Still hope for the FPS shooters

Article itself does prove a good point saying that the "simplicity" of COD has ruined possibly other great FPS titles out there dramatically, all because the game feels different.

But I agree more with some of the comments below it. The one about 12 year olds wanting to play DayZ because it's easy to pick up (Yeah, right xD) has ruined ArmA 2 is true. Now days I can't hop onto a Domination server without finding some annoying ass script kiddie, killing/steamrolling everyone with their "ultra l33t hax", just because they can't play them game the way it's mean't too!!!

Gahhh, I need a drink.

TL;DR

now for a rant

FPS games quality have completely went down a long time ago. I am not saying that ALL games have went down, just the major franchised ones. Call of duty, battlefield, etc. are now made to meet deadlines instead of player satisfaction. ea and activision tend to do this if you haven't already noticed. Now what i like about free to play games Ex. planet side 2 is that they update it constantly with better updates. Will i say its a perfect game? no, but i can say that its better then games that are 60-80 bucks now.

Another thing is that activision is charging $60-80 JUST FOR AN ADD ON CONTENT. This content should be free and not have to pay the extra 15-30 bucks just for dlc that is just a couple maps. and now black ops 2 has an extension addition that is $70 NOT INCLUDING DLC, and the dlc season pass is $50.

FOR THOSE WHO ARE TL;DR like me
In conclusion major game companies only care about money while the lower free to play or small game companies tend to care more about the player. Also fps games suck unless made to fit balance and customer satisfaction + pricing

I agree that most Free to play games are way better then the major players. They also had to dumb down the skill level to get more people to play.

I agree, FPS games these days take far less skill than they used to. Just look at CoD. It is just getting easier and easier to get random kills but just shooting your gun randomly. I know the article talks about CoD, but it's one of the largest FPS games that is running and it can almost be applied to any game. Let's look at Half-Life and Half-Life 2. I personally had to give up on the alien planet on Half-Life, but I felt that I could simply fly through Half-Life 2 because it was easier to learn and pick up.

About F2P games, they can turn into pay to play games fast and it's unfortunate because some games originally had great potential. I don't mind there being an option for extra gold, faster experience gain, or special costumes (that don't impact stats!!!) in games because it's simply about appearance at that point. But when games start to release new mounts and gear weekly or monthly that just keep getting better and better, it slowly comes down to who pays the most.

I know in black ops 2, you never have to ads because all guns are able to get kills better then ads. Laser sight just adds this to be even more OP which is why cod is a dieing series that should just STAHP. I also think that more games should fallow some examples valve has. tf2 (though hated by many) shows a ftp game can actually be amazingly balanced. All guns are able to be received without buying them or actually trying to get them. If more games fallowed the NMsniper rule of "Make the game fair to all players without giving an advantage to play to win gamers"in other words, GET RID OF PAY TO WIN AND DLC THAT COSTS $100+

well at least make DLC free just like the older days. I too though do not like the pay to win, this is why i stop playing some of them.

Yeah I suppose I have to agree. I like being able to pick up a game quickly, but I guess it's more fun to learn and get good at one instead. I seriously loved boarderlands, do you guys think that's an easy one to pick up?

Tbh: Any fps video game is fun. The only reason I hate games like cod is because everyone is a gun expert when they play that game -.- and then I have to hear how much better the ump is than the SAW.

Boarderlands was one of those games i picked up and i couldn't just Simply play through it. I had to Strategize and couldn't run and gun. I like these types of games. I also agree with you about having more fun to learn and get good at it.

also i hate dlc that cost money if you guys haven't realized this yet -_-

To be quite honest its not just FPS the gaming industry in general has gone down.
Story, Depth, Skill they have all gone down.
One thing i can blame is making this easier for a generation of people who are used to getting all the information force fed to them there is no natural development when everything is googled.
If that is the target audience for these types of games why make them difficult or have depth when that is not what the target audience wants. they want banners and easy unrealistic kills so they can 360 no scope people and post how awesome they are.

In my opinion its not just games that are going down the shitter look at music and movies to name a few but thats a different rant for another time haha

yeah movies have become mostly remakes and the music is stuck in this "Rap crap" era.

I dont hate development companies for making cookie cutter games that people pay money for (I loved all 3 Modern Warfare games, and I played both Black Ops.)
I hate people who cant go from Call of Duty to RO2 or ArmA and get it through their heads that they shouldnt be expecting the same thing, and then the community dies after I put all of my heart into the Beta with DJYetiStorm and when the final version comes out no one is there to support it.

Its like watching Alien and Aliens, yeah they both have Xenomorphs in them, but they're different movies that are both great in their own ways. Or when someone watches a movie like the new "Red Dawn" and say, "Well that movie was nothing but shooting, it wasnt very good." No, it was fantastic because all I wanted to see when I paid money to watch that movie a giant screen was to watch Communists get blown up. Thats it.

I, for one, will be looking forward to he next Call of Duty that comes out in November. Am I expecting a well thought out story line with multiple endings? No. Im expecting to aim in the general direction of some bad guys who are probably European and having a bunch of random stuff explode.
When I want a story line I'll play Mass Effect, or Bioshock. When I want to be tactical I'll come find Reaper Company in Takistan so I can be a Medic or a Machine Gunner and run behind Yeti so I can stare at that perfect buttocks of his.

Gaming in general has changed over the years; in recent years, the proliferation of high-action low-thought games has lead to a generation of young players who are all about the pew pew and who cares about strategy?

In the early 3D gaming days, it was easy to pop onto a game server and find people that would work as a team. As gaming reached a wider audience, it meant letting in people that play for many different reasons. As games started to cost more and more to make, it meant pulling in more and more of those players to fill the budget.

It's the same in MMOs. The concept of community or making friends is gone. It's just a public chat room while you solo your way through 90% of the game's content. In the same respect; to a lot of people, teammates in shooters are just targets that can't be killed for points, and people to troll in voice chat.
