Repairing old pc

Gunblack, I'm gonna have to keep beating you with the chair.

You're mobo pick is a LGA 1155 socket. If he's going to reuse his CPU from the old mobo, that's an LGA775 socket. So you got an incompatibility there. You'll need to recommend a CPU to go with the mobo.

The comment about the graphics card compatible with the mobo; good thing is that most, if not ALL, motherboards come with PCI-E. The last mobo I used that didn't goes back to Athlon64 with an AGP connection (6600GT).

Smith, there's nothing wrong with replacing the motherboard, especially if you want it to last you for a few years or so (say 3-5 years). It's just a bit overwhelming for first time builders because the motherboard is like the skeletal system; it provides the frame for everything else you need to put in the PC.

1) CPU
2) Motherbroard
3) Memory
4) Power Supply
5) Video Card
6) Hard DRives
7) DVD/CD Drives
8) CPU Heatsink
9) Fans
10) Case

That's what you will be interacting with (or their attached cables) when you replace the motherboard.

ugh.. well I never went too newegg.. I barebones mine.. but not from newegg from pricewatch alot easier

You can easily get a better power supply for that kind of money. Mobo is far over kill on a rig like his. He will have to buy more RAM. And if all he will be playing is source based games or steam based he doesnt need anything more then a 560Ti. Its way overkill.

huehuehuehue

Anyways. Listen to snipeye if your going to make a new build. No offense Gunblack, but snipeye definatly knows his stuff. He has been here longer then me. Snipeye and a person I never see anymore named Reflex99 in eGO are both AMAZING with computers. Im not as sophisticated with the sockets and other things like snipeeyeyeyeyeyeyyyyyeyeyeyyeyyeeeeeyyyeyeee

Should I go with and MSI GPU, or a Galaxy, Price difference is not that much more for the msi?
One other thing I need a new CPU because mine is 2 core intel and does not support 64 bit.

On price watch some of these sellers i have never seen before, are they safe, and are they going to charge me crazy amounts of money for shipping handling and tax?

I know that I am posting alot and sorry. What i5 CPU should i get. I was looking at the CPU+MB combos in pricewatch.

Holy sweet bejeezus I have to know so much!!!!! I want new tower because mine sucks. So basically I building whole new pc... lol. I'm using the same 1tb HDD. Any suggestions on the tower?

Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte are all good brands. It comes down to features, prices, and personal opinions. I personally favor Gigabyte, but other people have positive preferences towards others, including EVGA.

I'm going to base this as a moderate-budget build. There will always be alternate models and parts you can choose from, but hopefully you'll see this as more of a baseline build, and not a final decision:

Assuming you're working on a budget of under $800, and you'll need 4 new parts (CPU, Mobo, RAM, and GPU), here's my list for ya:

Motherboard: MSI Z77A-G45 Thunderbolt LGA 1155 Mobo $154.99
Extra: Comes with G.Skill 8GB DDR3 1600 RAM for free ($55 listed)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130665
Memory: G.Skill 8GB DDR3 1600 RAM $55 (Now you got 16GB of DDR3 RAM!)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231488
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge $220
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504
GPU: (Wide variety here so feel free to play with this. You can get anything between a 560TI to a 650Ti (or AMD equivalent) based on the budget so far)
EVGA GeForce GTX 650Ti $180
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130841
PSU: Going to suggest two brands;
OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular PSU $80 (-$10 MIR for total of $70)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341017
or Corsair TX650 650W PSU $80 (-$10 MIR as well totaling $70)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139020

Summary:
Motherboard: MSI $155
Memory: G.Skill $55 (or $0 if going with just 1 stick)
CPU: Intel i5-3570K $220
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 650Ti $180
PSU: OCZ or Corsair $80 (-$10 MIR)
Total: $690 (-$10 MIR).

Alternate Mobo Suggestions:
Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 $150 (-$20 MIR)

I'm throwing this one in because the MSI motherboard ONLY has an HDMI connection, which your monitor may not be compatible with. If that's the case, then I suggest the Gigabyte board above as it has both DVI-D-Sub and HDMI connections, covering both sides of your needs. Of course, that may not even be an issue, since the GPU would provide the monitor connection for ya, which the EVGA has 1 mini HDMI and 2 DVI ports. But the Gigabyte will save you $25 in the end (including MIR). However, doing so will mean a change in the memory bought. If you decide to get the 16GB equivalent, you'll end up spending around $120, negating the savings in the motherboard, and ending up costing you $30 more overall. However, if 8GB suffices, you can easily pick up 2x4GB DDR3 from G.Skill or Corsair for about $60-65, still saving you about $15 overall on the purchase price.

Oi Vay! Alright, cases becomes the one pick that's very much a personal choice. HOWEVER, things to remember here:

1) Two types you are only concerned with. Mid-tower or Full tower. Difference; between 15-30 pounds, more room to expand, more cooling, possible additional water cooling, and increased chances of getting a hernia if you carry it around for LAN parties. (I know this from experience, fortunately, I lived on the 2nd floor of my dorm back in college)

2) Plastic, Steel, Aluminum. Those are what the cases are made out of. Depending on the material used defines how heavy the case can be. Personally, I like my cases to have steel in them. Of course, I prefer full towers too which may not be the best pick for some.

3) Windows or no windows. Windows look cool, especially with LED-fans inside. However, you will have increase noise from the case versus a no-window case. But that can be offset with larger, lower RPM fans (instead of 80mm fans, use 120mm or 180mm)

4) Drive bays. If you end up using a lot of hard drives, this becomes important as there's only so many 5.25" drive bays allowed in a case. That's why I like full towers; more of these for me! (I'm running +3.5TB of HDD)

5) Personal choice! The case in a LAN party shows off what you can bring. If you have great parts, but a crappy case, well, you will be mocked at at first. But a nice looking case, fan boys will drool.

Suggestions: As much as others may not like it, I'm going to have my personal preference override my recommendations because dammit, I like towers!

Cooler Master HAF X $200 + 20% off promo code (EMCXTWR26). Price: $160
Cooler Master HAF 932 $160 + 20% off promo code (EMCXTWR26) Price: $128
NZXT Phantom White: $120 + $9 S&H
Rosewill Thor $130 + $6 S&H

How does this compare to your budget? A lil over the top, but still close!

Previous summary total: $690 (-$10 MIR)
New Total with...
Case 1: $850 + S&H
Case 2: $818 + S&H
Case 3: $810 + S&H + $9 S&H
Case 4: $820 + S&H + $6 S&H

FYI: When you do build all of this, be sure to reformat the hard drive and then reinstall Windows. It's best to start off a new PC with a clean slate (not to mention you will create system issues by having a prior OS installed based on a different motherboard and plugged into a new one...)

Hopefully one last thing, I cannot find that motherboard you mentioned with the free ram anywere?
