Gaming rig

eh I wont be sending it back for a feature I wont be using :P plus the cpu I purchased just went on sale for $15 less than what i paid for (same goes for the OS I bought $20 off), just waiting on newegg to get back to me about website credit or cash back as I was told they would honor purchases with price drops within a week or so. Also, I would rather not take the cpu out of the motherboard >_>

Literally just went through the same thing, ordered my i5 and it went down 15 bucks. Call them, they refunded me

well I got refunded for the OS but not the cpu yet... guess the customer support rep I was typing to missed the item # for the CPU lol. May try again later :P

So with the i5 2500k a raedon 6950 and eigh gbs of ram what would my fps look like on like bc2

These people and their SSD's and RAID's. Don't waste your money on that. Like someone said on this thread, if you want the security of RAID just put your important files and docs on a separate storage drive and your os on a seperate boot drive. So that if something were to happen, you can format and reinstall your os without putting your files at risk. Who needs 3-5 HDD's and 3TB of memory

Sheesh, for 1.2k you should be able to build a rig to run ANY game completely maxed out... the 2500 is a bad buy when you can go for the 2500k for 10 dollars more. Even still, I don't understand why you would pay 220 dollars for a CPU that makes your build impossible to upgrade in the future. The 1100T completely obliterates all i5's and are compromable to i7's, and still cheaper than the 2500

a monitor is not something you should buy right away. You can always recycle your old one, and get a newer one down the road. Id put the extra $300 in your system, specifically your Video card, as this will be the thing powering your gaming graphics, Bf3 will be a power hungry game.

My point exactly, it isnt really necessary especially when you're on a tight budget, but if you have the extra $200 buy one.

I have a Western Digital Caviar black 1tb, and it is amazing. The difference isnt really astronomical, what is a good 30 or 40 seconds wait? I doubt you will run multiple apps on startup, if its a gaming machine, put the majority of your budget in the video card

I spent about $1500 on my machine, including windows 7. Excluding my monitor, which I got later down the road.

PM me if you want the specs. And or need help with anything such as picking out parts.

:)

What? While I might agree that, for gaming, an 1100T would be enough and a 955BE even better, saying that Thuban dominates a Sandy Bridge quad-core is ludicrous. Please post all tests, reviews, and benchmarks that you can. I really really want to see this "completely obliterates" that absolutely nobody else anywhere on the interwebs has been able to measure.

I have a sandybridge i5 2500k, and it is beast. VERY Cool temps, after overclock. I also have the Zalman 9700 CPU cooler, its like 40 bucks. After intel's new sandybrige came out, they are now ahead of AMD. IMO..

It's not an opinion, it is a fact. As to whether they stay ahead when AMD releases Bulldozer is another thing. I personally hope AMD pulls ahead, and I am very much so considering a BD rig.

Perfect timing for BF3 phobus. :P Give me ur old computer haha

Yeah, I'm hoping lol. It really depends on how it performs. If it's close to SB in performance and the FX-8150 (or lower end 8 core, lol low end 8 core) is ~$200, then I'll probably get one of those. Else I think I'll build a SB rig.

Lets start with the SSD.

It's not necessary. However, once you use one, you'll never want to have another computer without one. They make your system much more responsive than a regular HDD ever could, and you cannot tell me that at $1200, you can't find a way to squeeze in a 60GB SSD (around $120). They're worth their cost for what they do to your system. My dinky Phenom II quad core when combined with an SSD makes my computer feel like the fastest, most seamless system in the world. I never have to wait for programs to launch or load. It's so fast it was frightening at first. I mean, I don't have time to make myself a cup of coffee anymore because my system starts up so quickly.

So the argument for an SSD is this. It's not a crucial component. However, it will make any modern system feel 10x as fast compared to the same system without an SSD. For that reason alone, they're worth their money.

Next, the CPU. Where did you get this notion that an 1100T "completely obliterates" any i5 CPU's? Last I checked, the i5 2500(k) is a superior product, both in comparable price and performance for virtually all areas of computer performance.

There's a lot more instances where the i5 2500K wins, but lets look at gaming too.

Are you starting to see the picture here? The 1100T is an inferior product to the Sandy Bridge Quad cores. It's not even a question of when or where. It just is. I want AMD to succeed so much that it hurts (still counting down the days to Bulldozer's release), but their 6-core CPU's are just no match for Intel's current Sandy Bridge quad cores.

Why would anyone at this point pay for a 980X :) I have a 2500K at 4.8 Ghz and it destroys any 980X. For just over 200 bucks. I hope Sandybridge-E is aver more overclockable (if possible)

Im at 3.7ghz, and I went up to 4.0 but I didnt see much difference.. Plus all that heat can shorten your CPU life man.

Actually, it can take the heat. It's the voltage you need to be wary of. But, the voltage causes the heat.

If you're going to discuss only HDDs, put it in a new thread. Otherwise, it's not relevant to helping Muffinz original request on building a new gaming rig. Keep it on topic, or make a new one, else I'll have to start cleaning the thread up.

So you're going to use these COMPLETELY USELESS benchmarks to compare these two CPU's? Really, MPEG video coding? Photoshop CS4? Why don't you show us the real benchmarks that actually mean something "mr. intel fanboi 4 lif3"

*lots of pics*

And there's so many more... must I go on? I don't know what kicked in your rage, but I had no intention of starting a fanboy/flame war. I love intel and AMD, I love computers. But absolutely no way ever in the existence of this universe were the i5's better or faster than X6's in anyway whatsoever.

I rest my case.

/debate

Did you even read those charts? Only 3 of those charts have the 1100T ahead of the i5-750. On top of that, that's the first generation i5, not the current Sandy Bridge i5 CPUs. Frankly, I'm rather appalled that the 1100T lost so many of those tests...

Again, we're talking about current generation Sandy Bridge i5/i7 CPUs, not the previous generation. In that respect, I rest my case.

Also, I'm running a Phenom II X4 965BE right now (see my signature), so your "mr. intel fanboi 4 lif3" jab at me is quite amusing. If anything, I'm an AMD fanboy, but even I can see that the Sandy Bridge quad cores are superior to AMD's current offerings. With any luck, Bulldozer will change that.

Also, your video has the 2500k winning as well. You're proving my point all too well; the Sandy Bridge i5/i7 CPU's are much faster than AMD's 6-core CPUs.

Thank you for helping me out bud. :)

I would love to debate if there was anything to debate? One, the 2500k is not even on that list. Two, check out what tomshardware recommends CPU wise:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-llano-processor,2989-3.html
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-llano-processor,2989-4.html

I must be missing the X6 processor on that list of recommendations. But as far as useless benches go, ones that cater to 6 cores may see a slight advantage to the X6, but that is usually not even the case with the 2500k in the picture. Not to mention, the amount of places where 6 cores will even benefit you are almost nonexistent. This also does not change the fact that this technology is already old and outdated as well as far behind intels. Bulldozer is AMDs only hope atm.
