Stay Healthy & Play Battlefield 3. A "game" I designed to reward myself.

So with Battlefield 3 only a week away, I expect many people to be spending more time behind their computer monitor owning it up in Battlefield 3. I know for myself, I took Tuesday-Friday off just so I have any time I'd like to play.

However, also my goal to join the Air Force would mean that I should be spending time at the gym .. but who wants to work and sweat if you can just game all day? :w00t:

So I decided to reward, or, punish myself for the amount of work[out] I put in. This I find is a great way for those either out of shape, in shape, or average to balance themselves. If you're not motivated, it simply won't work though.

Basically, give yourself a reward system. Set a goal and if you reach that goal, you earn X hours of game play.

Here is my example:
Goal: 12 Minute Mile. For every mile I run in 12 minutes, I can play 1 hour of Battlefield 3.
Incentive: For every minute that I shave off the 12 minute goal, I add an extra 30 minutes of game time.

So,
If I run 1 Mile in 11 Minutes, I can play for 1.5 hours
If I run 2 Miles in 23 Minutes, I can play for 2.5 hours
If I run 4 Miles in 48 Minutes, I can play for 4 hours

You will want to do your first session on the 24th, to reward play time on the 25th (Release)
*** Set your goals and rewards accordingly.

I already know that I can do a 12 minute mile. I also know I can do a 10 minute mile on a good day. For the Air Force, I need to run 8 minute miles. I reward my progression with game times. I know that for the first week, I could probably easily put in 4-5, maybe even 6+ hours of game time PER DAY. What does that mean? I may be running for up to 72 Minutes a day to EARN my game time. Get yourself in shape - Get rewarded with the ability to sit in a comfy chair for hours ;)

If you don't have a treadmill, run around your block. Just carry a watch, or a phone that has a timer on it. (There's an app for that!)

I'd recommend this to anyone. If you can only do a 20 minute mile, fine, set your goal accordingly. If you prefer to lift weights instead of running, go ahead and create your own goals/rewards for doing so.

It's good to stay in shape/stay healthy, but the majority of people lack motivation/reasoning as to why they want to make themselves uncomfortable. Stick to a reward system like this, and it will help you at least be active for a little while throughout the day.

It seems a little...obsessive that you've planned this all. :P

I just play and exercise hard during my opportunities. Do you really expect me to TIME myself? :P

Really, its a good idea. Good luck!

This is a very good reward system you have going there Burns. [LIE] I myself do not need it as I am very in shape! I am as buff as a buffalo! [LIE] I can run a 10 minute mile O.K. 8 minutes on a nice day. I might even use this system you have going there... I might just start today and build up 3 days of constant game time on release! *Chuckles* [LIE] Not that there is any fat to burn off... I can't even get faster at running. [LIE]

Sure, who doesn't time themselves? I think almost all runners will usually run either a certain distance, then check how long it took them .. or they will run for a certain amount of time, and then check how far they ran.

Weight lifting is the same thing. Reps/Sets are always calculated, one doesn't just pick up weights and say to themselves that they'll just lift it till they can't anymore.

I know from my past experience, if I sit myself in front of my PC, I will make excuses to not go to the gym, or say "I'll do double tomorrow", but that never happens.

This "game" or "challenge" I designed, literally came to mind within a minute or so while I was running earlier, and its sole purpose is to kind of force you to work out in order to be allowed to game. (As long as you keep with it)

People will say they don't go to the gym, or don't do laps around their block because they don't have free time, and yet, these same people may be sitting in front of their PC for 2-3 hours a night gaming.

Not saying anybody here needs to do it, but, everyone should care about their health, and caring about your health while being a hardcore gamer may be difficult, and I find this method to be a good way to get the best of both worlds.

Gizzmo, I wish I could run an 8min/mile. Damn hard! I need to work on my breathing - that is what kills me!

Only reason I didn't start now is because by the time BF3 is released, I may have enough hours racked up to just take the whole week off from running. I was aiming for an 8 minute mile today, but started cramping and couldn't even dish out a 10 minute mile .. ended up running a 12min mile. I was disappointed >_< I figure rewarding myself with game time, and giving myself MORE game time by running faster laps may just be that extra motivation I need.

Huh...this system reminds me of how I procrastinate on my homework...maybe its actually a good idea... :P

Maybe I will go time myself sometime. Who knows? Either way, I'm gonna play a lot of Battlefield 3. That is already a fact. :P

Well I don't run an 8 minute mile with ease! I have a trick that seems to work best running around the gym, it will greatly help your breathing too! When I run I breathe through the nose and out the mouth until I am really tired and run out of breathe. After I run out of breath I stop for 5-10 seconds and take a couple deep breathes in the mouth and out the nose or the other way around I can't remember. Anyways, I find that technique really helps me rejuvenate my energy... Hope this helps!

Setting goals for running is almost the only way I can stand to do it. Best reasons for me are for ladies and if there was a zombie apocalypse (need that cardio to run from zombies)

Good Luck!

Zombies are slow, you can get away with a brisk walk ;-)

Also it has been a while since i ran regularly but when I used to, I could run the 3 mile in under 18min though it was just under 18... like 17m30s but I sure felt like I was going to die every time I pushed myself that hard but it was nice knowing that I could. And it is good for you setting goals like that though I would recommend you run up-hill or on an inclined treadmill to help you push your limits then when you get on a flat track you will do even better ;-)

Now, now. That violates the code of Zombieland. Cardio, double tap, and wear your seatbelts...

Also, enjoy the little things. :P

Done my time running, I have always been in great physical shape lucky genes there I guess. I fully agree with staying in shape and working on your health, I personally don't work at it in the slightest bit. If I had a concern about going outside and running 5 miles I would probably start working on keeping in shape.

I also recommend that you try out the more rugged terrain of running will help you out once you get in. If you used to running inclines and pushing yourself on the rougher terrain it will make the flat running a lot easier. Don't tell me that your treadmill does the inclines either it's not the same. This is a great idea though to keep yourself motivated.

This all reminds me of when I was doing my intel school on a Air Force Base, I would wake up at 2-4am with the rest of the Marines. (only 5 of my very specialized MOS but we would meet up with the other 2 platoons stationed there.) We would proceed to wake up all the Air Force Barracks doing our 5 mile cadence run. They hated us but we loved doing it to them.

If you don't time yourself, one can lose focus, and not push as hard. While I don't see the need to impose limits on my gaming or trading my gaming time with exercise, I can understand one doing it.

I started really running regularly on Sept 19th. 3km (1.86 miles) took 35 minutes. Within a week (running every 2-3 days) that was down to 24mins. My best time is 17:24. However I'll regularly hit the 19 min mark even when feeling off. I usually only run every 2nd or 3rd day as it's mixed in with workouts (or that's the plan now that I'm back in town), and I like to keep it short and quick. My next challenge is to run that 3km on an incline, and gradually making it steeper over time. Yay for tread mills.

1 hour of reading for my degree = 1 hour play time, sounds good

Agreed, although it's probably going to be both reading and actual work for me. If only group projects can work this way. - - People tend to not cooperate and care more about getting drunk or obtaining "essential" desires.

Before I do anything as soon as I get home I run 2 miles after school every day, then play.

Also look at greens things
And stuff far away.. outside your windows
Like trees...
REAL trees.

Help *rest* yours eyes.
