Another Attempt at Anzio Addition

I have asked this question before but I do not think I was persuasive enough which is why I am giving it another attempt. I also was told that such questions should go to the dropbox, my intention is for everyone to see and get their suggestions, which is why I do not put it into the dropbox.

Anyway, I have noticed from playing on 24/7 servers the following outcome. You have a full server. It stays full for a long time. Suddenly one team wins the rounds after one or two hours. What happens next is that a lot of players leave immediately. I seen it happen on donner a lot. Donner is known for long rounds. There is a 32 full server when I am playing, round it over, and the server is down to 20 players. I also seen this happen on 24/7 colmar servers. Colmar is probably the longest lasting map, games can go for several hours, when they are over people start leaving.

Anzio is notorious for being too quick. Rounds can be over in less than one minute, the quickest I ever seen in all the time playing DOD is 28 seconds. Sometimes this win streak happens over and over again, with rounds being over within a minute or two. This is the single biggest reason why players start leaving anzio servers. They do not like to lose. Especially not this quickly. On Donner one team can win ten times in a row, but over a course of hours and retain its population of players.

My suggestion is to improve anzio in such a way that it lasts for much longer. It will also require a lot more teamwork to win. I strongly believe this will attract and maintain players that are in the server.

What I was thinking is to replace the two main flags, church and bridge, by triple caps, meaning it will take three people to cap a flag as opposed to two. Replace mid-flag with a double-cap. Replace the spawn flags with plant charges.

Let me counter the immediate criticism that I anticipate from giving the above proposal. A lot of people would tell me that "this map will never be over, it will simply go on forever, or for way too long". This is not true.

First of all. I noticed that in many instances double caps use three people anyway. Especially at the initial start of the round when allies rush church and axis rush bridge. When allies cap it often has three or four players on it, and when axis cap it often has three or four players on it. So capping with three people is a restriction on the cap but the way anzio plays out, it is not unreal to make such a cap. It is more than doable. Just a restriction to extend map time.

Second of all. The spawn flags can be destroyed at any time with a plant charge. If axis happens to destroy allies spawn flag near the start of the round it means they do not have to worry about it. For illustrative purposes, say that axis capped everything now they have to destroy the spawn flag. If as they are destroying the spawn flag allies cap mid it does not mean axis have to re-destroy the spawn flag, it is already destroyed. So now axis only have to focus on mid-flag. The entire point of the planted-spawn flag is to prevent quick rounds from one guy rushing into it and quickly ending the round, but at the same time it is not unreal to do that.

Therefore the triple caps are not big additions to anzio. The spawn-flag is not a big restriction. The only big change is the mid-flag cap. I do not know how the mid-flag having two people will play out but I do not see it being some stalemate flaw design in the map from how the map plays out.

Anzio is a fantastic map because it is very complex. Most maps are very linear, like donner, or kalt, or avalanche. Anzio is very complex with many different passages and different battles one can engage in, with both sides of the map sometimes being completely different from each other. Its only drawback for most players in DOD has always been that it is way too fast compared to other maps. These simple changes can resolve this problem easily.

These changes all introduce a lot more teamwork. Now you need to rely on your team for any flag capture or any charge planted. So it becomes more enjoyable to rely on that much teamwork.

I am sure eGO wants to have an anzio server that is close to popularity at least like its Strand server. Why not try some map changes? It will not hurt the server. It is always possible to go back to the original settings. Try it out and see if these suggestions, or other similar suggestions, improve server traffic. You can even call it "Anzio 2.0" as a marketing device.

Leadership would have the final say in a decision like this, which is the primary reason for posting in the drop box. It's their call, not ours and honestly it's a little unfair to request our feedback on it if they (leadership) haven't given you permission to explore it a bit and do so. Maybe you have, I don't know. Anyhow I digress, and here is my two cents since you asked for feedback.

Me personally, I enjoy Anzio just the way it is and personally don't believe these changes are necessary. When one team starts to win repeatedly I see the challenge being to rally your own team, use communication and improve the teamwork on the server.

You are right in that Anzio is a complex server, and I think more teamwork and communication is required on this map then perhaps any other one. When one team gets clicking if the other doesn't get it together just as quick we see the coherent team winning fast and frequently.

Those are my thoughts. I know we are in disagreement, but don't take it personal, on the flip side I appreciate seeing people excited and determined to see our servers remain successful.

Thanks for posting this as an idea.... New ideas are what helps any community, such as eGO, grow and expand.

I agree that something like this would aid in the extension of time per round, but I don't know if the specifics listed are the best course of action.

I urge you to put this in the drop-box also if you have not already done so, and maybe ask leadership for some sort of DoD:S division wide poll on the situation. We have leadership to make certain decisions, but alas this should be more of a democracy than not.

1) This will need a custom Anzio map, that somebody has to make.#1
2) Sounds like this would go faster to me, then slower.#2
3) This should be drop boxed.#3
4) I do not see the point of making the changes.#4

#1 Not hard to do.
#2 People would just be sneaky and blow up the first flag, making it easy for the there team to win.
#3 As the people have stated above.
#4 I think Anzio works like it is.

What makes Anzio great, different, better, more fun, or use your own adjective is that it is a fast map. Why do we want all the maps to be the same slow or medium progression? The point of fast vs. slow just to keep more people playing is subjective anyway. What would keep more people on Anzio is a 50-50 win loss split. People leave Anzio more often because of stacked teams. eGO is not going to enforce team movement just for parity, so if you want more people to stay in Anzio, switch to the losing side and help them out. Anzio is one of the best team effort maps in DODS and that is another reason why people leave. They do not communicate and lose too much.

I have to agree with boyle. The fast-paced aspect of anzio is what I love about the map. It is what keeps me coming back.

I agree with Chili and Boyle. What makes Anzio a great map is because you are rewarded for playing the game right by capturing flags and winning. It is a fast map unlike Donner which takes hours to win. I also like it because it doesn't reward people who like to camp and never have the courage to go and cap a flag. It forces them to cap or loose.

Their is no need to change our Anzio server, it's fine. In my mind, it's our best server.

I love Anzio like it is right now, fast & chaotic even sometimes. Although i like your change-ideas aswell. Would like to try that setup if it's possible at some point. But like it's said before me, our 24/7-servers are mostly slowpaced, so Anzio like it is now, brings something to counter that.

just my 2 cents.

It's a fascinating idea... I'll give you that Cube.
I didn't know though (and I'll probably be corrected or be informed) that the caps and such could be changed...
The idea of a triple cap being introduced would be interesting to me... the spawn caps being turned into demo caps/charges, etc. hmmm, not so much.

INHO what made anzio unique for me was that there were not as many campers in that map every time I played it. But I guess it is because I played on it when it wasn't 15 vs 15.

Love anzio, but I love the maps with lots more players like donner and avalanche the most.
Nevertheless, great maps, and in my opinion a change will come from those most experienced (leadership) if something doesn't run well. From what I've seen anzio seems to be doing okay. Also I love the choice of having faster rounds, I can get tired out from the long lasting rounds at kalt, donner, and avalanche.

I agree with these points straight down the line, but thanks to Cubey for taking the time to both think and post about this idea.

I don't think this would do any better to be honest. Good thought behind it, you might get a few extra players. But I doubt they would stay.

Also once you change a servers map you take a huge risk in loosing regular pubs, especially if they don't like the new changes. And Anzio is growing a player base of pubs.. I feel this would be the worst time to "test" this idea.

If the server was hurting I'd say maybe try it.
