Luke, just a forewarning. You are aware that the rig we may come up will be actually below average in our eyes. Average PC's would cost around $800-1200. You're going with a budget build, so we'll need to cut a lot of corners for cost-savings.

Snipeye, if you look out for sales, it can save him money!! That's how I got MY bada$$ gaming setup for 700 dollars!!

Fetter, thanks for pointing out the obvious.
5star gave a good baseline build to work off of, Luke. With the sales Fetter pointed out, not to mention the plain daily/weekly deals that are available on Newegg/TigerDirect, you can pick and choose what part to upgrade. The biggest pain in the butt issue is buying the OS. Depending on the situation, you can get it for free to spending (usually) around $100 USD. All college students will know what I mean by that last sentence.

It is possible to build a gaming desktop for $600-700 bucks. Heres my question tho. Do you have any preferences for cpu or gpu? Id say if anything an AMD build will be your best bet. Give me about 2 hours & ill update my post with a decent build in that price range. Mind you that this build will be based on the fact that you're not looking to overclock (I hope I am correct with this understanding).

This will save you more money then possibly the sales will. OF course there will be more of a risk of stuff not working properly. A sale on a refurbished part actually saves you some very nice cash.
The video 5tar posted is good as snipeye said. If you look around, you can spend an extra 1-200$ on a CPU/GPU and get a great deal for graphics cards and CPU's.

I get that on two levels. Not only am I in college but my brother also works for Microsoft. Yay cheap software! I'm also about to use my brother because I'm looking into building my own rig soon.
Ok we may have a bit of an issue. Hey Luke, according to your Steam profile, it says you live in Russia. Is this correct? If so, then getting parts may not be that easy online. I did some research & found not many sites to be reliable when it comes to pc components.

Actually I hope your joking.
There's another thread in this section about certified refurbished parts. I've done "alot" of builds in my time & more then a few with 1 or more certified refurbished parts & the longevity of those build has been just as successful & builds with only new parts.
A closed mind is a good thing to lose.

I'd rather not buy refurbished parts... I'd just spend a couple extra dollars to get something that's guaranteed to work. If your spending a ton of money on a good build, why cheap out.

I buy refurbished parts. A lot cheaper, guaranteed to work, and has same warranty most the time as if buying brand new. Never had ANY issues with ONE refurbished part I've bought. I bought a refurbished Corsair 650 watt PSU, hasn't failed me yet after about 6 months of usage, and came with the same warranty as if bought brand new. Motherboard was refurbished for 60 bucks, MSI Z77 MPower, which the motherboard is a 240 dollar motherboard originally, graphics card was refurbished, MSI GTX 660 TI power edition, for 175 dollars vs 300 dollars. The PSU was 40 bucks vs 80 dollars. No issues yet, and saved a lot of money. Refurbished is the way to go. :thumbup1:

True & no where have I ever suggested putting "refurbished parts" in a mid - high end rig.
We are talking about this persons request for a low end $600- 700 gaming rig, & "certified refurbished parts" are just one way for such a person to stretch their $$ and maybe make a low endrig closer to mid on that budget he gave.
If it's not you style it's not your style, doesn't mean it's not an option for others out there.
FYI, sorry my font & coloring style bothers 'ya. But it works for me so ....
1) Stop arguing over refurbs. Either make a suggestion about the parts or I'm going to tell leadership you guys can't play nicely. You guys can argue about it in that refurb thread.
