Hello I am making this thread for those who like me have a competitive nature. Over the last couple of weeks I have made a grave mistake. I had let my competitiveness conflict with the nobility of the tag in front of my name.

it came as revelation to me in the last few days that eGO is not a gaming community with a set of rules there for an arbitrary purpose. It is that way because it has to be, our very success relies on our virtue. That is to say that it is imperative that we continue to uphold the highest standards we possibly can for our community to grow and sustain itself. The eGO tag becomes a representation of a noble cause, while we become players who are supposed to uphold that. While I had thought I had understood this before. There was something there that impeded my ability to act in a way that was ideal, and it was competition.

As we are playing on the servers we have a constant reminder of where we stand as in comparison with other players in the form of the point system. For some of us, especially myself it is very difficult to ignore. The competition starts to take precedence over having fun, trying to complete the games objective, and furthermore in extreme cases the nobility of the tag. What I mean by that is that it becomes difficult to not get angry at someone who kills you in a "cheap" way. That cheap player more often than not is just inexperienced and trying their best to kill you. In some cases people have limited mobility, but all that can be understood at the time is "THAT JERK KILLIN ME FOR SO MANY POINTS".

So why am I writing this? What is the solution? In actuality I don't know, maybe i'll turn the points off and just play in a way that I have fun. All I know is the quality of my conduct in game has suffered due to the way I feel about the competition and from this point on i'm going to try my best to IGNORE that and focus on what I am supposed to be doing, filling the servers, balancing the teams, keeping the server respectful, recruiting and having fun.

I go back and forth about this in my own head. I know the points don't mean anything. But why do we have them? We have them as a means to be competitive- to keep score in the long run. Why would you not want to get as many as you can and keep them? That's the tricky part anyways. If we didn't have points, would we still have the same amount of players? Probably.

One thing that always keeps me sane, is thinking that when people are robbing me of 25 pts each time on Anzio, and 15 each time on the other servers, WE ARE GETTING NEW PLAYERS!

I repeat that to myself- my points will come back later, I try not to let it bother me so much because WE ARE GETTING NEW PLAYERS! I add to their rep, I type stuff to them constantly- "Nice shot!" or "I was lucky on that one"

It's all about keeping the servers filled, and gaining new players. I still cringe when I lose 100 points in 4 minutes, but I remind myself that it's for the greater good, and if I can wear a target on my back for some of the newer players to go for some points, then so be it.

That is exactly what I think too. Lol.

Well said!
I've never thought of it that way, really.

I always try to avenge my lost points by trying other routes and what not. Even when it gets frustrating when I lost a 100 hard earned points to a few new players.

Turn of gameme... that is what I did.
Still can't stop typing rank after I die do... that is a reflex ---> that annoys meg because she can see me typing it. XD
But that is slowey stoping for me to.

I feel this: Our main objective is to have fun and foster an environment conducive towards others having the same. Part of that fun is competitive, kind've inherent to the game. The point system merely ices the cake, fleshing out the competitive nature of the game. I have two keys bound for the gameme system, one to turn off the messages and one by which to turn them on to suit my mood.

interesting

The point system is a lure for new server players and potential new members to acheive some sort of ranking and status. At least thats how I felt. Once you get introduced into this great community we have it turns into much more than the points. It's about making friends and building bonds around something we all have in common, the love of this game.

Besides I gave up on points and just started tracking how many times Annihilator and Chuck kill me with a pen and paper. I can through that away every night and start fresh!!

I only use my points to judge how I'm improving in DoDs over time, using when people pick me in realism became unreliable.

I have to look at my points everytime I die (which is most of the time) or I kill someone. It has become a reflex for me.

I turned visual on the points recently off. I was not enjoying my playing time on DOD and was actually getting a headache i would look at it so much lol.

I have done the same. I spent more time looking at how many point I just gained or lost & not concentrating on the core game play. !gameme_vanish 1 for me.
