Im not sure which route I want to go: AMD/ATI or Nvidia.

I have trusted Nvidia cards for the last 10 years and I havent been let down yet. But.. I am looking to build a high end Solid gaming platform needing very little upgrade for a few years. Money/cost is not an issue :)

That said, here are my choices:

2x GTX 590 EVGA @ ~$1600

3x GTX 580 MSI @ ~$1800

2x 6990/6970 @ ~$1600

3x 6950 @ ~$1600

My question is this.. what card/s will give me THE BEST overall game play(?), baseing that games will now be more graphics intensive since BF3's release. Aswell, what temperatures can I expect out of these gpu's?

This is the only thing I am stuck on for this build. any and all suggestions accepted... but please dont "fan boy"... Im looking for good solid fact based info.

thanks

your Q6600 is going to be a massive bottleneck, and i am not quite sure why you would need nearly that much GPU power to run a 22" monitor.

Regardless.

The best value is usually considered to be 6990+6970, since tri-fire scales pretty well, but Quad is kinda a mess still.

however, BF3 gets all kinds of jitters with CFX, so unless you are willing to wait a little bit for a fix, I would go with either 3x570s, or 3x580s

I should have specified.... thats my fault.. This is on a new build.. i7 2700K, on an MSI Big Bang Marshall, 16gb Patriot w/ 1500w psu running a 27" backlit and a 22" backlit

is the 27, 2560x1440?

for 1080p, this would still be rediculous overkill....

and i guess ill have to delete some messages, stupid ego and their tiny PM box....

ok, let me ask this:

is it possible to use both reference and non-reference video cards together, as long as the clock speeds match:

ie, 2x reference GTX 580 + 2x non-reference GTX 580 in a stagered formation : ref/non/ref/non

clocks don't even need to match nowadays. so yea, that should work assuming they are all GTX 580s

Still not quite sure why you think you need that much GPU for 1080p....

WOOT!

epic setup there

(as much as i think the Classified looks rediculous :p)

That's an awesome grab.

I am a bit confused though ... 1080p isn't anywhere near that intensive as far as I've found. I'm running BF3 @ 1080p in-game resolution with a single GTX 460 768MB and my graphics are sitting on near-maxed. That's with zero lag or performance hitches.

I can see where a second monitor could complicate things on my setup, but I think unless you started looking into more, much bigger monitors than what you have, wouldn't SLI 580s be drastic overkill?

This was fixed with Cap4 (the day after release). I'm running 2x 2GB 6950's in crossfirex @ 1920x1080 (until Dice fixes multimonitor tagging) and am averaging ~100+fps @ ultra w/ no deferred AA or HBAO and high post AA (FXAA). Smooth as butter :) No stutter whatsoever.

Good call on the 3GB cards -- I'm hitting 1.7GB or so regularly at 1920x1080. I'm fairly convinced the engine is dynamically scaling it's framebuffer usage based on your GPU, but better safe than sorry. If you ever make the jump to multimonitor or a nice 30in 2560x you will be glad to have the 3GB cards.

edit: The above memory usage is re: Battlefield 3

He may not need the 2 580s right now, but he said he wanted to future proof for a little, so that along with the 3gb is a great choice.
