Helpful tips for people who want to get better at CS:S

Ok so before I start I want to point out that I am not THAT good at this game. In fact, I'm not even on the scrim team and never heard of CAL or EASN or whatever its called =P HOWEVER, that does not mean that I can't dominate in the Pubs, specifically on DUST2. The small recommendations I put here are only really applicable in non-scrim servers and places where you can just have fun owning noobs =)

I know there are those of you who know your not as good as some of these guys that seem to get a headshot every kill or go on 8 kill streaks and such. Those kind of players are the types you see in scrims: they are very good with their hand/eye coordination and know a lot of the mechanics of the game. What I will try and focus on is the Game Sense; that is, using all the resources you have at your disposal to have a general awareness of what is going on around you so that you are able to level the playing field against much better players.

To recant, I know I'm not as good as most of our scrim team in terms of aiming at heads and all that, but I can even the playing field with game knowledge.

1. Radar is complete hacks:
It tells you where your whole team is, shows the layout of the map, shows where a teammate dies and when your teammate sees an enemy, it shows it on your radar. USE THE RADAR. I look at least every 5 seconds, just so Im on top of knowing where everyone is and where the team needs backup.

2. Use the tab button
I check this probably every 15 seconds just so I see how many players are left on each side. With this knowledge, you can tell how many players are left on each side and how many "good" players there are. USE this knowledge! Coupled with the radar you have a vast amount of info!

3 In Application
Dust2, 12 on 12. Your a CT at B and you hear someone screaming "OMG LONG! HELP!" You see on your top right hand side that Hand of Fate, the only really good T on the "T" team at the moment, has just killed two guys over at long. You check the tab and see that there are 7 Ts left, and they got long. You already know there's a Guy in Tunnel and you also heard someone say "OMG SHORT TOO!". You can quickly surmise that there is probably at least two Ts at long, at least 1 at short, and at least 1 in tunnel. that leaves the possibility that AT TOPS there would be 3 Ts in middle if you were to go that way.

Using Radar, the tab feature, and seeing who is killing who in the top right provide great knowledge that can make it seem like your almost Wall Hacking (probably why Lady Death and KO still rag on me =P ).

Hopefully this helps some of you who underestimate the use of the radar and tab feature. I know it is all very basic and general but do try to think about it during the game: How many of them are left? Which ones are left? Where can I make a move that will change the game? This all might be way to overboard to you for a pub, but this is for those of you who want to try to genuinely get better at the game while still working on your mechanics. The Pubs are a blast to play on and you can see them as basic preparation for the Scrim Team if that's what your aspiring to.

I disagree completely with RNA, lol. If your a T and you go where your team doesnt, that auto weakens the main push exponentially. and RNA knows that I lead those just about everytime if BruceLee or Conflict isnt. lol

Get a Mic!
Typing takes too long. And don't spam it, hard to hear foot steps when you're talking.

Footsteps
When you hear footsteps and don't see a teammate on radar be prepared to slay enemy.
Also learn what footsteps sound like on different textures.

Acquire a Headset!
You can hear so much better with one, imho.

Don't rush unless it's the objective!
You might get a kill but you'll probably get killed, also.

Bait Merc
Let Merc take enemy health down then you can go in a mop up.

Don't rush double doors @ long if Katy Perry is online!
He camps on other side.

Call a rush before you die!
Chances are you are dead but atleast give your teammates warning.

Don't pray and spray!
Use burst fire(unless you know how to ignore crosshair and focus on where bullets are landing). 3 shots for M4 2 shots for AK.

Aim for the Head!
Get in a habit of aiming for the head and it'll come natural.

Slow down that Mouse!
Gradually slow your mouse speed down. Better for accuracy. Do a google search for how to optimize your mouse for CS:S. You'll have to disable things in Windows Mouse properties. Worth it though. Will give you a more consistent experience.

Fancy graphics are for the birds!
Get rid of everything you can. Max performance!

What's FPS?
Is your FPS under 40? That's no good, try to get it and limit it to 100.

Running with Knife out is for the birds!
Stay locked and loaded at all times. You don't run any faster with your knife out than you do with your pistol out.

crosshairsize?
I like a smaller crosshair. I use cl_crosshairsize 2(dunno what that is in crosshairscale)

Nades!
Don't use your nades at the beginning of the round! They are more efficiently used when thrown at shot up enemies.

