wow! easy...

its

(3.81520424476945831628649898809*10^29)^(1/31)

Run that by WolframAlpha if you don't believe me.

Same so the answer would be 9

6?2(1+2)=?

(1+2) = (3)

6?2 = 3

3(3) or 3x3 = 9

However. Technically is more like:

1. Parentheses
2. Exponents
3. Multiplication/Division
4. Addition/Subtraction

For 3 and 4, it is whatever comes first.

6/2(1+2)
6/2(3)

Now the parentheses are taken care of because 2x3 does not technically count as part of the parentheses step.

Division comes first, so you divide.

3(3)

Simplify.

9

The answer is 9. 6?2=3 and 2+1=3 and when it comes out to be 3(3) then you will do 3x3 and you get 9. Simple math.

These questions have been around the internet. It's basically the in the way the division symbol is used that trips people up. Even math programs interpret it as the wrong answer, so it's bad formatting.

I saw this on /b/ before. (Oh god)

I'm pretty sure there was 2 ways to solve this problem, it can be 9 or 1 depending on how you look at it. Here's a picture to help you folks out.

Remember, that line over the two numbers still mean division.

It's PEMDAS:

First its the parantheses: 1+2=3
then its multiplication/division and go by the order from left to right:
6/2 x 3
so basically: 3 x 3 = 9

This thread should be renamed..

"How many posts will it take before people realize all the other posts above say the same thing?"

Oh and..

9.

The answer is cake.
No, but seriously. It's 9.

Depends on what math book you learned from :P

I think no matter what the parenthesis should be eliminated first, but if you just add the 1 and 2 and then go from left to right you get 9. However, you could also use the distributive property, which results in 1.

IMO, all this proves is that without specifically stating the rules/syntax, text editors are inefficient means of showing math problems haha.
But the distributive property does not actually result in 1, because the coefficient is 6/2, not 2. (ASIDE: That would be written as 6?[2(1+2)]) It's the same as 6*(1+2)/2 which results in (6+12)/2 -->18/2 which is 9.
Also, because the coefficient is 6/2, it could be used as 3(1+2) which is 3+6 which is also 9.

While the text editor was a problem, in that that's a really weird way at looking at the fraction six over 2, it can still only be correctly read one way.

I say 1 personally, however it is just truly a horribly written equation and is to ambiguous
