Why do most eGO members avoid our custom map server? Ever since joining eGO I've tried to figure this out, so now I'm just asking.

Is it because you don't like the short download?

Is it because you only like to play the same map that you've always played?

Is it because you don't like new maps?

Is it because you didn't know we had a custom map server?

Was it because nobody was playing in it before? They are now!!

I am very interested in seeing the real reasons....so hope some folks reply.

Out,
Colonel

I like them, just avoid some maps there and the fact that the dl's take a lot of time from my bad computer. But I encourage people to play them!

I don't know, a lot of the maps on there are better than the maps on our 24/7 non-rotation servers.
It's always the same 14-18 people that I ever see...

the only way to truly get better at the game is to play a diverse set of maps. if you onlyplay for example donner and strand. especially STRAND which has no real competitive value. if you get caught in a scrim against another clan or in cal or sumthigng it will take you some time to adjust to not being around whats familiar.

BUT its a game and games are meant to be for the fun and the lulz so its really whatever suites you.

Anyway, I hate people's aversion to the KK server, it's awesome. Get in there peeps!

Honestly, you'll find that most DoD veterans who are seeking to improve and grow with DoD will embrace custom maps. They are already comfortable with the game play, weapons and nuances of DoD and are seeking new challenges. The challenge no longer to "master" a map but to master the "game" and other players. You'll find these same players active in the scrim program, CAL and VIE (or some sort of competitive play). They have evolved.

I know that a big part of it also it the camaraderie and friendship that some members have developed with players on a certain server. Some people simply like playing with their friends. That’s fine, bring them to the Kettle as well. Make new friends.

That's my theory. It's my hope that our members will grow to love the custom side of DoD. To me it's what makes this game so fascinating. Anybody can re-create history or a battle by making a custom map or weapon/player skins.

Get on the Kettle! find out what you’re missing. There’s a whole different side of DoD your missing. And once you’re hooked, you're hooked forever.

See ya on Kolsch! :)

LOVE HINA FTW!!!
and btw,,,most eGO's dont avoid the KK server....most of them are busy on the other servers....or are not on^^

I've been on it a couple of times, particularly for the Dropzone map, but was put off that map for a dumb reason; when exiting the plane, there was no parachute or PLF involved, it just seemed like I would randomly get hurt or not get hurt upon landing, and it bothered me because I instinctually went to check canopy, saw there was none, and felt a tightening in my chest. After a couple respawns of that mess, I had to disconnect or risk some kind of anxiety attack.

Wow, a thread like this that I didn't start? Neat.

As has been said over and over, we certainly encourage folks to get in there and give it a try. Sure, you won't like every map (like the dropzone example above), but that's why the maps switch every 30 minutes.

Take a chance, expand your horizons. Plus, the stats there are different, so it won't affect your ranking. AND, those in the top 10 of the custom stats get a chance to win actual prizes (gift certificate to any online store!). For reference again, its at: 8.12.18.103:27015

I would play them, just my pc doesn't like them, only donner mainly lets me play without getting the error message about something about vertex not being locked, really weird!

anyway, i am sorry guys, i am just gonna have to stick to probs donner and avalanche, and maybe the odd other

I don't think I'm avoiding the KK server, in fact I'm trying to play on it. But there are so many servers ( :P ) and so little time, so the server I play on depends on the day and my mood. But as a general rule it goes as follows:

I look first of all at all the servers and see how many players are playing on each server/map; There are then 3 possibilities:

1) a server/map is full. In general I will not join it because I want to try to help to make our unfilled servers full(er) -- I'm not needed on a full server. But there are exceptions. Sometimes, no in fact quite often, I'm determined to play a particular map because I want to try out some new tactics there, or try to recreate some of the great game play moments we had with the same players the day before on that map. This is often the case for the strand and donner server (and the avalanche server, but for some reason I have not played on it yet I think)

2) a 32 slot server has say 17+ players on. This is often the case for kalt and flash. I will then join it, enjoy it ( ;) ) and help to fill the server

3) a server is essentially empty. For example, strand is empty from when I wake up till about 4pm (GMT+1) here in Western Europe. Now, of course an empty server is boring, so few people join an empty server. What I did a few days ago was to join the empty server and test some admin commands. Surprisingly a few people started to join, and we started to play the game (with announced cap order, otherwise the map is too big), and at 1pm we had about 20 players on! So I think from now on I will deliberately join an empty server more often and try to reproduce what happened on that day.(FYI, the number of players decreased back to almost 0 quickly after I joined specs to have lunch, so I guess it's important to actually be there on axis or allies and animate the game, not just to be in specs).

