That happens and I have to a hard shutdown because it looks like when a driver crashes during a game and the only option is to shut down.

There are many reasons why your computer would lock up or seem to "hang" when attempting to run any software. First and foremost I think of malware as it is always a safe bet to make sure your system is clean of infection. Let me know if you need assistance in this procedure. Next I would make sure you are not overloading your computer with software running in the background. You can limit the software running by using the built in feature within Windows called "msconfig" (without quotes). The startup tab is where you want to review and uncheck unnecessary software. Run the bare minimum such as your live antivirus protection for example. Next, if you recently installed a driver update to any hardware in your computer you might want to uninstall it and go with the previous stable version that was not affecting your computer in such a negative manner. This should give you plenty of homework for now. Let me know how things go.

I only have the essentials running in the background and as far as Malware goes AVG, Webroot, and Windows Defender all seem to say I'm protected and every time i scan there is absolutely nothing.

Get rid of Webroot and let AVG (if that is the AV you choose to use) be the only one running. If both Webroot and AVG are actively protecting your computer they can conflict with each other. I personally don't recommend Webroot as it has been less than excellent. Once you've uninstalled Webroot restart your machine. See if there is any change in the computer's behavior when opening other software.

"I only have the essentials running"

"AVG, Webroot, and Windows Defender"

That could be one of your issues. You should only be running one antivirus system.

Also, 3 antiviruses aren't "the essentials".
