Steam workshop question

Is anyone familiar with making hats/items for the tf2 workshop? I would like to try to make a couple hats, but I don't know what program to use or how to get started. I watched the tutorial, but it would be a lot more helpful have someone take me through the first steps.

I would definitely use Blender and a good 2d program (Photoshop or Gimp).

Also if it's your first time modeling, rather than using the TF2 tutorial try starting out with CG Cookie, they are an amazing free resource.

I know nothing about it but if I were to use it, I would probably use photoshop to design then, Cinema 4d or Blender to make it
