Valve Maps Server

First I haven't posted in the servers since the changes to the forum so I hope this is in the right spot.

But anywhooo, I've noticed, as I'm sure many of you have also, that the valve maps server is always either completely empty or populated by one or two idlers. Back when we only had the few servers on DoD we always made sure that at least a few players where playing in a server.

I know when you get off from a long day of school, work, college, whatever you just want to unwind and get some frags ASAP. But I think its just sad that our valve maps server is empty almost 24/7. So I was hoping that if everyone could pledge to go into an empty server and hang around at least until more people join then that would be awesome. I know I'm not an admin or anything like that but I've been here for along time and I know were capable of doing this.

TL;DR

Go to the Valve Maps Server, or any other empty server and hang around until more people join.

Thank You,

Contact your friends and get them to join you and help you out, the pathfinders may also be able to help out too.

I spent an hour in Valve Maps by myself the other day, and not one person joined. I was so sad...all of my TF2 friends were playing Portal 2 so nobody was around to help me out. :x We need the TF2 Pathfinders.

[Edit] Oh, and I'm not sure if it's just our server that's not very popular. I went under the world server search the other day and only about 3 out of the hundreds of servers listed had anybody playing on Badlands, Dustbowl or Goldrush. Do people just not like the old maps anymore?

I'm always down to help fill that server, it would be nice to have it full on a regular basis.

This is where bots come in. That's what most of the bigger PL servers do (e.g. Lotus Clan, etc).

I'm not going to lie - there's no way I'm going to join an empty server and wait around for it to fill up, which could take several hours. I know there are some with that kind of time and that's cool, but I just can't do it.

Woohoo, we had about 12 people not that long ago! We're making some progress. :D

I think a combination of the maps and the server settings are to blame.

  • Valve Maps - People either love them or hate them. I really can't stand about half of them.
  • No Crits - I personally love having nocrits on, but some people can't live without them.
  • No Bullet Spread - I hate this. I really do. Makes certain weapons way more powerful than they should be.

So let's do the math...

So assuming 1/4 of the players in the world hate nocrits and 1/4 of those remaining hate no bullet spread and 1/4 of those remaining hate a specific map...

That leaves about 40% of the possible players in the world who will actually want to play on the server if they like all the rules and maps.

...interesting statistics are interesting. A full quarter of ALL tf2 players hate no-crits? I call shenanigans.

Well from what i gather eGO is creating this, which could help fill our servers:
Team Fortress 2 leadership has come to recognize that our servers fill when our members are playing on the servers. Fancy that. With recent server changes, some servers are filling faster than others. It is our intention that no server be left behind. In light of this, we are creating a new team, who's focus will be on improving server ranking and recruiting.

Introducing the Pathfinders.

The Pathfinders will be an elite team, specially trained to improve the above metrics. There are 30 positions available:

6 eGOs from TF2
18 eGs from TF2
6 PSC members (any division and rank)

We will need coverage in a variety of timezones. Dedicated members please apply with a PM to vudu.

Today we had it completely full for a few hours, and it only took about 4 of us joining and playing a few rounds before a surge of pubs filled it up. It only takes a few minutes, guys, so if you see that the server has 2/24 players or something just hop in and stick around.

I missed the clan-wide meeting. Was anything said about these Pathfinders?

The idea of Pathfinders notwithstanding, it doesn't take much to get this going. Yesterday, I came across the OP, decided to honor the request, and went to the Valve Maps server. Moments later, Admiral came in, we started smacking each other for a bit, and soon others filtered into the server. By the time I had to leave, I think we had about 12 people in total (Frisky could verify this; he was there).

Basic point: it doesn't take anyone with a title to get things going in any of our quieter servers. All it takes is initiative. Believe me, I understand the idea of not wanting to wait around in a server on one's own, waiting for others to arrive. However, I regard it of inestimable value to support these servers for the benefit not only of eGO but for all those people who look at the countless vacant TF2 servers they like and think, "If only someone were there to play with me..."

glad to see i'm not the only one who's noticed this. I had no idea the crits were gone when I play on the valve maps server. xP I also do agree that maybe cutting out a few of the less popular maps would be a good idea. Seems like whenever the map changes half the people leave because they don't like the voted for map, then more leave because other people left.

@Caelestis: thanks for the effort I would have been playing for longer but my laptop overheated and shut itself off. xD But yeah that was great it really does only take the initiative.

:EDIT: I really need to change my sig, the Kettle doesn't even exist anymore and im not an eG now either. lol

ol

There should be a RTV command if I'm not mistaken on that server, there is no need to remove some of the maps.
