trend with cheaper PSU's they will state so many watts, but then you see half the power is actually going to the 3.3 and 5v leads! so your whiz bang inc. $18 600 watt PSU is actually only putting out 300 usable watts and weighs less than can of soda and probably the reason people are getting a lot of lockups and freezes and reboots during gaming.

That's the exact same equation I posted in a different form. Just divide both sides by the voltage.


My point is that comparing wattage and amperage is the same thing as long as you are comparing it on the same voltage rails.

The reason you probably heard that is if you just look at the watts and not look at the details as to what rails the amps are coming from, its useless info.

The general rule was we want 16 amps min on each 12v rail with at least 2 rails.
Nowadays with our power hungry video cards and 6 fans, we really want more like 24.
 
I thought it was the TX series that was seasonic?

The TX650 used to be S12 based (seasonic), but the TX650 "v1.5" was changed to PSHII

The original TX750 was PSH based, but the TX "v1.5" was also changed to PSHII

PSHII has much worse build quality than S12, or PSH, but it performs slightly better.

What really burns me, is that they changed the internals without indicating so on the package or labels. It looks exactly the same, but if you look closely at the sticker, they added 1 number to the end of the model number (again, this is not indicated on the box). They also did not send out review samples to any site, and refuse to do so to this day.

To attempt to rectify this, they released the TX750/650 "v2", which i believe are still based on PSHII, and they sent out review samples and changed the package/labels.

Don't even get me started on the debacle with the new CX series. ugh, those things are a whole other 'crap' storm.
 
That would probably explain why my Tx650 at this very moment is sitting in a RMA department in California and due back on the 13th. I honestly do not know what version it is as I did not check. But I will take notice when I get it back.
