Here are some juciy details regarding the upcoming World of Warplanes game and newly announced world of battleships game,

Excerpts for those that think TL:DR

World of Battleships

Yes, there will be planes, but players won?t be able to control aircraft directly in World of Battleships. ?As a carrier, the only weapon you?ve got is AI planes. You launch the planes, they go to a particular location, and they?ll either find something to shoot on the way, or they run out of fuel and head home. The smaller, fast ships can evade or fight off planes as they get a fix on the bigger ships, so your battleships can begin to fire.?

Carriers take the place of SPGs, battleships take the place of heavy tanks, and then cruisers, frigates, destroyers, PT boats, and the like will fill out the skirmish, scout, and anti-aircraft roles.

There wll not be any submarines due to balance mechanics and the problem that there will be too many subs and one ship to kill and gamers would spend forever trying to find each others subs.

World of Warplanes

Planes date from the 1930s and its slow biplanes, right up through the 1950s. It?ll include the Korean War-era planes and early jet planes

It?s 15 vs. 15, and while there isn?t cover like in World of Tanks per se, you?ve got clouds and the blinding sun? At launch, you?ll have 60 planes: American, Russian, and German, followed by the English and Japanese, and maybe a half dozen maps. But just like World of Tanks, in a matter of weeks you?ll maybe get more planes and more maps for free

Though takeoffs and landings won?t be a part of the game, bases will. Frazer noted that bases have anti-aircraft defenses to protect against lone wolves breaking away from the pack to have a run at the base. That implies that bases will have a certain number of hitpoints that opposing planes will have to winnow away, but the amount of AAA, HP amount, and the difficulty of hitting the base wasn?t covered

World of Warplanes will also have more mission types than it?s predecessor. Frazer hinted at one mission type where AI-controlled bombers proceed on a straight line to the enemy base and it?s up to players to escort (or attack the enemy bombers). Regardless of the mission type, players will always have two ways to win, destroy all enemy planes, or destroy the enemy base before the enemy destroys yours.

Regarding Both vs World of Tanks

In World of Warplanes everyone can be a hero and everyone can be an ace. This is because this game will be a little more around teams of players going 1 v1 and not having to rely on blob tactics. World of battleships will rely more on the team working together as one since a carrier off by itself will be an easy target and needs to remain with the fleet in the center so as to concentrate its AA.

Looks pretty sweet to me!

I hope the flying aspect of the game is a lot easier than IL-2 1946....that game is damn near impossible (unless you have rudder controls)!

This is disappointing to be honest.

If World of Battleships is just a grind-fest to Battleships it won't encourage rounded out fleets. Even the best ships had cruiser and destroyer escorts. PT Boats weren't so much open water as they were short range harbor defense.

And the no subs thing, when it's been done decently in Navyfield and games like Battlestations: Midway it wouldn't be that hard. I think making it work would just take more work and it sound like they don't want to put that work in. Free game though so that complaint doesn't have as much merit.

EDIT: I do love that WoB will depend on Team Work though. That is a great aspect.

As for World of Warplanes only having Russian, German and American planes at the onset...well shucks lol. So much for my ace dreams. Spitfires all the way so I guess I'll be waiting.

Im sure it wont be a grind fest to battleships and that battleships will be invincible. It will be tougher but the good thing is that smaller ships like destroyers and frigates will be smaller and harder to hit due to their small size and speed and be able to get in close very quickly and launch torps.

There's absolutely no way I'd be able to coordinate well enough with enough people to play World of Battleships. I'd have to be in direct control of the whole fleet.

World of Warplanes(lol WoW acronym), however...

Yeah I could see that being a major problem. If you don't designate someone as being in charge of the Fleet, or if you do but no one accepts his command this game will be frustrating for many a player.

I'm thinking something Tribes style or even BF2142. Those did it pretty well.

Still bummed about no subs though. Also very curious how they will balance the game. At the start of the war a good fleet centered around 2-3 heavy ships (CV's or BB's) and several cruiser and destroyers for escort/anti-air.

The best shots recorded in the war weren't even done by the best ships. The German "Pocket Battleship" Scharnhorst holds the record for one of the longest hits in Naval history. The only other ship to record a hit even close to its range was the old and aging HMS Warspite.

So really most ships of the same type could go toe to toe with each other. There's so much to factor in too though. German ships were designed to be fast, harassing smaller ships while running away when the big guns show up. They never had a force to go all-out into a slug-fest with the Royal Navy.

I could ramble on and on. Suffice to say I will be following this game closely lol.

world of warplanes is something i have been looking forward to for a long time. i've always loved WWII era history for the amazing dog-fights.

Plus - being Air Force, i have a tendency to prefer Arial combat. :P

Solution is pre-made groups. I'm not thinking there's any way someone could play the game well enough with only random people.

Excited about ships, never really cared much for dogfights. Personally I feel World of Battleships could be much more balanced than World of Tanks, even a PT Boat can take out a battleship or carrier with a few well placed torpedoes.

I don't think it's going to be a battleship/carrier slugfest on smooth water in sunny perfect days every time.

Think lurking in fogbanks, choppy seas that limit visibility, destroyers putting down smokescreens/torpedo attacks. There's plenty that battleships and carriers have to worry about than just each other.

I would very much enjoy owning a Littorio class Battleship, I do hope they eventually have the Regia Marina in this game, though I'm guessing they won't at first.

Gotta try "Crossing the T" battle plan once the game launches as well. Classic naval strategy!
