Battlefield 3 stuttering/chuggin - read this if this happens to you

Your screen flashes sound similar, mine are either green or white flashes. I even uninstalled my drivers and reinstalled using the custom tab that deletes all previous drivers and associated software. To top it all off I keep getting kicked out of every server. I would just love to be able to install the game and just play. :) I will try to disable the hyper-threading, does the system take a performance hit form that?

No performance hit at all actually. my cpu runs cooler when playing the game also with HT off. These processors are no where near being maxed when playing modern games. My I7 930 only uses about 50% of each core while playing. I checked after turning off HT and it still only used 50% per core.

I see yours is OC'd but there is no way you would have to OC to game at this point. I wouldn't recommend OC'ing till it was necessary unless you are using the OC to do something other than gaming = video transcoding, etc. It does shorten the processors life OC'ing to some extent even if you keep it cool. Since your CPU is even more powerful than mine I doubt you would have to OC for a while if mine is only using 50% per core now haha.

BTW, you should always keep HT off if you OC that causes instability. You can get away with it if you don't push it to far, but you can get a alot better OC with HT off. You should also turn off the speedstep feature when overclocking.

Two things you should look at if you decided to stay overclocked :)

Stuttering also happens for other odd reasons, clearing the DNS cache once in a while helps immensely with online games.

I'm not a super techie by any means. But lucky me my dad started in computers from the days of punch cards (and yes, I am old enough that I knew how to program in BASIC by the time I was 6 on my Atari 800, and yes, I still play video games).

Anyway, here are two great programs. Both are free-ware. Both are clean and well recognized in all communities. One is a simple cleaner that is FAR more effective then the Windows system cleaner. The other a better version of Disk Defrag. Get both, run the cleaner regularly.

Update your drivers and happy hunting.

Does any one know how to disable hyper threading without going through the bios? My laptop is a g73jw with the i7 740qm normally I would go through the bios but there is no option to disable

Fire, that pic you showed doesn't look like mine, mine say Intel EIST, Intel XD BIT and Intel VT.....now what?:(

Hey MachineGunMack, unfortunately I did a little digging on your computer and it looks like alot of people have complained about not having the disable HT option on that computer. Gateway and other computer manufacturers tend to really dummy down their Bios on their computer to keep people from changing settings. It's possible that if you install the latest and greatest bios for your computer that the option might be available now. There are other sites that mod bios' for you computer, but you would have to be extremely careful about running a modded bios because if it doesn't installed right, your computer won't work at all. One such site = http://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Forum-Ami-Bios-Unlocking-Requests?page=8

If you still have warranty on the computer you can call support and see if they can help too.

To start reading up you can go to google and type in ........ Gateway fx6800 disable hyperthreading and see all the links.

If you didn't want to do any of that, then the only option would be to buy a new x58 motherboard that will fit into the case.

I would try to see if gateway's website has a bios update and if they do, try updating the bios per their instructions to see if you get a disable hyperthreading option.

Sorry man.... hopefully you can find a solution!

I do not know of a way to disable hyperthreading via windows. All i can say is search google and if you find a solution please post it for anyone else :/

Dude, I have no clue what I did..Just uninstalled old drivers then reinstalled, rebooted and the game ran perfectly smooth, just played for about 45 mins of smooth BF3 and it was awesome.

I think the Hyperthreading logic is a bit off here.

You have to ask what operating system is running too. If it's XP, well, yes, 10 years ago there was a problem with but I think it was fixed a few years ago in SP3. If you are running Windows 7 (unbelievable by the way, makes Vista run like XP!), it is coded so smoothly that the scheduler actually has a brain. Thank you Microcrap.

Anyway, with a more modern processor, especially a i72600k, hyperthreading will not hinder gameplay in the least as far as I can see.

I'd check the bottlenecks at other areas. First would be memory. Second would be GPU.

I'm definitely not wrong on this one. It instantly fixed my game. I made no other changes. I switched it back on..........stuttering. There are other games it affects and applications that just don't work well with hyperthreading. Hit google up if you are bored. You can hit up the official bf3 forums to see that disabling ht fixed others issues as well.

I do not know that this helps players with NVidia cards, maybe it's the combination of ATI/Hyperthreading.

BTW, you can't run BF3 on XP...........

Oh, I know the XP thing (Direct X and all), I was merely commenting on the logic behind HT. All it adds is a virtual core, allowing the processor divide the work over one core. Mufti-tasking at its best so to speak. In Windows 7, especially with a newer processor like the mighty 2600k, I just find it really hard to understand why the processor would be a bottleneck and cause stuttering.

Though you might have hit on something with the heat. I helped a buddy of mine build a core i7 set-up not long ago and he was stuttering mightily in a few games (he liked Metro). Couldn't figure it out, though I took note that he was stubborn on the build and stuck with the stock cooler. I suggested a new cooler and he goes out and buys one of the self contained water coolers (enermax? can't remember). Well, he installs it and still has the same problem. Goes on like this for months. I recently built a new computer for myself, but I am not familiar with water cooling, so I went old-school. But I also went old-school overkill and got a Noctua NH-D14. My temps were cooler on an older AMD chip then his 2600k on water. So he goes out and buys one. Sure enough, after 1 week of break-in time, no more stuttering and he's running 10c cooler. Go figure.

Are you running a lot of background programs perhaps? I'm pretty sure you have Autoruns for windows (nice little process explorer there), sometimes you have to check that regularly to see if something changed.

Nice chatting though. Sorry, I'm the new guy and I just happened to latch onto this thread.

Thanks for the advice. I really don't need to overclock it, it is more of a want than need. It is so damn fast even at regular speeds I just wanted to see how high I could overclock it and keep it stable while using liquid cooling. I am running at 58-60 degrees Celsius maxed out so I don't think it is a cooling issues but I am going to reset the CPU settings to stock just to try it out. One thing I do know is that I never had issues like this prior to installing the Nvidia drivers for BF3.

Update: I did a bit of searching and found out that this is a common issue with the Intel Sandy Bridge CPU's such as the Core i7 2600K and disabling will fix it. Thanks for the help guys.

I know you aren't trolling, but you should have did a little investigating before posting again. Like I said before, hyperthreading is known to impact some applications, databases, and games. This is especially apparent in the last generation of I7 processors = nehalem. I have not checked to see if the sandy bridge implementation of HT has fixed these issues with the exact same games, applications, and databases. HyperThreading does not negatively affect other games, applications, and databases and can actually increase performance in others.

Here is one article showing negative impact

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i7-975-950_7.html#sect0

and here are some searches if you want to read more

BTW, I have a Thermalright Venomous X cpu cooler and heat is definitely not my or 1000's of other ppl's issue. When gaming with HT on my cpu cores get to around 53 Max - some ppl idle close to this :) With HT off my cpu cores get to around 50 Max.

I've had two people personally tell me already that turning off HT fixed their stuttering issue in BF3 and have seen others on the bf3 forums also say that this fixed their issues as well.

Ya, i wasn't sure with sandy bridge because i have a nehalem, hopefully between the drivers and HT off you can get a little better performance. For my nehalem and 5780 it was night and day just turning off HT and now my game runs great. Let me know how it goes!

I just found an article that puts the blame on the latest Nvidia drivers. They are saying if you have driver version 285.62 and run at ultra setting which I do you will have stuttering and shadow corruption. I am going to turn off HT in the meantime but it would be nice to be able to keep it on since Dice is saying that BF3 takes full advantage of HT.
