Well for that offroad, laid back style of racing I love DiRT. Its great, and I love Travis and his bros.
For that formal "buy a car, race, upgrade" thing, Forza 4 absolutely blew me away.
Although, the whole simulation feel if Test Drive Unlimited 2 was also great fun.

I cant believe nobody plays Fortza motorsport All of you get out

Love Forza. I used to be big into the GT series, but when I converted to Xbox 360 from PS3 I lost the option to play GT, so I moved to Forza. It's really a great franchise. Not the realism package that GT offers in some ways, but for a racer it's pretty satisfying in career mode.

My wife and I sit at the TV with the steering wheel and pedals for days on end once we get started! Glad someone mentioned the series!

Thought my all-time favorite would have to be an old school Blizzard Entertainment title: Rock 'n Roll Racing!! I played that game to death when it came out, though that was 20 years ago.
