Having been part of a startup clan/community, it's a LOT harder than one thinks. My partner and I put in hundreds of hours with our CS 1.6 clan years ago, and only with moderate success. There's certainly things I'd do differently if I were to ever try it again, but it's a ton of time and effort just to be the 'boss'. And the bigger you get, the more time you spend dealing with BS that's not game related, and less time to actually gaming.
To keep a 30 slot server busy, one likely needs at least 40-50 members all of which play frequently. To pull in 40-50 members doesn't happen overnight. Let alone the thousands that eGO has.
I couldn't even imagine trying to do this across the different games eGO has. It's a lot of work, and something we should all consider and be thankful to those that have put that time and effort in to make eGO what it is today.