So you can understand why the KK server get's not picked as often as the others:

  • * It's almost impossible to "continue" a game the next day because the same map will not be on on the same time, or not long enough (mapchange after 45 mins or so?)
    * After dropzone and kolsch were announced, I was all excited about it, and wanted to try these new maps that I had never played. So I went to the KK server. But there I found other maps on, not kolsch or dropzone. So after playing 1 or 2 other maps through the rotation cycle, I left with a frustration of not having played the maps I was looking for (according to my mood of the day).
    * People like to choose the map they play on before joining the server, or like to be able to vote for the map they like once in the server. It's like ordering what you want to eat from a menu when you go to a restaurant. First you choose whether you want to eat Italian, Indian, Chinese, Mexican, etc. Then you go to such a restaurant, where you would like to choose something from a menu. I don't think many people choose the "meal of the day" without first knowing what it is.
Note that this is unrelated to the quality of each map in the rotation on KK.

So what suggestions can we draw from this?

First, a map vote after each map when players are on.
Second, to make it easier for people to pick the custom map they like, you could
do for example: dod_kolsch on mondays, dod_dropzone on tuesdays, etc,
or: dod_kolsch each day at 4pm, 8pm, 2am; dod_dropzone each day at 5pm, 9pm; etc.
It s a bit like scheduling radio programs at fixed days and hours, so people will know when to tune in for their
favorite programs. You can then publish a radio guide (play list) for each day:
for example:

Monday (GMT):
1am: dod_kolsch
2am: dod_dropzone
3am: santos
4am: dod_carentanfield_v1 - fun open field map
5am: dod_battlebridge - village map with a....guess......bridge
6am: dod_pier_b2 - dock fighting at it's best.....enjoy it Crazy Canadian!
7am: dod_cherbourg - a Source version of the classic dod_cherbourg from pre Source DoD
8am: dod_bleakhill - ALL HAIL the BLEAK'NESS.........best map ever in DoD...well arguably.....whats the saying, "opinions are like __holes, everyone's got one"
9am: dod_napoli_b1 - kinda similar to an Anzio but with rooftop access like in dod_isernia
10am: dod_fuel_b3 - Source version of the old official map dod_kraftsoff from DoD 1.3.....fun map
11am: dod_hameau_rc1
noon: dod_rommel_b1
1pm: 1am: dod_kolsch
2pm: dod_dropzone
3pm: santos
...
11pm: dod_rommel_b1
midnight: dod_bleakhill

Tuesday
1am: ...
...
11pm: ...
midnight: ...

etc.

Just like you would read a radio or TV guide.

If you do it like that you can also allow people to reserve a particular map for a particular time slot on a first come first served basis (with the exception may be of certain days and hours during the week).

These were just some ideas that came to my mind. Colonel, I hope you find them of some interest.

At first I played a lot of donner and ava when i was an e. Then I got into strand for a loooong time. Then, just a month or two ago, I played KK a lot more. The last few days, i've been going back and forth between ava and KK.

I guess the reason a lot of people dont play it is because the maps are not well known, and when pubs look for a server, they usually do it by map. Thats what I did when I was a pub, I would search for the most active 24/7 ava or donner servers.
I guess the reason why eGO members dont play a lot of KK is because its too unfamiliar. I was hesitant to play it at first because it wasnt the maps I started with, so I didn't play with the same people. I didn't really know people that played there, and I didn't know how to get around the maps. It just seemed too much of a hassle to play. Some KK member (cant remember who) had invited me to play personally, and that got me into it.

That is my suggestion. Personally invite some of your friends that don't usually play KK. Help them to get to know the map.

I've never played on KK because I like Ava/Kalt/Donner. I'm accustomed to the layout and use of weapons in each map.

*shrugs* I think a lot of people just enjoy the familiarity of the non-rotation maps. However, I will shed a leaf and try out KK in the future. I do not doubt that the maps are good just hard to break a habit. ;)

The reason I joined eGO was that they had a good flash server. Flash is my alternative to jagd, and since I have NEVER seen jagd on eGO servers, its just natural for me to go there. I am quite interested in playing kolsch (sp) for it looks completely like a bad mofo, but find when I'm most, no one is ever on the KK server except for maybe 10 people who are all in spec mode.

I really try to stay away from maps that have like say 10 peeps on it, but all in spec, cause to me, its false advertising and why bother.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a BIG custom fan, ever since CS 1.6. I have even gone as far as to play dod_dust2 when i can find it., even walmart on all cs, and dod games. I like having to play an environment like that, cause lets face it, not many wars happen in the US, and would kinda give you a feel for what its like. I also really dug the simpsons maps of CS, CZ amd CS:S. Custom to me is great, its like a drug, and I had to have it.

Its just like i said before, there are a few turn offs for me, as well as play time.

i play on the KK server almost every night, and theres ALWAYS a good amount of ppl on, and i ALWAYS have a great time (even if theres only 6 players, ull still have fun).... and kolsch and dropzone arent the only two GREAT maps colonel and spetz have put on the server......... there r a crap load of GREAT maps, just give them a try!!!! !amazed