Out of Flash Bangs?
Try throwing a smoke grenade in the stead of a flash bang. Hopefully the enemy will think it's a flash and look away, then you get a kill!

Don't vs me on highschool server!
I will leave you lovingly bruised and battered.

Why ?

1) Notice That if your team call a B rush, 80% Will camp mid and 20% Will Die

2) Bruce is more spawn camper than a leader, easy to lead with conflict, Merc, snowie etc..

3) if your team rush B, Cts Will tell it with mic so short is 99% open

4) anyway just do like me take your scout and get headshots

Hey all, just thought I would give my two cents even though they have already been touched on, I'll just reiterate.

1. Headset - Able to clearly hear footsteps allowing you to set up an ambush. Example HS: Sitting in West connect with crosshair at head height, T comes running down West hall and boom hs.

2. Radar - Again, check constantly to see where teammates are dying and where the enemy is sighted. Can also use radar to blindfire through smoke. Just look where the dots are and fire in that general direction, I do it all the time in HS West Hall when Ts rush with smoke.

3. Burst Fire and Aim - Always burst fire and aim for the head. Sounds obvious but everyone does it including me where you panic when you see multiple enemies and just spray and pray. Always aim head height

4. Positioning - Another obvious tip but people still do it. Never just stand out in the open. Get behind something. Take a peek then get back in cover. Also always aim head height and be ready to shoot so you can pull off a quick burst if you see an enemy and can then quickly get behind cover.

5. Experience - You will learn a lot of these things through trial and error and with time. I have been playing since counter strike was first released as a mod for hl.

6. Other Tips
- Don't leave the bomb if its down, stay and protect it, the Ts will come to it.
- Constantly check the scoreboard(TAB) to see how many are left, so many times there will be 1 left attacking bombsite A and the ct there is calling for help and 5 cts are sitting in bombsite B, get a clue and go A.
- Lastly, try specing someone who knows what they are doing and spec them to gain some tips. I did it when I would see Fathom on back in the day when I was rusty after a 1 year break. Not sure where he ran off to, haven't seen him in forever.

There's no way to really improve the recoil of a gun without hacking BUT there is a way to compensate for it.

This is what I would suggest doing.

Create a server with no bots in it and buy your favorite weapon. Now stand away from a wall from a relative distance. Fire at the wall without moving the mouse at all. You will probably notice that the recoil goes up, to the right, and to the left. Knowing this you can now practice controlling your spray by moving your mouse down, to the left, and to the right. This will give you a tighter bullet pattern when you're spraying.

Just remember, it's all about the bullet holes when you're spraying. Don't look at your cross-hair because it's lying.

Another few tips to help you guys while playing CS:S.

First go into Options and click the Keyboard tab and then click Advanced and select "Fast Weapon Switching." This will allow you to just press buttons 1-2-3-5 without having to click Left Mouse to actually select the weapon. It will not work on your grenades however.

To fix grenades, (assuming you have mouse4 and mouse5 buttons) then open up your Console menu and type in these commands:

bind "mouse5" "use weapon_hegrenade"
bind "mouse4" "use weapon_flashbang"

This will allow you to click your mouse4 or mouse5 button to select your grenade or flashbang.

Also, under Options I would change my MIC hotkey to mouse3, that way you can click in on your mousewheel to use your mic instead of hitting K or whatever the default is.

And lastly, I would learn how to bunny hop. Even if you never master the technique it is still good to know the basics, especially about Air Strafing. Air strafing is extremely easy, all you have to do is run forward, jump, quit holding the W key, and press either A or D while in mid-air to strafe left or right. Learning how to air strafe is the basics of bunny hopping and will allow you to navigate the map a lot easier.

***Important air strafing fact***
It is extremely hard to use the spacebar while trying to air strafe(for me anyways), so I'd recommend binding your mousewheel scroll to jumping. In console type these commands:

bind mwheelup "+jump"
bind mwheeldown "+jump"

I've been trying to learn how to bhop using mouse scroll to jump but it's extremely hard to get used to. Since whenever a situation calls for me to jump I instinctively press space bar, very confusing. So space bar shouldn't be that hard to use as long as you can get the timing right perfectly.

ps; Is there any way to bind 2 keys to the same function?
