Brime, the best way to get good at this game, is to just play. The only reason I play Support and MG as my two main classes is because when I first started playing DoDS I was following Capt. Goomba around and he was trying to get the achievements. Just get use to the way the guns work, and find which class works for you.
I tend to agree with this idea. I use the rifleman class well due to the fact that when I first started playing I joined a clan that restricted all new members to only that class. You can branch out from there, but often for the most part its getting a feel for the weapon.
Now granted, there are some tips and tricks that can be shown to you; these can improve your gameplay slightly with some practice. For one, crosshair choice is critical, I myself prefer either dot as small as it goes or the plus sign as small as it goes; color is also important here, you'd want to pick a color that you can track and doesn't get lost in the background colors of the map or character skins. I often use red, white or yellow depending. How to strafe and be unpredictable in your strafe (patterns can be recognized and next thing you know players start aiming right everytime they see you

). How to vary and time your bursts on the MG if you are spamming a choke point as not to make a pattern (fairly simple with a little practice). How to quick scope/weapon swap/weapon drop/grab, these are a bit more advanced and not really needed.
Key binds and a 5 button mouse can help. I have a 5 button mouse with my two extra buttons bound to say !medic and to key my mic. This keeps my left hand free for pure navigation and reload, ect.
Leaning the play style for the class also helps. Support generally tend to crouch while firing, rifleman tend to strafe left and right between shots and just like a sniper will often peek. Assult tend to charge and fair extremely well in close quarters. Snipers and MG's work best in choke points or can move on the tails of a rush to add suppression(though don't expect to last long in these situations, at least if the other team is worth their salt

. Rocket is somewhat multi-class. I've seen people run and gun with rocket, though generally they are in my opinion more for opening up choke points, or getting that pesky camper out of a window. Sniper is suppression and can run and gun as well. Often they hold down wider areas so that team members can push forward, and offer suppression when attempting to take objectives. Granted these are just my views and uses for these classes, I've seen support be snipers and snipers be better then riflemen. I've seen MG rushers and rocket campers, it's all how the class fits your play style.
Play the game with a goal in mind can help as well. Want to work on accuracy? Grab a rifleman class for a few rounds. Often you'll find you need to hit with that first shot or be blasted in automatic spray. Know a map well enough to know the close quarters bits that are critical to objectives? Grab support or assault and hold em down so your team can advance. Wanna hold down open or choke points that are critical to winning the round? Pick up a sniper or MG and start a fire. Know where snipers tend to hide and notice their picking off your team? Got a pesky MG sitting around a corner? Grab the rocket and send some bodies flying. Granted there is much more to these, though often I don't see much of that use in a pub.
Getting used the class is most of what I could teach you in an event like that, I had to when I was a DS for a realism school. Though its just drills that force you to practice what you could be doing in any pub. Pick a goal, grab that class, and just keep chipping away at it.
I support the idea, though I think something like this would be of more use to realism players. Learning the map, strategy, and class setup for a team, ect.
Though if we are planning such a thing, I'm more than willing to pass on any information I can that may help.
As for config tweaks, those you might want to do a little more research on as there is no "one size fits all" on that end. If you have questions, PM me either here or steam and I'll help ya tweak what I can. Also I'll post a couple links that might point you in the right direction.

FPS/LAG:
http://halflife2.filefront.com/info/dodsfpsguide Note though, be careful with this one. If you don't need the FPS boost, don't toy with anything beyond cosmetic to the game. Also keep in mind some things you may think are cosmetic can help you, IE muzzle flash, I often use this to help spot snipers, turn it off and you'll lose that advantage.
