Hey Edgegamers,

I have been having this problem for quite a while now, and it has hindered my ability to play (or atleast enjoy) alot of my favorite games.

I have an nVidia GeForce 9800GT XFX graphics card.

I currently have the driver installed that comes with the disk, because whenever I try to install the most up to date driver and restart my computer, my Operating System will not load.

I have Windows XP, ( Yes, yes, I know I should get a new one) and after downloading the driver and restarting my computer, Windows will not load, being stuck in a black screen after the XP loading screen.

I am wondering if there are any others in the same boat as myself, or hopefully have managed to resolve this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated guys!

Thanks.

I am a noob, but...

Are you downloading the correct driver version? ie. the one for Windows XP?

Have you tried starting Windows in Safe Mode?

Restart (or turn on) your computer, before Windows loads, press "F8".

If there is a screen with options, choose either "Safe Mode" or
"Safe Mode with Networking".

Reply with results (such as if you can see the screen with options or not and
what happens afterward).

EDIT: If it works, we're not done yet, this is simply a step.

@iEye Yessir, I am downloading the windows XP driver. :)

@Mr.Game After I have downloaded the driver, I can go on safe mode and with networking just fine, but every time I try to start up regularly, I can't. The only way I can get my computer to start up is by reverting to the last settings that worked.

If you can access your computer, you may have to un-install the current
drivers entirely, then install the drivers from the nVidia website.

Moved to Tech Help.

Edit for CubanCarlos: No worries. It happens.

I apologize for not putting the thread in the correct section.

I tried to delete any nvidia files, and then download the driver, but no luck.

It just goes to a black screen after the windows load screen, and the only way to
be able to bypass that is simply reverting to the last known settings that work, which just deletes the installed driver.

Have u tried under safe mode to revert back to the previous driver? Its under the device manager area. Thats the only thing I can think of to do.

Have you tried refreshing your resources?

Take apart your chassis, touch the metal part with both hands, unplug the voltage cord to the pc, unplug the monitor cord to the video card, unscrew, if there's a screw applied, gently lift up the video card, blow off any dust on the communicator and the video card, if applicable, try inserting your video card to a different slot, if not, re-insert it and use it like normal, when Windows detects a new hardware device and wants to install it automatically, hit "No." or "Cancel.", install the drivers from the website.

I've read all the responses so far and the only solution I can think for you right now is to upgragde your windows. XP is falling downhill with everything as most things nowadays are getting bumped up to vista/7. Hope this helps, and maybe this might solve your problem.

This is most likely going to be the best fix.

I'll see what I can do to get my father into buying me (And himself, he uses XP) a new version of Windows.

Which version would you all recommend? Vista or 7

By the ways, thanks for all the help guys!

Vista? *LOL* Windows 7 is better than Vista. I was a XP user, and avoided jumping onto Vista because of all the issues it had at its release initially. I know that the service packs and patches made Vista a lot better, but save yourself the grief and go straight to Windows 7, if you can't wait for Windows 8 (ETA 2012 or 2013)

Haha, thanks Snipeye.

Now that I remember, my sister has Windows 7, and I believe she still has the box, so I can install it on my computer aswell.

If not, Windows 7 is a necessary investment and I will need to get it if I want to be able to play anything.

Thanks again guys, you all rock!

Another thing to know...

If you or a family member has a student email (a .edu address), you get
a huge discount on Windows OS and Microsoft software.
Go here: LINK

Example: My friend has a [email protected] email...
When back-to-school sales started, he was able to buy Windows 7 (I
think it was Premium) for only $60 about a year ago.

EDIT: Some wording was wrong.
