Alright my peoples and people-ettes... Since we happen to have so many brainy types within the eGO fold ( :D ) I thought I would ask about languages. This has probably been done before; let's take it to the hoop! We have plenty of people who speak another language besides English, high school, university and graduate students, and even provisioners of knowledge like our very own Spetz; I started to wonder how many non-English tongues are spoken within our crew here. I'll start. My mom is Puerto Rican and my dad hails from S. Africa so I was given the gift of trilingualism in English, Nederlands (technically Afrikaans but not too different), and Espanol. I had to learn Arabic for my Middle Eastern / Africa studies majors, and was supposed to have to learn French but I've been putting that off :P (any Quebecois or Frenchies that wanna lend me a hand, I love you! :P). I have a hobbyists interest in Russian and Vietnamese, but I'm having trouble with Tang Viet (Lekk help plz :P). I meant to learn German in high school, but I wanted to take some AP classes so I just "took" Spanish and tested out.

What languages do you speak? I'm betting some of our FL members can put me to absolute shame. Don't be scurred, let's have some fun with this!
 
It's not Tang Viet, it's Tieng Viet = Vietnamese lol
I do have a list in FL forum that mentions the FL member nationality.

I speak a very small number of phrases in Arabic and Farsi, and can generally get what I need to say across while informing the listerner that I do not speak Arabic fluently. No formal learning, just listening and asking questions.
 
I can make small talk in Portuguese and Spanish as well as say naughty words :P...im better at insulting than actually talking in those languages though so im pretty useless when it comes to translating :)

Quite honestly that is the best way to learn any Arabic. The orthography and grammar are really hard to learn from an English background.
 
I'm liking what I'm seeing! Lots of polyglots in eGO just as I expected :D.

BTW Cryptex, yes, John Cleese it totally wrong on that point. There's English, and then there's American. :P It's like comparing Afrikaans to Dutch. Yeah, they're very very similar and mutually intelligible, but we all know which is which :P
 
I'm fluent in English because of my nationality. But i'm almost bilingual just from learning French in my highschool years. I dont know how but they had me do tests and they said that even thought I've only been taking it for the last 5 years one class every week i'm so close to being bilingual its not funny. So yah peterman if you need help with anything with Le Francais just pm me.
 
American 15 yrs or learning =)
English 3.5 yrs (lived there in peterbourgh)
French 2.6 yrs (school in england and again in HS.)
and french is similiar to spanish, so i can know of a few words... =)

I envy you greatly, you speak better English than a great many people that I know, and you have a sexy voice to boot.
