Updating my Galaxy S2 phone to newer version of android

So with the Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100), it has begun to receive the android 4.1.2 update, but only in some countries. I'm a bit tired of waiting and want to get it now. Is there any safe way to do this?

That's a completely different firmware from the stock Samsung.

Besides when I get either a Samsung Epic or HTC Evo Shift from Ebay, im gonna upgrade either to 4.1.2. I havent heard that that many issues with them. Besides, Jellybean looks so much sleaker & from what I hear, faster than previous versions.

With both phones having 512 MB of RAM and Cyanogenmod (If that's what you're planning to do) not being a very lightweight ROM, I think your performance might leave some to be desired.
