Ok so here's my build from last year that i was working on but never finished

I already have the case and mobo so those things are taken care of but is there anything else on this list that i can update or improve on to make it more current?
 
What's your budget? What are you going to do with it? That will help out alot.

Also pcpartpicker.com will help format your list so it's readable.

Why do you have a 200 dollar sound card in there? Onboard sound is more than enough for most users. Consider dropping that card unless you are a HUGE audiophile. Also consider spending the extra money you saved by not buying that sound card on a 256GB SSD. Samsung/Crucial M4 are both great choices.

AX850 is a great power supply. However, I would consider these as well and simply get whatever is cheapest:

For gpu, at about the same price point ($300), you can now get the much better 7950.


For ssd, as mobo said above me, a 256gb crucial m4 or samsung 830 are going to be better options and can be had for cheaper than $200.

Currently about the fastest you can get and is going for $160 which is the lowest price it has ever been. I just snagged one of these myself.


I would recommend a different heatsink. That one is a flashy looking, but you can get better performance for price:

these are 2 good options.

And lastly, the sound card is overkill unless you truly need it. One of the lower end xonar cards might be fine depending on your needs. I have the dx myself.
 
I don't have really a budget but I do plan on pretty much future proofing it for most games that will be coming out and I'm not gonna get the sound card I put that on accident. I heard that the new nvidia series cards are REALLY great any feedback on those?

Figure out a budget. It'll at least give us realistic advice and suggestions on parts. Otherwise, we could give you a $5,000 PC suggestion that you would ignore, wasting everyone's time. $2000 budget? 1500?

The builds Huck and Mobo started detailing sound really sexy already, so I'm glad you gave us a more specific budget; I'd say your price range is the sweet spot for a brand new build because it's a range where you can -- without any semblance of a doubt -- get the best of the best of every component and some extra goodies to make up a god-tier build, IMHO.

I don't think you'll need to go more than $1600ish (probably far less if you've got the motherboard and case already!) at the most, but there are some additions like sound cards and whatnot that'll really sweeten the deal.

Did you say you had a copy of Windows 7 for a fresh OS install? Also, do you have all the peripherals you'll need or want such as a monitor and sound system?

And for reference, what's your exact motherboard and case so we know what we're working with?

I would say if he hasn't bought a chip he could get an Ivy Bridge chip but the problem is alot of those motherboards won't boot with an Ivy Bridge chip until after the BIOS is upgraded...which you can't do because it won't boot without a Sandy Bridge chip first.

I agree though we need more details. All I see is that the OP has the mobo and case but no idea if he needs OS, mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc.
 
I have windows 7 already the premium edition and all the peripherals case is the huge cooler master HAF X so space is absolutely not an issue i already bought an ivy bridge chip but have yet to put it in as like you said it wont boot with that chip until i boot it up with the sandy bridge chip first.

I believe some people have had luck with the motherboard manufacture sending them a new BIOS chip. The other option (which should work) is buy a 30 dollar Celeron chip so you can boot, flash the BIOS, and then install the Ivy Bridge chip. The last option would be to ditch your current board (return if possible or resell) and buy a mobo that supports Ivy Bridge out of the box.
 
The manufacture said they might be able to send me one but they said they would have to check and get back to me on it

Even if they do send you one don't plan on getting it for at the very least a few weeks. Again there's always the option of grabbing a cheap Celeron processor and upgrading the BIOS while booting off that.
 
asuryan, quick ? which socket is your motherboard? the reason I ask is cause i have an intel c2d cpu that isnt serving me any purpose. let me know if you can possibly use it in your mobo. this way you wont have to wait weeks for the mobo to return (just a suggestion).

He's got a socket 1155 motherboard. Your chip is socket 775 :(.
 
Ya mobo, your right, he will have to spend $50 on a celeron cpu (well thats unless hes willing to wait weeks for that mobo to come back). Now if you're an impatient son of a gun, then ya get the celeron cpu & then you wont have to wait weeks for that stupid bios issue.

Your choice of course.

Wow I thought you used to be able to get a Celeron for 20 bucks that fit but it doesn't look like it anymore. I'd suggest either waiting for a BIOS chip or considering a new motherboard that supports Ivy Bridge out of the box. It's not worth blowing 50 bucks on a chip that will go to waste.
 
Any advice on changing anything else on my build list besides the mobo stuff?
 
Go for a samsung 830. You'll save more money than going intel. Also I'd suggest just going for a 7970 rather than a 6970, your future proofing wont really be future proofed with a 6970.
