Will someone tell me what a 'Brick' is; and how to get rid of it?

My computer has been acting up, claiming to have 0 physical memory available and full CPU usage. I can't run any programs like system restore, and my virus scanner can only do a minor scan because I get 'access denied' if I try to do a deep scan. It found something, however, and it just calls it a 'Brick,' and my virus software tried to delete it but then it got an 'Access denied' error and crashed; and now I can't start up my computer. I had to bring in my other laptop to type this post.

Can someone tell me what the hell a 'Brick' is and why my primary laptop won't work anymore?

:((

probably a Virus.. your best bet is to reformat start fresh its the best way to get rid of any virus!

Yeah, I know, but I can't! It won't turn on at all. The power button glows, but no boot sequence or anything, just a blank screen.

well then it looks like it took over youre hdd,
put in WinXP disc,
tell your comp to boot from CD,
delete the partition,
create and format a new one and you should be good to go
then reinstall XP, i did that this weekend, real fun to format a 250gb...

I can't do any of that :( As I said it will not boot up at all

Yeah that's pretty much your last option. It seems that your HDD has been completely taken over.

Reinstall windows/whatever os you use. Reformat your HDD, create a new partition, and install it there.

@2nd post from mine, above: Ah this changes everything. It seems that either your computer cannot load the BIOS or that the BIOS itself is corrupted. Or one of many other problems.

Just to get some general info, please do the following/answer these questions:

1. Unplug your HDD and attempt to start your computer. Please reply stating whether you can reach the BIOS or not.
2. Does your HDD spin up or just sit there dead?
3. Does your monitor a) remain in "sleep" mode or b) fully turn on, but still show nothing.
4. What OS do you use?
5. How long have the issues in general been occurring with your computer?
6. Do you have an installation CD for your OS?
7. Does your computer make any beeping noises at any point? If so, how many, long or short, and at what point of operation?
8. Was your antivirus software updated?
9. If you can get into the BIOS, try to boot from a disc, any disc that is bootable just to see if you are able to.
10. Is there anything else you can think of that could be useful in resolving this? (Error messages, hardware malfunctions, any idea where you got the virus from, etc)

Please answer all that you can.

@rogue "real fun to format a 250gb": lucky you, I have dual 500gb drives that were both affected once. 1TB reformatting = maximum boredom.

1. In all honesty, I don't think our warranty goes void if I open up my laptop by myself :S
2. It just sits there dead.
3. No, the screen is fine.
4. Windows Vista Home premium
5. Since, say, March 13th
6. Yes, it came with the computer
7. No beeps
8. Yes, that is how I knew it was a 'brick' as that is what it told me, but after I tried to delete it is when my computer crashed.
9. If I can get into the bios, I will.
10. The only place I can think of where the virus could come from is the fact that the hospital I'm in uses an unprotected wireless network that is pretty powerful, you can reach it over almost a mile away from the building with 3 signal strength bars.

I'm going to assume you made sure the power cable to your HDD was secure. Your HDD is completely dead.

I honestly do not have time to elaborate at all at the moment.
Priority one is regaining your ability to reach the BIOS and boot into...anything.

Do you have a spare? Try to use that so I can narrow down the issue further. The virus seems to have taken a serious toll on your system, hopefully it's just the HDD that was badly affected.

@10 unsecured wireless = VERY bad idea.

@1 just read it, ah poopy. Laptop-ness makes this far more difficult. And wait you still have a warranty? Does it cover hardware failure? If so just send it back to them and give them your headaches sorting it out for you.

Wow, a brick. Okay, I'll expand on this. A brick is a term that means your computer is a 'BRICK'. It is in a sense worthless. You somehow have probably gotten firmware into your hdd or other hardware in your computer. Firmware is a program built into that specific hardware, which means you cant get it out. Like apples said before, hopefully its just your hdd. Wow, i havent ever seen a actual BRICK in my life and i fix a buncha computers. I'm seriously amazed. I dont really know what to tell you. You cant get into bios to see anything, so i have no idea. Try gettin extra cheap harddrive and get into bios. Sorry man.

*edit* Sorry i just saw that your cpu and ram was showing up as 0. That might mean that your cpu and ram has a problem with it too if it shows up as 0 in performance.

*edit2* And, in addition when you tried to delete it, you crashed your computer. That means whatever you deleted or tried to took away some files. All hardware comes with firmware which allows it to function, so hopefully you didn't delete any basic files on say your mbo or cpu that contains nesscary files that allows you to function.

*edit3*and it said acess denied, probably because it was firmware on a peice of hardware. It all makes sense but that doesnt mean its true, but it kinda looks like it is an actuall virus on your hardware.
