I am in the DoD:S Division, but I had played TF2 shortly after it came out for a while. I may want to try again. Can someone explain what this new system of upgrading and buying items is all about and how it affects the game? More specifically, what do I have to do to get better weapons? Does the Hat or other items do anything other than look weird? Any help will be appreciated:)

Achievements --> Different (not necessarily better) weapons
Hats --> Make you look awesome
Paint --> ^^
Random drops --> Weapons/hats

Basically it's a fun shooter where you can find stuff that fits your style, but you can still use the stock weapons and play just fine.

The new weapons really are not better than the original ones, they just have different effects. You can learn to craft to get metal or weapons or hats as well as random drops give you weapons, paint and hats or other items.

like they said you can find the other weapons or trade for them or just craft them yourself. usualy its easier to trade cause they are pretty cheap. there are a few weapons that are better then the older ones but most of them arent rly. just check tf2 wiki for all details what the weapons do.
the hats dont do much ingame. there are 4 set hats i believe that give you a bonus when you wear them including the set weapons. if that bonus fits your gameplay your lucky but most ppl dont care about that. besides those sets hats dont do anything except making you look good.

Right, like they've said.

To get new weapons:
Randomly found (there's formulas for the drop limit, but I can't remember)
Buy from Mann Co. Store (for USD)
Craft using other found weapons

As for hats, I don't really know. :P

Once you start playing it you'll start to get it, its one of those play and learn sort of deals. After like the third or fourth day something will click in your head and go "oh." :]

Most classes play just fine with stock weapons. You can play around with the different unlocks and see what you like. Most of these (non-vintage) can be had pretty much for free is you ask.

Going in order, I'd probably recommend:
Scout: Stock Weapons
Soldier: The Equalizer is nice (when you take a lot of damage your speed increases)
Pyro: The Axtenguisher (light someone up, axe them for insta-kill)
Demo Stock Weapons
Heavy: Sandwich (portable health kit for you or your medic)
Engineer: Stock Weapons
Medic: For me, this character is in most need of unlock weapons: the kritzkrieg for defense and the Ubersaw are must haves.
Sniper: Opinions vary on this. Stock weapons are ok. I like Jarate + Bushwacka, some like the Razorback (blocks spy backstab) or there's the Danger Sheild (+25 health).

That doesn't mean you won't have fun playing around with most of the weapons. The Demo Highlander + Charging Targe makes playing the Demo a whole 'nother experience. The Gunslinger helps the engineer be a more mobile class for fast-moving offensive lines. The Sandman can stop an ubered medic in his tracks.

If you don't have a large selection of unlock weapons, when you're in-game feel free to politely ask if anyone has any spares to...spare. Usually someone will donate a weapon or two for a new player

thanks, u guys may see me some time this weekend. Dare I ask which server is the best?

Ask me anything, I am like the king of knowledge and skill in tf2!

Some of the unlocks are just downright better than the originals.

Equalizer, Degreaser, Wrangler, Bushwhacka, just to name a few.

But it won't matter when you first get into it, anyway.
