Need help smoothing image

I'm making an Adventure Time background, and I need help smoothing out those sunbeams, I just can't seem to do it in GIMP in a way that works right.

Could someone show me how I could do this for future reference?

I tried gimp and I hated it.

When i do smoothing in Photoshop my first tool is to use the eraser. Set the hardness to 0% and the brush to something big and slowly work away at it.

But gimp could be different so I'm not exactly sure.

Tell me about it, I can't afford PS. Which sucks because I took a class on the whole Adobe Suite.

:S That must be bad, are you a student? They do some pretty good deals.

Try my method to see if it works though.

Also, if it were me I would make the rays fit the image, or atleast bigger so when they fade out they won't become invisible.

Just a quick chop.
So what I did was copy the girl and sparkes loosely... don't have to be to exact.
Then, on the background ... smudge tool. Draging the bursts outward from the edge.
Then did a sunburst brush in orange over top of the other 2 layers.
Finally.. used the clear brush... and removed the sunburst over top of the girl.
